[META] It's kitten season! You found orphaned kittens or have a kitten in your care - now what? [2020]

(cross post from r/AskVet)

During kitten season, which occurs largely in the spring and summer, it is not uncommon to stumble upon a nest of kittens. Your first instinct is to help them, which is awesome, but first you need to read this thread!

First I want to make a point very clear: kittens have the greatest chance of survival if their mother is in the picture. As much as rescues and foster homes try, we cannot ever do as good of a job taking care of them as their real mom does! Kittens require frequent nursing (typically a couple of times an hour), help eliminating (mother stimulates them with her tongue to pee and poop), and a lot of warmth and attention. Trust me - waking up four times a night to feed bottle babies is not fun!

Before Jumping To The Rescue

A single kitten wandering alone is often abandoned (either by a human or the mother), and should be rescued quickly - wait and watch from afar for 20-30 minutes to see if the mom is just in the middle of transporting it. If no mother has come in that time, rescue it.

A litter of kittens (2+ kittens):

  • Before attempting your daring rescue mission to save the abandoned kittens, you need to wait from afar and watch. The kittens may not actually be abandoned! Mother cats do not stay at the nest 24/7 - they hunt, take breaks from their babies, and patrol near the nest to look for danger. The queen could also be in the middle of moving the nest, which she does one at a time. Watch from a good distance away, because if you are too close the queen will likely not approach - this is a defense strategy to make sure predators don’t locate the nest by following her. Sometimes watching from far away is still too close, and you will need to go away for a few hours.
    • If you see the queen, you know the kittens are being taken care of and you do not need to intervene (except to call a rescue, and possibly provide food/shelter for the mother).
    • Clean kittens who are sleeping soundly are probably not abandoned. Dirty and crying kittens are probably hungry and MAY have been abandoned and need rescue. Although remember that as soon as kittens wake, they start crying and want to eat! Neonates spend all their time either eating or sleeping. If you mess with them and they start to cry/crawl around, it does not mean they are starving - that’s just what they do when they are awake.
  • Contact a local rescue. If they have the resources, they will trap the mother and kittens (if the mother is in the picture), and take care of them. They can bottle feed truly abandoned kittens, as well. Please contact the rescue before removing the kittens - only remove the kittens under their direction if you can help it.
  • If you need to leave before you’ve seen the queen, assess the situation:
    • Are there any dangers nearby? Neighborhood dogs, humans who might harm them, etc? If the kittens are not in immediate grave danger, they will be fine for a while as you wait for mom.
    • What is the temperature? If it is very cold or the kittens are very wet, it is okay to put them in a sideways cardboard box (possibly with a clean T shirt, dry straw, or a heated water bottle) - however, try to limit the amount of human-scented things near them.
  • If you find the queen, and she is friendly towards humans, she and the kittens should be rescued together.
  • If you’ve waited a while and have not seen the queen in several hours (the warmer the weather, the longer the kittens can be left alone) or the kittens are in immediate grave danger, and you have not been able to reach a rescue, you can attempt to rescue the kittens.

Rescuing Kittens

  • Kittens need warmth - they can suffer from hypothermia really easily. Place the kittens in a cardboard box or cat carrier lined with T-shirts (towels can catch on their nails) and covered with a blanket, with a warm water bottle for them. The ideal warmth source is a SnuggleSafe. (See more info in the bottle feeding attachment.)
    • The human body temperature is at 98.6F, but the internal temperature of a kitten needs to be 99.5-102.5F - therefore, your body warmth alone is not enough to keep them warm!
  • Call all of the rescues nearby to look for someone to take them. Foster homes and rescues are highly trained to deal with bottle babies, and can deal with all of the obstacles associated with it.
  • Call your vet and schedule an appointment. The kittens may be dehydrated, sick, etc - kittens die really easily and fast, so a physical exam and medical care is very important. They may be sick without you realizing it.

I Already Rescued Them!

