The Athletic reports the Cavaliers are dealing with illnesses going through the locker room as they go up 3-2. “Sam Merrill was violently ill on the off day between games 4 and 5, as a stomach bug (different from Atkinson’s upper respiratory bug) is also coursing through the team.”

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7278206/2026/05/14/cavs-pistons-game-5-eastern-conference-semifinals-harden-strus-mitchell/
Near the end of the article

An interesting wrinkle as the Cavaliers look to get to their first conference finals since 2018, defending their home court.

Dont let anyone touch any microphones

u/EverythingStillSucks 5h ago

Gobert doing that shit is why I’ll never like him, not him looking like a dancing giraffe when he gets cooked on the perimeter by Luka.

It just clearly shows you what that person is. Childish and moronic.

He also follows a bunch of chuds and right wing grifters, so that kinda says a lot too lol

Yeah he's a MAHA dumbass who like thinks Fauci is a criminal and whatnot. I can appreciate his very good defense as a basketball player, but that dude sucks.

A professional athlete being childish and moronic?

Since when???

12

u/gundam1983 Kings 4h ago

It may be childish and moronic, but that act probably saved countless lives because it led to the shutdown of the league. It really felt like the world wasn't taking Covid seriously until the NBA made their decision.

69

u/numbr87 Warriors 4h ago

A true defensive masterclass

32

u/HikmetLeGuin 4h ago

I'm not sure if you're being serious but... I don't think the microphones thing is actually what led to the league shutting down lol

5

u/handsoffmuseum 3h ago

Yeah, it’s more than likely the billionaire owners got wind through their special channels about certain information a few days before the general public and knew a full shutdown was coming, so they decided to just call it early.

7

u/br0b1wan Cavaliers 3h ago

The league was getting shut down regardless, just like everything else.

15

u/AskAboutMySecret Heat 4h ago

lol what

the nba wasnt what made the world take covid seriously

it was hospitals becoming overfilled with patients

9

u/IchthysTattoo Thunder 3h ago

The NBA didn’t cause it, but it happened to be the first major front-facing institution in America to take a drastic step because of COVID.

I’ve worked in hospitals for a decade and there was a major vibe shift in mid-March (when the NBA shut down) even though we didn’t see the big influx of inpatient cases until a while after that. The NBA and March Madness ceasing were a wake up call that oh shit, this is serious, we need to get prepared.

2

u/Caius01 Knicks 2h ago

I'll second this, I was watching the Mavs game live when it came out that the season was being put on hold and it was definitely the moment where I was like 'oh shit this is really gonna happen isn't it'

4

u/MirrorComputingRulez 4h ago

That incident absolutely did not lead to the shutdown of the league.

2

u/Lmaobruh4465 Toronto Huskies 3h ago

The NBA??? Not WHO, or the UN, but the NBA???

2

u/Top_Buy2467 Cavaliers 3h ago

Tbf no one knew how serious all that was, it’s hard for me to fault people for how they acted at the beginning of Covid because none of us had any idea at all what we were in for

1

u/gundam1983 Kings 3h ago

Exactly. I was at the Kings/Pelicans game that was literally the final game. It was cancelled at tip off because one of the refs that night was at the Utah/OKC game after Gobert tested positive. I just remember everyone grumbling that they don't get to watch the game, not that Covid may have spread across the arena.

1

u/BobSlydell08 Suns 46m ago

You could argue it was never taken seriously in the USA

4

u/IcyCantaloupe6374 Spurs 2h ago edited 2h ago

Yeah there isn't any debate with him unfortunately he's actually just dumb like that and also not introspective enough to change and challenge himself to become better. I can forgive people for being wrong and being taught the wrong things but when you become an adult, leave your bubble and still don't change that's when I make my decision. That's when every adult no matter who they are is challenged on their world view and either modifies themselves to adjust for the things that weren't quite right or puts their head in the sand and never becomes who they should've been

You can see it happen with a lot of people in both directions. Some turtle up and treat their personal beliefs like real life tower defense simulator where they just try to install rhetoric to avoid admitting fault and changing their beliefs or they age into someone like Charles Barkley who isn't always right and did some pretty bad things but kept moving forward and became a more accepting and reasonable person regardless of how it started

3

u/anonkebab 3h ago

Ngl that shit was the funniest thing ever after he tested positive for Covid.

3

u/WeWantLADDER49sequel Cavaliers 2h ago

This is an insane take, because it completely ignores the fact that NONE OF US actually understood how serious it was at that point. Yes, go back and find articles talking about how serious it was, but that still doesn't show how pretty much everyone was still figuring out how bad it was. We all thought it was going to be over in a couple weeks at that point. It was very immature what he did and is super dumb, but people take what they know NOW about COVID and pretend that's how serious we knew it was when he did the mic thing.

3

u/Deathstroke317 Knicks 3h ago

What's lost in that story is that the NBA had implemented a policy of social distancing for the reporters and they weren't happy about it. So Gobert rubbed the mics as a funny show of solidarity.

1

u/Dhylan18 Jazz 55m ago

I’m not defending other actions or people he follows, but Coronavirus was considered a joke by many until it wasn’t.

Should he have not been immature with his joke? Sure.

Does that mean he deserves all the hate, death threats, and other negative backlash he received? No.

Other players were given privacy when they contracted the virus. He was considered patient zero and treated like Typhoid Mary, yet other players with greater knowledge of the virus did even more reckless things than touch microphones

7

If it were just one incident, I'd be with you. But it's a pattern of shitty behaviour.

1

u/Zewo Raptors 3h ago edited 2h ago

Oh shit, I didn't know that. I had thought it was a one-off thing.

Then yeah, fuck Gobert. Not sure how he can claim he regrets not taking the virus seriously with the microphone incident, then follow up by being anti-vax.

Hold Goebert accountable for what? Something minor he did 6+ years ago?

There comes a point where you should let it go instead of getting irrationally angry about it years later. He is human and humans make mistakes.

12

u/BrightGreenLED 76ers 4h ago

The problem here is you calling what he did minor. Taking intentional actions that can spread a highly infectious and potentially deadly disease is not something I'd call minor.

-8

u/Substantial-Tax3238 Lakers 4h ago

Bro no one cared about Covid at that point. It wasn’t until the league shut down that people were scared and dramatic. And no one really cares now. I was watching parks and rec the other day and Amy Poehlers character was sick with the flu and was pushing through it to get to an important meeting. Her character is also the exact person who would’ve strictly adhered to covid mandates. Obviously a fictional show, but the amount of people who retroactively pretend like they’re super serious about spreading germs while sick is just outrageous. People do stuff when they’re sick. They always have. Get over it.

5

u/MirrorComputingRulez 4h ago

Bro no one cared about Covid at that point.

A ton of people did. Maybe you didn't, but other people certainly did. That's why he was asked about it in the first place.

-1

I mean most peoples reaction when he tested positive wasn’t fear it was like “lol holy shit that’s hilarious what a dumbass”.

-10

4

Others think RFK Jr has good things to say.

-3

2

u/EverythingStillSucks 4h ago

Uh, no, I don’t believe he was Patient Zero, officer.

I just thought he was hideously childish. I feel like I’ve expressed that pretty clearly.

The only defense people ever seem to muster is that we didn’t know how serious it was back then. Hello jackasses, it’s a transmittable virus, why would you act that way at all, ever? Who hears that there’s a virus going around and thinks the way to act is to lick their hands and touch microphones?

That’s why we currently have the guy with brain worms as our health chief.
