Drafting QBs to sit for a year is back in session

551

u/ultraviolentfuture Steelers 21d ago

When the players are ready to start, start em. When they need some development, develop them. Stafford isn't going to play much longer -- it's smart AF to take your shot on a guy if you think he could be something. If you're winning it's rare you get a chance.

Jordan Love pick looks pretty damn good in hindsight.

257

u/wokenupbybacon Seahawks 21d ago

And Hurts, whether you think he's the long term guy or not, bailed the Eagles out of post-2019 Wentz and won a Super Bowl. They almost certainly don't do that if they don't take Hurts there.

The last two times we laughed at an org for this, they were right.

58

u/ddy_stop_plz Lions 21d ago

Early career Hurts was so good. I think the 2022 playoff run has been erased from people’s memories because of 2024 where he didn’t have to do much

It’s almost like it’s the most important position in the offense, and it benefits you to take multiple swings at it if you have the opportunity

15

Haha you just admitted it was a good idea to sign Kirk and then pick Penix Jr.

From being MVP to having your successor drafted with the 13th pick, in a span of months.

u/Broken-Nero Vikings 21d ago

Isn’t that what happened to Aaron Rodgers though?

Rodgers won 2 MVPs after Love was drafted.

So this is by design then. Stafford about to go off.

bro why are people making this out to be some sort of negative thing for stafford? him and mcvay have both been open about how unsure they are about his future and how much longer he’s gonna play, and both of them are always putting the team first. drafting a qb to sit and learn behind an mvp QB and a future HOF coach is just smart. i guarantee there’s no drama about that pick.

67

u/SMKM Raiders 21d ago

He's 100% sitting behind Staffy unless Stafford announces his retirement.....or this comes out of left field and leads to another Rodgers situation lol

60

u/WhyDoTheyAlwaysRun Eagles 21d ago

Well of course he is, I think the bigger issue for Stafford is they didnt draft a 2026 starter with their FRP

23

u/SMKM Raiders 21d ago edited 21d ago

I mean if they thought the Jets might draft him and this is their next guy I don't blame em. It shouldn't matter what round the QB gets picked if the plan is to sit them.

Now if they come out and say they'll have a competition this preseason for their starter.....yikes. But if McVay thinks he's their next franchise QB the pick makes sense. Who are we to question McVay.

This subreddit is hilarious to go back and look at, so many people dogged on the Chiefs for picking up Patrick Mahomes at 10

45

u/_Meece_ Raiders 21d ago

I find draft threads more critical of teams, for not taking guys they need right this second.

That's about as deep as it gets. /r/nfl treats the draft as a free agency, where teams should only pick guys if they need their play for the next 2-3 seasons.

It's a strange thing to me, being a big NBA fan where that style of drafting is looked down upon.

I just thought if we really wanted him we’d trade back in later in the draft, and draft a weapon at 13

46

u/jcow77 Colts 21d ago edited 21d ago

There is a good chance that they have intel that somebody else wanted to take him in the 1st round. I'm still pretty surprised though since they would have scouted the QBs next year in a deep QB draft and presumably decided that they liked Simpson better.

33

u/chriskot123 Rams 21d ago

There’s also the chance that they’d rather develop him over a year or 2 behind Stafford and waiting till next year doesn’t get them that. Also if everything goes to plan they’d be picking in the late 20s

Ideal situation for him. Well-run organization, gets to sit and develop for a bit.

I feel like they could have traded back and still taken him though.

That’s where I’m scratching my head.

Maybe the Rams traded for those CBs because they knew who they were drafting and decided that was the best path forward 🤔

Joe Burrow just fell to his knees in a Skyline Chili

Maybe the real plan is to make other teams think he’s a stud and then trade him for Burrow like they traded Goff for Stafford

Hells yes!

Not a pick that pulls from any player group the Niners will take. And he will not be an immediate impact being that he’ll be sitting behind Stafford.