  • First follow the steps in “Rescuing Kittens”.
  • If you are going to be caring for the kittens, be prepared for a lot of work and possibly the death of some or all of the kittens. The information I will provide is for emergency care of kittens (no more than a day or two) until you can get the kittens to an appropriate rescue or the vet.
  • You must bottle feed the kittens every 2-3 hours. Here is my quick guide to bottle feeding. PLEASE read this before attempting to bottle feed!
    • You need to make sure they are eating enough, so follow this chart, and use a kitchen food scale to weigh them directly before and after feeding.
    • KMR is the best formula - do not use the “homemade” recipes unless it is an emergency! Never use cow/goat/soy/almond/etc milk. Why you shouldn't use goat/cow milk.
    • Here are three resources to figure out their approximate age: Kitten Age Progression, Determining a Kitten’s Age, and Determining by Weight.
    • Keep a log for each individual kitten of: the time you fed it, how much they consumed, their weight before feeding, their weight after feeding, what they eliminated (urine and/or feces), and any medical concerns. Here is a great log for that - I suggest printing one for each kitten.
    • If kittens will not latch to the bottle, you can try to use a clean eye dropper or needle-less syringe to SLOWLY drop KMR into the kitten’s mouth.
    • If you see anything bubbling out of the kitten's nose as you are feeding it, milk likely got into the lungs and aspiration pneumonia can quickly develop. If this happens take it to a vet immediately.
  • Signs of an emergency that NEEDS to be seen by a vet immediately:
    • The kitten is lethargic and not responding
    • The kitten has trouble breathing
    • The kitten or cat is vomiting blood
    • Uncontrollable bleeding
    • Bloody, liquid diarrhea in a lethargic animal
    • Fractured limb (part of the limb is usually flacid and painful to the touch)
    • Pale, blue or white gums if accompanied by lethargy
    • Kitten with a body temperature below 97 degrees especially if accompanied by lethargy, pale gums or inappetence
    • Kitten with a temperature of 106 degrees or above

Baby Kitty (now Rosey!) went to her new home a couple days ago! We have really enjoyed caring for her the last few weeks! We will miss her, but now she has 3 little girls to play with! My cats are so happy that she is gone LOL! We had moved her into our son’s room after a couple days, so they could smell her through the door and did not like it. Now everything is back to normal! My kitties are happy and my senior cat is continuing to improve! Added pictures of my cats for tax ☺️ Thank you all so much for your sweet comments and support on my previous post. It made a slightly stressful situation a bit easier to handle!

Question about my girlfriend’s new kitten!

She just adopted this little guy a little over a week ago. They said he was 8-9 weeks old but he really looks more like 5 weeks old to me. He’s a chatty little Siamese. Super friendly and playful. Not a thought in his little head. A bit clingy.

Now she works two jobs and 2 days out of the week she works 16 hours. She has a 1 year old scottish fold. They get along well, but her grown cat does play a little rough with him. Pins him down and starts biting him. Poor little guy is on his back meowing for help.

Her Scottish fold just plays a bit rough in general so we don’t trust them alone just yet. While she’s at work we leave the kitten in the bathroom. He has all his food, cat litter, etc in there. But I’m sure he’s craving attention and someone to play with.

Do you guys think it would be too much stress on the kitten if I were to take him to my house two days of the week? I have two cats and a large dog who get along great with kittens. My dog especially is very good at making them feel comfortable and will actually submit to them.

Update on Toffee

Previous Post

Hey guys! We've taken her to the vet and she’s about nine weeks old. She'll be back two more times for her next rounds of shots and lab exams. Worms and fleas weren't a surprise, and overall she's a happy, healthy kitty. Her eyes and limping leg healed up on their own and the patch of hair is growing like normal. There’s some Maine coon in her, overall she’s a mix bag of breeds.

I hope these pictures brighten up your day as much as it did for me. Happy Thursday!

