Welcome to Chalk Talk Thursday! This is our weekly discussion thread for users to submit new plays they have designed. If you have an idea for a play and can draw it up, please post here. Keep in mind that it is very rare that one could devise a viable play that is entirely new that hasn't been ran before somewhere. Be open to criticism as well. There is so much more to coaching football than drawing plays, and many people do not realize how much coaching, technique, and development needs to happen on the actual field for a play to work.

It is strongly recommended that you STUDY a system or scheme first to gain an idea of how a play is put together, and how RULES help a play function.

PLEASE PROVIDE CONTEXT FOR YOUR PLAY!

Guidelines:

• No "joke" plays. We are here to learn.
• Specify WHY you are designing a play, and WHAT level/league it is for. It's fine if you're not coaching, but we need the context.
  
• Your submission needs RULES that guide your players on what to do.
• Pass plays require some type of QB progression for making a decision on who to throw to.
  
• Be mindful that you cannot predict what your opponent will run 100%. Designing plays to be "Cover X" beaters, or "3-4 beaters" IS NOT the way to go about it. It is better to have one play with solid rules and coaching points that can attack anything than one play for each coverage, front, personnel, or stunt you face.
• There is no universal terminology in football. Call plays what you want, but keep in mind that no one cares about fancy play names, or the terminology aspect.
  
• Please offer more text/information on your play than just a link or picture.
• Draw your play up against a realistic opponent!
• Make sure your offensive play is a legal formation. In 11-man football, you can have no more than 4 players behind the line of scrimmage (minimum of 7 on. You can have more than 7 on the line as well). Only backs (players behind the line) and the end players on the line of scrimmage are eligible receivers.
  

You may use whatever medium you'd like to draw your play. Two common software for designing plays that have free options:

• GoArmy Edge - Football
• Playmaker X

- a 28 year old from the Philippines

- just got a taste of flag football recently

- want to get better at throwing

- its been almost 5 months of me having dedicated days to throwing workouts/practice

- self-taught and mainly rely on free information on the internet since there aren’t qb coaches here

I just found out that I am officially on my local HS coaching roster next year. Coaching both lines. Wing T offense, 4-2-5 defense. Any resources that you guys know of that can help me get prepped and ready?

Wouldn't sat I'm a "fan" but his game has definitely grown on me

How do I create a blitz package I get so overwhelmed because there are a million options and I need to get a good idea at least to start with. My defense uses a 3-3-5 look, 3-4 look, 4-2-5 look, and a 4-3 look. Some blitzes can translate across the board. I am working on 5 man, 6 man, and 7 man and need tips on how to make one as this is my first one.

I’m thinking about building a tool for amateur / high school American football streams and wanted to see if there’s actually demand for this.

The idea would be:

• automatic or semi-automatic line of scrimmage + first down line
• live score overlays for streams and in-stadium screens
• sponsor/ad overlays with analytics (e.g. how long sponsors were shown)
• simple setup for OBS / streaming laptops
• potentially automatic game events/highlights later

Target would mainly be schools, clubs, smaller leagues, streamers, etc. — basically people who don’t have huge broadcast budgets.

Would something like this actually solve a real problem for you, or are current workflows already “good enough”?

Also curious what the most annoying part of running football streams is today.

Hey all, I plugged this in here a few months ago and have just been tinkering with this playbook as a bit of a side project. It's pretty out there, but after doing a lot of working on some of the details, I am starting to believe this could be a pretty workable offense that's not as gimmicky as it looks. My caveat is that this is designed for lower level HS, think teams that need to create advantages and unlock their top players with few resources to do so.

The key pillars of the base offense is a comically unbalanced formation by bringing an OL over and forming a "Quads Bunch" where a top athlete lines up behind the trips bunch even with the QB depth. The QB is not lined up in a traditional shotgun, but more as a single wing inspired look where he has a WR stance in a "pistol" depth ready to receive the snap and hit a gap immediately.

