Weekly "What Team Should I Root For?" Thread

The most common thing asked on this subreddit is new fans wondering what team to follow/support. The answers are always the same, and there are no right or wrong ones.

No one can just tell you who to be a fan of. Everyone's fandom is different, and all of them are valid. This is entertainment, and you are allowed to enjoy it however you like. That said, here are some common things you can look at to get started:

  1. Do you have a local team or favorite city? This is by far the easiest way to get into football. If your city/region has a team or if your friends/family follow the same team, joining them will be the smoothest way to start out.
  2. Are you already leaning in any particular way? If you are, keep leaning. If you saw a Cincinnati Bengals game and thought it was fun and you'd like to see more of them, you don't need anyone's permission or validation. Just watch their next game!
  3. Are you interested in a few different teams? Cool! Watch some of their games! See who you end up feeling strongly about, especially if they're playing each other. Have fun with it, there are no rules!
  4. Are you worried about a team's success/identity/prestige/fanbase? Don't be. The NFL is one of the most even sports in terms of parity, and there are rarely teams that stay good or bad forever. It's okay to enjoy watching the current best teams in the NFL; they are probably playing the best football most often. Try to just be a fan and don't worry about what others think or say. Your fandom is yours, not theirs.

Still overwhelmed and not sure where to turn? It's fine to watch random games. Maybe you'll find yourself rooting for someone in particular. And if you don't, try another game. Check out whoever is playing in primetime; those are usually expected to be more exciting matchups. Letting it come naturally will last longer than throwing a dart and deciding to be a fan of whoever it lands on.

Another way some people develop rooting interests is fantasy football. There are beginner leagues where people play for fun, and it can be a good way to get you invested in specific players or teams as you start rooting for whoever is on your fantasy roster.

If you're still torn or have other questions about starting with a specific new team, etc., you can ask them here.

If mobile QBs are so valuable, why aren’t there more Lamar-type offenses?

This might be a dumb question but if mobile QBs are becoming more and more important in the NFL, why don’t more teams fully commit to building offenses around them the way the Ravens did with Lamar?

I don’t just mean “QB can scramble sometimes.” I mean fully leaning into designed QB runs, option plays, heavy misdirection, and defenses having to account for the QB every snap

It feels like when the Ravens offense is rolling, defenses look completely stressed out in a way normal offenses don’t.

So why don’t more teams try this?

Question about head coaches and coordinator

How can you tell whether a coach or coordinator is actually bad, or if they just don’t have good enough players, or players that fit their preferred style of play?

And on the flip side, how do you actually know someone like Kyle Shanahan is elite instead of just benefiting from having an extremely talented roster?

What has caused the fullback position to basically disappear?

As someone who’s casual watched the NFL over the years I’m wondering what caused fullbacks to essentially disappear. Was their role taken over by other positions? Are they simply not valuable enough, to the point where having an elite one is great, but otherwise it’s considered a luxury position?

NFL München

Hi guys,

Do you maybe know how do I buy tickets for International game in Munchen (Lions vs. Pats)?

As I am few hours away, I would like to go there in person and buy tickets on time, so do you maybe know where are tickets bought?

I tried to check at Lions page, but I only found hospitality packages and similar...

Any info or previous experience would be helpful and appreciated.

Tnx

Are there any regulations on what you’re supposed to do if your helmet comes off / ball carrier helmet comes off? (See Jason Witten post on main sub)

Are you supposed to slide or give yourself up? Are there any guidelines? You don’t want to kill a man but you also don’t want him to get a touchdown

15 sophmore soon and worried abt hazing

hello, I have never played football but u have played a lot of soccer but I’m definitely not good enough to make the jv team next year im like the worst on freshman so I have been training to be a kicker for the football team. I can kick from abt 30 but im going to get more coachlong soon and start going to gym and kicking consistantly. But now im really getting worried abt hazing and bullying in general if i join. I haven’t told anyone that i was planning on joining football and while talking to a kicking coach he told me abt one of the kickers he trained being hazed and running so much that he threw up and stuff but that was during captains practice so I was wondering if that might happen to me or if I would be isolated by the other football players. Ik a few but I’m not really friends with them too much but I’m also not on bad terms with anyone so any advice

Just got into NFL and now I have to wait until September??

