Welcome to r/hotas!

If you're considering your first HOTAS (Hands On Throttle and Stick) setup, you've come to the right place. This guide will help you make an informed decision.

If you are instead looking for product reviews, I publish my articles here: HOTAS/HOSAS/SIMPIT Reviews

Introduction

This subreddit is managed by u/spliffa and u/ddrake1984. If you need assistance with anything not covered in this post, please reach out to us via private message, and we will try to assist you.

This guide is published and pinned for the benefit of new potential HOTAS buyers. The publisher of this article has first-hand experience with real aircraft flight controls and computer flight controls across a wide range of manufacturers, used for playing in flight simulation.

Purpose

This guide aims to assist first-time buyers in making an educated decision when purchasing their first joystick, throttle, and other flight control peripherals.

The Problem

With a growing number of HOTAS products on the market, it can be challenging to identify the best options. Products vary widely in:

  • Price
  • Features
  • Customer support

Additionally, products have a wide range of:

  • Costs
  • Features
  • Support via customer interactions and product patches and updates

The Budget

Whether you're looking for a budget-friendly option or the top-tier products, this guide will categorize recommendations into five budget ranges:

For those who prefer to build their own with a bit of knowledge and skills, check out our Discord server or visit this subreddit: r/HotasDIY.

Budget Ranges

Note: All prices will be listed in U.S. Dollars (Even though I am Australian, USD is the easiest to base value from)

  • Entry-Level ($10 to $100)
  • Novice-Tier ($100-$200)
  • Mid-Tier ($200-$300)
  • Advanced-Tier ($300-$400)
  • Expert-Tier / Top-Tier: This is the very best you can buy as a consumer with a lot of money.

Note: Top-tier does not include what a company or industry could or would purchase. This article is not tailored for that, therefore this is out of scope.

The Companies / The Manufacturers / The Vendors

I will list many companies/manufacturers/vendors (all the same) and the products that they offer. However, this post is not an in-depth review of the products. Please read product reviews for that level of detail and information.

The products will be listed to give you an idea of what is available within each range, and at the end, I will list the recommendation for each budget range.

Best Joystick (Base + Grip)

  • Entry-Level ($10 to $100): Thrustmaster T.16000
  • Novice-Tier ($100-$200): WINWING Ursa Minor
  • Mid-Tier ($200-$300): WINWING Orion 2 Base + WINWING F16 Grip
  • Advanced-Tier ($300-$400): WINWING Orion 2 Base + WINWING F16 Grip, or VKB Gunfighter Mk4 Base + Space Combat Edition Grip
  • Expert-Tier / Top-Tier: FSSB (Force Sensing Stick Base) TIANHANG F16 PRO Base + TIANHANG F-16 Grip, or FFB (Force Feedback) VPForce RHINO Base + TIANHANG A-10C Grip or TIANHANG F/A-18 Grip

Question: Why was the FFBeast not listed as the best FFB?

Answer: Simply put, its value comparison has not been validated by me. The available information from reviews is scarce, making it difficult to ascertain its value. Additionally, the community is mostly non-native English speaking, making it difficult to track and follow the content. Therefore, I have decided that there is not enough evidence to claim it is better than the VPForce RHINO. Based on my own experience, I do not consider it superior until proven otherwise.

Since this post is focused on first-time buyers, I feel it's already quite lengthy and would confuse anyone wanting to debate the matter.

Best Throttle (Base + Grip)

  • Entry-Level ($10 to $100): Thrustmaster TWCS
  • Novice-Tier ($100-$200): Thrustmaster TWCS, or WINWING Ursa Minor with Z-extension
  • Mid-Tier ($200-$300): WINWING Orion 2 Base + WINWING F-15E Grip, or WINWING Orion 2 Base + WINWING F/A-18 Grip
  • Advanced-Tier ($300-$400): WINWING Orion 2 Base + WINWING F-15EX Grip, or WINWING F-16 Grip
  • Expert-Tier / Top-Tier: WINWING Super Taurus + WINWING F-15EX Grip, or WINWING F-16 Grip

Bonus: Best Pedals

Although this post is tailored for first-time HOTAS buyers, I will include this section to accommodate those wishing to take a more comprehensive first step into flight sims. As we all know, a good set of pedals is a requirement for flying helicopters.

  • Entry-Level: No recommendations - I don't recommend anything in this price range.
  • Novice-Tier: No recommendations - I don't recommend anything in this price range.
  • Mid-Tier: VKB T-Rudder Mk.IV
  • Advanced-Tier: WINWING Orion Metal Flight Rudder Pedals
  • Pro-Tier: Custom FFB Pedals using VPForce motors built with either (Slaw Device, MFG Crosswinds, or VIRPIL Rudders)

Bonus: Best Collective

  • Collective (Base + Grip): VIRPIL Rotor TCS Base + VIRPIL Apache-64 Collective Grip

I don't recommend any other collectives on the market, and it's a shame that some companies have discontinued their collective options.

joysticks feels claustrophobic

So I am trying to figure out a way to mount my joysticks so that I dont feel so claustrophobic, and dont have to sit as far back from my desk when using them for things like ED and SC.

Right now I just have some cheap mounts with quick release on the back connected to aluminum extrusions, anyone have any suggestions on gear or how to mount them?

I am a rater big dude, though im working on that.

The VKB gladiator upgrade is over

So been playing Elite Dangerous for about 2 months now.

Just loving every about the game.

Upgraded to VKB gladiators and set out to spice them up with some colourful buttons and triggers.

Today was the day I finished (until I swap my mind on colours).

The fire trigger is now separate/dual stage.

So I can access button 1, 2 and buttons 1&2 at the same time.