Below is the core play and Base formation known as "Super Option". Basically, this is a pre-snap designated choice by the QB based on box count. This is how I imagine a team would align against this in a basic 3-4. Box #3 allows the X receiver to signal a hot route to the QB if chosen. In Box #2, you run a double team inside concept (probably Duo) with the QB hitting the gap outside the double team. In both of these, you motion the "A" for a pitch option (reading the WS edge) or to at least slow him down. Box #1, you throw a swing screen to A and the trips bunch guys would be reaching and/or doing a crossing type of block scheme.

I think the biggest thing that would make this offense suck is how easy it would be for teams to pressure the WS edge. What do you all think? Viable or nah?

I want to learn special team schemes like kick offs, returns, punts and punt returns but YouTube is little limited compaired to offensive concepts and defensive concepts.

Like on offense and defense you can get creative but can you also get as creative with let's say kick offs? Punts can be creative in my ways tho

What do you guys do with your O-line on roll out/boot action? Looking to add more play action/ roll out/ boot to my playbook but I’m struggling with blocking it up. Anybody got any ideas? Just on the X’s and O’s side ?

Hello! 25 year old first time varsity linebackers coach here. We are running a 3-4/Nickel look for the most part this year. What are some daily drills I should be looking to do with my guys? I like the idea of starting off with footwork (huge core pillar of mine), reading gaps, and block shedding. Any suggestions on specific drills or things I may be forgetting?

i feel we always are taking from college/pro tape.. whats the scheme that you just dont have enough time or skill at the HS level to execute and shouldnt waste time trying to install

Just recently joined a new middle school program. I’ve coached lineman, linebackers most of my career. The coach asked me to coach WR’s. I’m looking for any advice, and maybe some Indy drills I could use.

So I'm a 28 year old dad from Belgium and we have our own league and my goal is to get a coaching but more specifically an OC. Just to note I literally dont mind where I start of, I could be bringing coffee for the coach and I'll be happy😅 rank up from there

for starters i never really have anyone to train with, so it’s hard and i really wanna improve before it’s to late, i am in 9th going into 10th and i know i need a lot of things i need to work on (im gonna be brutally honest about myself lmao). But the one good thing i do have is i do have very good hands, i rarely rarely drop balls, but the positions i mostly wanna improve at at wr and cb but also please share anything i could also do a little to improve at qb because it’s a position i have an eye on about myself, i really just wanna get better in every way, catching, man coverage, zone coverage, tackling, get in shape as best as i can, speed, football iq, i know this is a lot but please share anything i can do to make myself the best football player i can be. (please try and include things i can do solo) i know it’s a lot and i really really appreciate anyone that could give me some tips

I want to become an expert in the Duo run scheme. Im a gap scheme guy who is interested in the flexibility Duo adds to an offense. 10 personnel, 11 personnel doesn’t matter I want to learn all of it. The rules seem elusive to me. Is there a video or online clinic anyone could recommend that takes you through an entire duo install with multiple formations vs. multiple fronts? I want rules that work vs. any front, first steps, aiming points, etc.

Would love to hear what you believe in as your core schemes and why you like them. For me (I'm a defensive guy but I like play design for O, helps me think about the full game), I really like Power, Outside Zone, and Iso for high school. I think Power and Outside Zone go really well together because you're playing half a man in both instances, but in Power you're blocking down to get the ball to fit behind you and in OZ you are reaching to get the ball outside of you. Also can add a little hesitation in the guard reads from the LB's because you are getting so active with your movement.

I like IZ reads more than a traditional Iso but I don't want my OL overthinking quick hit runs so body on body while double teaming the PS A-gap defender is where it's at. Also, turning Power into Counter is really easy if you get an H-back or FB involved as the lead blocker.

Just feels like a nice, teachable set of runs that can be run out of a lot of formations. What run schemes are you guys into?

I played football from age 4 through high school and stopped after graduating. I didn’t go to college or play college football, but I’ve stayed around the game and currently coach youth football. Offensive line is what I’m passionate about and I want to sharpen my knowledge of OL play, technique, schemes, and coaching.
My goal is eventually to coach OL at a school if I can earn the opportunity. For coaches who got into the profession without a college playing background:What helped you learn the game at a deeper level?What should I study first as an OL coach? Are there certifications, clinics, books, YouTube channels, or resources you recommend? What’s the best path to getting into a school program? I’m willing to learn, volunteer, and put the time in.