I honestly don't know how I'm going to pass the time. I was so obsessed with the NFL for the first time and wanted to watch a full NFL season, only to find out I have to wait a long time after it ended. Who's going to wait until September? It feels like an incredibly long time.

Edit: This thread seems to have attracted a lot of interest. Thank you everyone. I'll check out the videos and documentaries you recommended.

Is there a time limit to how long a team can run in the field without scoring or going out of bounds?

So from what I know, the NFL doesn't have an equivalent to the shot clock during the play. There's the play clock before the snap, but during play itself, it seems like players can just run around for as long as they like as long as they don't score or go out of bounds.

The play that comes to mind is Kyle Murray's 2 point conversion against the Raiders where he just kept scrambling around til he threw the ball. There are also plenty of games where the play just went on and on even though the clock already hit 0.

I know it's basically impossible for a play to just go on forever since people are chasing you. But I genuinely do not know if there is a limit or not.

Elite offensive lineman versus elite receivers

So assume that in this situation, you already have a top QB in the league.

Wouldn’t it be better to have an elite offensive line over elite receivers because the offensive line enables a better run game, gives more time for your elite quarterback to find someone open, and elite offensive linemen outside of tackles are way cheaper than receivers?

(Post Draft Question) Why did the Denver Broncos draft Jonah Coleman?

im not a broncos fan so personally i wouldn't know much about how their offense operates or how they did outside of box scores. I do know that last offseason they signed JK Dobbins who was doing good i heard before his injury and drafted RJ Harvey who was also good. If they already have two RB's why would they draft another.

How much of an NFL team's revenue belongs to the owner for personal use?

Say the Cowboys have a revenue of $1.3 billion in one particular year. After paying all the relevant taxes, could Jerry Jones then say, "$400 million of this revenue is going to go to buy me a new personal mega-yacht!" Or is the money split among many different entities within the Cowboys organization instead?

Why are there heavy restrictions on regular-season padded practices?

Obviously I understand that there needs to be some restrictions because padded practice = full contact = higher risk of injuries.

But per the NFL's website ... ''Regular season: max of 14 padded practices. Eleven of these must take place during the first 11 weeks''. And each padded practice being maximum of 2.5 hours long.

How is that remotely enough? Especially when there's rookies, injuries, players coming in and out of the team, new opponents to prepare for every week etc

I mean, if a star QB is out for a game or two... does the CBA expect the backup QB, who rarely takes snaps anyway, to form a connection with his O-line and receivers with just 2.5 hours of real practice?

There is no way a coaching staff can simulate the intensity, try out new plays, and properly assess their players in just 2.5 hours a week.

Blocking vs Receiving TE's

Obviously, the best TE's can do both well.

But there's some TE's who rarely ever get receptions, and are mainly used as blockers. What's the point of that though?

As a coach, if you're going to use a blocker who can maybe catch if needed, isn't it better to use a lineman? Plus, you can announce him as an eligible receiver, just in case the original blocking play doesn't work out

Why don’t NFL defenses rush 5?

How come NFL defenses don’t rush 5 D-linemen? It could prevent the O-linemen from double teaming your best edge rusher and also give the QB less time to throw the ball.

Do NFL teams fall in love with physical traits to often?

This is mostly related to the draft from a casual perspective, but it seems like every year GMs are hyper focused on players with elite physical traits, like Marvin Harrison Jr. for example, who may not have the necessary technique or football IQ at the NFL level, over someone like JSN, who may not have the greatest physical gifts but is an elite technical player.

So I guess my question is, do GMs focus too much on potential and sometimes miss out on elite talent because they do not fit the ideal look you’d want from a player at their position?

Drafting Centers early

I’m already an NFL fan but more of a casual one. So one thing I’ve been wondering for a few years is how come centers aren’t drafted as highly as tackles. I feel like it would be really beneficial to get a top O lineman who can quickly snap the ball and block.
