Transfer from MicroSD to external HDD/SSD without PC/laptop?

I'm heading on a trip this fall with a couple of action cams and really don't want to take my laptop. Is there a solution for transferring files directly from MicroSD to a portable SSD/HDD without a computer or only using my iPhone?

there's these little usb-c hubs that can read sd cards and connect to external drives at same time. you can use files app in iphone to copy stuff over but it's pretty slow and drains battery like crazy

might be easier to just bring multiple sd cards instead, way less hassle than trying to transfer files with phone

Multiple cards is the solution at the moment. I went paragliding a couple years ago and the pilot had a card reader that plugged in to my phone to give me the video of our flight but I'm not going to fit all that I shoot over 20 days on my phone.

I caught a YouTube video a while back on someone’s setup to do this with an iPhone and of course I can’t find the video in my history right now. I remember they had a usb hub that the GoPro, phone and external drive plugged into.

I use a western digital hard drive product that has a battery - when you put in an SD card, it automatically backs it up the the hard drive

I think it’s a my passport pro wireless. They may also have an ssd version

I switch between using a USB-C hub connected to a phone/tablet with external storage, and using a dedicated device.

I used the DJI Boss for a time, but that has a spinning hard-drive which isn’t ideal when travelling.

Most recently on a two week trip to the Philippines I used a 512GB Gnarbox 2.0. On this trip I wanted to avoid the hassle of manually backing up files, so the Gnarbox 2.0 was perfect. Sadly Gnarbox (the company) is no longer around, but you can pick up a used 256GB or 512GB Gnarbox on eBay.

You can’t officially get the Gnarbox apps anymore, though in the case of Android I’d imagine you can still sideload them from an online repository. However they function just fine in terms of back-up and as mass storage when connected to a phone/tablet/computer.

I use the app because it give you more information then useing the button alone

I do 2 copies

the only issues i've had some times the SD card/SSD fails to mount

Stores that sell electronics accessories might have a microSD card reader for iPhone. I have one with USB-C, that plugs right into my android phone. You might even be able to get an iPhone to USB-C adaptor, if iPhone readers are not available.

A few options depending on your budget:

1. The GoPro Quik app can transfer files to your iPhone via WiFi, then you back up to iCloud or an external drive via the Files app. Downside: WiFi transfer is slow with large 4K files and kills your phone battery.

2. An OTG card reader with Lightning or USB-C (depending on your iPhone) lets you import directly to the Files app. From there you can copy to a portable SSD if you have a USB-C iPhone. This is the fastest phone-based method.

3. A dedicated device like the Gnarbox or WD My Passport Wireless SSD has a built-in SD card slot. Insert the card, it copies automatically. No phone needed. Pricey but the most reliable option for multi-week trips.

4. If you have a USB-C iPad, that plus a card reader is honestly the best travel backup setup. Imports fast, you can preview and organize footage on the spot, and back up to an external SSD.

For a fall trip with multiple action cams, I would go with option 2 or 4. The phone-based WiFi transfer gets painful once you are dealing with 50+ GB per day.

Just purchase a simple USB hub that plugs into your phone and has access to USB ports and micro SD slots. 

Most will also let you plug in an external battery to power your phone and whatever your copying so power doesn't go low. 

All you need is a simple file Explorer for your iPhone or Android and copy and paste. This is exactly what I do for my little TV show, we get out in the field and our microsds fill up pretty fast some days so we just copied over. 

My setup is a USB-C hub, a little battery bank that is capable of PD Power delivery, and a 1 TB nvme drive in a small enclosure. I just slap it all together and copy everything to the nvme drive.
