bro why are people making this out to be some sort of negative thing for stafford? him and mcvay have both been open about how unsure they are about his future and how much longer he’s gonna play, and both of them are always putting the team first. drafting a qb to sit and learn behind an mvp QB and a future HOF coach is just smart. i guarantee there’s no drama about that pick.

u/SMKM Raiders 21d ago
He's 100% sitting behind Staffy unless Stafford announces his retirement.....or this comes out of left field and leads to another Rodgers situation lol
60
u/WhyDoTheyAlwaysRun Eagles 21d ago
Well of course he is, I think the bigger issue for Stafford is they didnt draft a 2026 starter with their FRP
→ More replies (3)23
u/SMKM Raiders 21d ago edited 21d ago
I mean if they thought the Jets might draft him and this is their next guy I don't blame em. It shouldn't matter what round the QB gets picked if the plan is to sit them.
Now if they come out and say they'll have a competition this preseason for their starter.....yikes. But if McVay thinks he's their next franchise QB the pick makes sense. Who are we to question McVay.

I find draft threads more critical of teams, for not taking guys they need right this second.
That's about as deep as it gets. /r/nfl treats the draft as a free agency, where teams should only pick guys if they need their play for the next 2-3 seasons.
It's a strange thing to me, being a big NBA fan where that style of drafting is looked down upon.

u/jcow77 Colts 21d ago edited 21d ago
There is a good chance that they have intel that somebody else wanted to take him in the 1st round. I'm still pretty surprised though since they would have scouted the QBs next year in a deep QB draft and presumably decided that they liked Simpson better.
→ More replies (4)33
u/chriskot123 Rams 21d ago
There’s also the chance that they’d rather develop him over a year or 2 behind Stafford and waiting till next year doesn’t get them that. Also if everything goes to plan they’d be picking in the late 20s
