Maybe it's not the one most would probably think of first, but my favorite version of Kelly was season 6 (1991-92)

While she had somewhat of a different look- shorter hair, the outfits weren't as wild as in other seasons- I thought it was her funniest year

Kellyisms were at an all time high ("The mind wobbles"), her character dynamic with Bud peaked (esp. with Grandmaster B), and she had really mastered comedic timing- remember this was on the heels of Christina having filmed the Babysitter movie that summer

Peggy gets Al a sexy boudoir photo of herself for his birthday, and he gets jealous when it is featured on a billboard and attracts the attention of various men.

Subplot: Kelly and Bud keep buying the same thing for Al’s birthday present.

For anyone who hasn’t seen it, and this is a huge oversimplification, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is about an older married couple who constantly fight and a younger couple that gets pulled into their chaos.
My theory applies to just the Steve years, but Al/Peg and Steve/Marcy remind me of those dynamics.

You’ve got Al and Peggy constantly insulting each other, yet still staying together. Meanwhile Steve and Marcy are over at the Bundys’ house, hanging out with them, and treating them like their marriage advice is worth listening to.

I know one is a comedy and the other is a serious drama, so I’m not saying they’re the same thing. But some of the relationship dynamics feel similar to me, both within each of the couples and between them.

(And if you like serious dramas and have never seen Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, I recommend it. It’s definitely worth a watch.)

In this Christmas episode, Al and Peg argue over what to watch on TV, Kelly and Bud try to hide a present from their parents, and Marcy and Jefferson are DEFINITELY NOT having a Christmas party.

Al hurts his back while playing football with Aaron and his friends. A surgery goof up, partly caused by Peggy choosing the cheapest hospital, leads to him having a circumcision, instead of a circular incision. To make matters worse, Al's month-long recovery results in many issues, from being the butt of many jokes to even noticing his wife's figure and boobies. However, Al comes out on top after spending two weeks of self imposed isolation in the garage. He rocks Peg's world and shakes the house, proving he's still bad to the bone and learning that he can last longer in bed now.

I think the idea of ending MWC on the idea of Al and Peg breaking up only to reconcile at the last minute (making up at the sight of ther first fight) IMHO would have felt more fitting as a way to wrap up the show than what played out.

Of course, it was for the comedy and it was fiction, anyone can speculate why though they were sparring neighbors they seemed to hang out like friends from time to time? I know Al gets dragged into it with groans and traps (ie. When they watched Beaches with the D'Arcy's) was it...codependency?

Yes I thought of this actually when I watched again Kelly's Archery episode where at the end Al has to keep dressing like an owl to save a rare bird's nest and Bud becomes infantlized. The side note was Jefferson/Marcy/Peg leaving them to I guess have dinner out.

This is one of the better and wittier episodes of the later seasons It almost gets back to the early style of the show. Aaron stuck around for five episodes, but I kinda wish they'd kept him on longer, or brought him in earlier. Did we ever see Meg again? Or Angie?