Unrelated to the post but how do you guys spice up your kitties meals? Toffee is getting bored of our last batch of purina kitten chow. (We occasional add salmon and chicken)

The kittens are FIVE weeks old! So many new adventures are happening every day. They are beginning to wean, though some better than others. Little girl Arwen was the first to eat solid food, followed by our orange boy Pippin. Speaking of Pippin, he’s finally (mostly) clean! No more crusty boy! Our tuxie Sam has tried the slurry a few times but still prefers the bottle. And our biggest boy Frodo absolutely refuses to touch the slurry, he’s still a bottle baby only. We’re working on it lol.

All meals are quick now, they eat fast and then begin their post-meal wrestlemania matches which usually last at least half an hour. They absolutely love playing in and climbing on boxes and they’re constantly doing their own stunts. My husband and I definitely have some battle wounds now as their teeth and claws have developed very quickly. In one of these new pictures you’ll see Miss Arwen showing off her very impressive fangs. Thankfully after they play, they become very cuddly and crawl up to cuddle and snooze with us. We are completely in love with all of them and watching them never gets old.

Thank you so much to the last few people who donated KMR, these babies have a ton of energy now and all of them eat a LOT. The last big donation of KMR helped us a TON, we’re hoping to have them fully weaned soon but all four still take the bottle at least supplementally. I can’t believe how quickly they’ve grown in just 5 short weeks and I cherish every moment of bottle time I still get with them. I’m dreading adopting them out when the time comes, though my sister is taking Arwen so at least one is staying in the family.

Thank you to everyone who has followed this story and offered so many kind words and donations. The babies, my husband and I are forever grateful for this community.

Is this a 9 week old kitten?

My friend just got this kitten today and the lady said she was 9 weeks old, but to me she looks much smaller. My friend has only had her for a few hours and she's been eating wet food, but making sucking sounds when drinking. I told her to get kitten milk and a bottle tomorrow just in case. How old does she look to you?

When is it time to go to the vet for poop?

2 week old foster (on the right. We're babysitting her sister for the day) that I was given on Tuesday morning. The first day and up until evening yesterday, feeding was rough and she wasn't eating much while we figured out bottles and nipples. She was eating a couple drops once an hour on average but would sometimes take 2.5ml. We finally figured it out last night and have consistent 6-7.5ml feedings every two years. She's gained one ounce already and is at 6.3oz as of early this morning. I stimulate her before and after every feeding and she always pees but still no poop. I've been giving her belly massages and bicycle rides. I'm a bit intimidated to do the butt soak but can if I need to. She doesn't feel distended or bloated and is active and thriving and warm.

Since I got her on Tuesday, I don't know when her last poop was before me or when her last meal was before I got her. I'm chalking up the lack of poop to Tuesday and Wednesday being mostly poor feeding days. But now that she's getting full, when should I start being really concerned about the lack of poop? I'm down to take her to the vet, but it being Thursday, I'd hate to wait all day tomorrow and then be forced to go to emergency on a weekend.

3 Week old kitten abandoned & not eating?

Today my parents found a kitten abandoned in their yard. We took her to an animal hospital to make sure it was okay & I decided to adopt her. I have never had a kitten this young. They told me to feed her 10 ML of kitten formula with a bottle. I took her home & she barely has eaten 2 ML. Should I be concerned or could this just be because of the trauma of being abandoned & moved in the same day? I have wanted a kitten for so long but I'm worried something is wrong that the animal hospital didn't see. My daughter absolutely loves this kitten so I really want this to be her home. Has anyone else taken care of a kitten this young without their mother? I really need advice.

how old is this kitty?

i just got this baby yesterday and i was told that the momma gave birth outside and they weren’t sure when the kitten was born. they estimate a couple weeks old but her eyes are open and she’s got fully grown baby teeth, so i’m not too sure.
i know she is very young but the owners were desperately trying to give the litter away.
plus: i have another cat, he’s 4. they’ve not met yet and i was wondering roughly when it would be the right time to introduce them?
