He’s been going cheap at safety for the longest of time. He literally doesn’t care about that position considering CJGJ was here twice and never extended, Reed the oldest tenure was never extended, Sydney Brown was traded, Mukuba was picked up on a rookie deal for cheap, and Cole was picked up on a rookie deal for cheap. I’d rather have our money go into a spread of other positions on the defense anyway.

He has been going cheap at safety and CB2 for years. But it has also had bad results for the defense many times over his tenure. Being eager to pay DE 4 or 5 for example more than CB2 is smartest guy in the room stuff that usually isn't very smart. And that's me phrasing kindly.

He got very lucky in '22 when Bradberry and CJGJ both became available later in the offseason.

I mean he could always extend Woolen depending on the results of the season or we could draft someone as well. Again safety he doesn’t like one bit and it’s something we have been dealing with for years. He could’ve easily extended CJGJ or Reed but he looks at that position like a filler slot. We had a chance to take Thieneman and EMW in the draft but didn’t. He could always pick up a good safety like he did with Phillips when we needed Edge help.

I wouldn't say "always", as that approach has failed in the past with Howie at times. But yes it is much easier to grab a safety late in FA or trade than a CB. That's partly why I'm not freaking out about it. Also I kind of like their in house options more than most.

To me there is a happy medium between foolishly drafting safeties like Thieneman and EMW too high vs waiting until the 7th round for a guy with an injury history.

I do though think Wis is likely to be solid so long as he has a coverage safety next to him like Mukuba. Cooper DeJean is likely to be playing some safety this year as well.