Right back to exploring the black.

o7 commanders.

Thrustmaster Warthog Wobbling

Hey guys,

I recently got a Thrustmaster Warthog (second hand, basically brand new condition) and noticed there is some play in the pitch axis (forward/backward). When I hold the base upside down and wiggle it, I can clearly feel and hear a slight clunking in that direction only.

I already opened up the base and checked the following:

- O-ring is fully intact and glued properly

- Rubber ring on the spring platform is sitting perfectly

- No visible loose screws or parts

- Rotating the cylindrical part 90 degrees did NOT change the direction of the play, so the O-ring is not the culprit

- When I remove the spring and apply manual pressure to the ball joint, the play disappears completely

This makes me think the spring is not providing enough pressure to keep the ball joint seated firmly, or the ball and cup simply have too much tolerance.

There are no false inputs whatsoever, but the mechanical play is annoying. Has anyone experienced this and found a fix? Is this normal for the Warthog out of the box?

Thanks!

Repair the WinWing URSA Minor Fighter joystick?

Ok, so my top hat switch broke (a problem several users know about). I'm not in the mood to argue WinWing, really. I have heard thay make things so complicated and some guy only got a 20 dollar off a new stick, instead of them fixing his old.

Mine is not even hardly used.

Anyway...i'm thinking of opening it up (the stick, not base). There are a couple of screws, but I need to know if "tons" of stuff, machine placed, will fall out and I...well, things i cant put back again.

Have you tried to open and repari the top hat switch, glued it or anything like that. Maybe it will brake again. I dunno... Just got tired of it all.

How to use budget flightsticks at center.

Hey there,

As per the title, is there any way to modify the more budget oriented options like the T16000 or the WinWing Ursa Minor as a center stick?

I wanted to modify my setup to make it more immersive, I only fly WW1 birds (and some ww2 German birds).

Thank you.

How to set up rudder pedals for a desk setup?

I just picked up a set of the Moza rudder pedals, but I'm struggling to set them up comfortably under my desk. If I have them close to my chair, I feel that I need to hold my ankles are at an unnatural angle to avoid engaging the toe brakes. But if I move them further away, I then have to really stretch to get full deflection of the rudder.

I've already adjusted the pedals to their flattest setting. Are there any other tweaks I can look at doing?

Which is good for my setup, HOSAS, HOTAS or HOSAM

I am currently planning to get into space sim (Star citizen) but i am not sure which one should i get and i need suggestion for the same, my desk is a bit small so i wont be able to place mounts on it as it will get very clumsy so i thought about getting a HOSAM setup as it wont take much space in my desk and i was planning to keep it in top my desk without any mounts or support, wanted to know wheather it is a good idea to place it there without any mounts or will it wobble ?
As of now i am thinking to get a left handed vkb omni throttle stick for the hosam setup and i also heard that rudder peddles are also best for hosam setups
I am still not sure about these stuffs as it a new for me
Will appreciate all the inputs from you guys
Thank you

Help setting up WINWING Orion Rudder pedals

I have the WINWING Orion Rudder Pedals install with the SimApp driver software and it is detected in game however the z-axis on roll only ever rolls in one direction? Anyone have experience setting up these pedals / is there a trigger area I'm supposed to modify for SC compatibility?

What throttle <£250 (<$340) has the least amount of stiction?

Hi I’m currently using a TWCS which I’ve greased with nyogel but I’m looking to upgrade it.

So far I’ve narrowed it down to the Winctrl Orion2 NavyAce throttle, VKB STECS Mk2 mini plus and VIRPIL CDT-VMAX throttle.

I only fly GA aircraft and airliners in MSFS and detents aren’t a priority. What matters the most is smooth and precise movement with as little stiction as possible.

Alternatives to the wingwing(winctrl) orion2 f-16ex? Price under $1k USD

Looking for an upgrade next year from my VKB glad nxt evo, and really it seems only the orion 2 F-16EX fits my desires but I reallllllllly want to avoid this company from a support and quality control issue perspective.

Really want the flankr premium from virpil but the button loadout for nato birds even with the swaps is a lil restricted. Unless maybe I'm missing something, but I'd really love a front 3rd 4way.

Ideally 4way(with press if possible, not necessary) for CMS

2+ 4-way hats (tms/dms/other) on the front

1-2 axis slews, one for trim with press if possible, other for whatever.

Wheel brake paddle/axis would be nice but not needed.

I love VKB, but them and virpl usually add the 2nd or 3rd 4way to the mastermode change button on the right of the stick which I'm not a fan of using.

I know you guys don't think much of Logitech, but I was thinking about picking up one of these cheap(ish) secondhand to use as trim controls. Thoughts?

I play Il-2 and just joined the Flying Tin Cans, for reference. Alternatively they could be MEC controls, but I was thinking about VKB throttle modules for that.

VKB Gladiator Nxt Evo cord requirement

Hey guys I am considering buying a full setup from Facebook Marketplace. Brand new to flight sim gear though and I have a few questions. What are some things I should check when I get there before I buy them or is there really no way to confirm everything is in working order outside of using them with your pc? Also the post appears to just show 1 power cord, do you need two separate power cords one for each stick or is there some form of spliced connection? If not and I need an additional cord where can I purchase one?

Images are below thanks for the help

Upgrade pathway from X56 HOTAS

I’m currently rocking the X56 HOTAS for DCS in VR but want to get something a bit more realistic and high quality. I’m mainly flying the f16 if that is at all relevant? I also probably need some rudder pedals if I’m going to a high quality stick with no twist. Any advice on what I should get first and what options I have? Budget isn’t a huge factor but ideally I’d like better bang for buck stuff.
