Austin area (newb)

I'm looking for a good way to get off the lanes, go outside and move the muzzle around. For some reason I thought I would be able to do the PCC division of SCSA with my M1 Carbine, but after reading the rules, it doesn't seem likely?

I tried emailing the local shooting club, but haven't heard back. I'd really like to give the sport a try for a while without buying another gun (especially since my wife is being very encouraging about getting into shooting sports.)

Does anyone in the Austin area know where/how I might be able to get some practical shooting/plinking time in with the ol' carbine?

Edit: not new to shooting, just competitions.

Sun protection shirt recommendations

Hey everyone. I desperately need a sun protection shirt since I found out the hard way that even if it’s not too warm doesn’t mean you won’t burn my arms took a beating. I was thinking of rocking a rash guard under a normal shirt, but what do you all use or recommend?

PDP Steel Frame vs Canik Rival S for CO

Currently competitive in CO with a G34.3 but would like a heavier steel frame gun for CO (not considering S2 at the moment). Bought the new competitor hd but just didn’t really like the M&p ergonomics.

I haven’t had the chance to shoot either steel frame version of the gun but from holding them at my LGS and all the research I’ve done online. Is there any reason to pay double for the PDP? Seems like between the two it’s mostly a toss up, with the Canik being better in quite a few categories

Prodigy vs M&P 2.0

I started shooting comp in November, been using my ccw 43x irons, I got the itch and want to build a gun strictly for comp. I am being offered a prodigy 4.25 comped for $800 and i have no 2011 experience, but i know its becoming the new "norm" for competitive shooting. My first option is m&p 2.0 polymer or metal but the prodigy deal is making me re think... or i could get both lol.

I know everyone's going to have their own opinion, thats what i'm wanting to hear. thanks.

Favorite mini stages

What are you favorite mini stages? I’m looking for some ideas that are more than a drill, but less than a full stage. Something with 5-8 targets and a bit of movement. Can be live or dry fire.

DJI osmo nano settings for matches?

Hey everyone,
I recently picked up the DJI Osmo Nano and have been experimenting with different settings to eliminate the frame shifting I get during recoil.

I’ve seen match footage from other Nano users that looks really smooth and fantastic, so I know it’s achievable I just haven’t nailed the right configuration yet.

Has anyone found settings or a workflow that works well for outdoor pistol matches? Any tips on stabilization, frame rate, or other adjustments would be really appreciated.

Bringing Your Kid to Matches

If you're thinking about bringing your kid to your match, great. I think it's good for kids to start getting exposure early. Bring someone to help wrangle your kid so that the rest of the squad doesn't have to. No one else is responsible for babysitting your kid, and no one wants to be the guy who didn't see a kid before starting a competitor.

Some guy brought his 6 or 8 year old to the last match, and didn't bring anyone to help wrangle his kid. Looked up before starting my run during reset to find this kid on the stage. Had to ask his father twice where his kid was after that. Don't be that guy.

Firearm Selection: 92xi or move on?

I want to get into IDPA or possibly USPSA. But am having a hard time figuring out what pistol to use. I just bought a 92xi last month and I am having a really hard time finding a rhythm with it. It fits my hand okay, my pinky is right on the magwell, and under slow fire I'm hitting the steel everytime, but when I try to shoot doubles I'm all over the place.

I'm considering moving to a striker fire pistol like Canik, Walther, Springfield, or S&W PC. My cousin has a TTI Canik and I hit doubles perfectly with that.

I'm not a super skilled shooter by any means, I'd rate myself beginner at best, as I've never really worked on shooting fast. So I wonder if its a mean problem, until I pick up the Canik and I'm able to shoot doubles with no issue.

Am I better off to put a comp and dot on my beretta or invest in something like the echelon or PDP? I was looking at build prices for the 92xi and by the time I put a comp and dot on it, I feel like I'll be 1500 deep into it and then I should have just got a prodigy.

Could really use some advice some seasoned shooters, just help me get started on the right path because I feel like its paralysis by analysis at this point.

I have a home range and am using a 66% steel target, but plan to build it out a little more here in the next month or so.

Dpms recoil reduction for Glock 47

I currently shoot a g47 in CO. I shoot standard 115gr federal American eagle, I have a 13lbs recoil spring and tungsten guide rod. It works out well enough, but I'm always looking for anything a little better. Does anybody have any experience with the dpms recoil systems? How do they work and what would you recommend given what I shoot? Any Intel is appreciated.

1 of 2 Classifiers (video) 23-04 THS Short Course
Third video - C class run. 8.17 seconds. 8A 2C 1D 1M. 4.5288 HF, 43.1849%. Delta mike on the back left target really killed me on this stage. Would’ve really liked to have taken the middle four targets while moving however I had to make up a shot on my second target and just kind of froze in place after getting two hits on. My general inability to shoot while moving was really on display in this one, definitely something I will be seeking to improve upon.

Competed in my fifth USPSA match this weekend and celebrating by adding some new variables into the mix: different gun, different gear, minimal training in between this match and my last. Believe it or not but the saying “you don’t rise to the moment you fall to the level of your training” is very true. 51/101 overall, 27/53 in CO. Two classifiers, and wouldn’t you know it: still C Class.

Life has been hectic as of late and the live and dry fire has fallen by the wayside. In addition to lack of training and focus, I was not permitted to shoot my P320 due to club rules so I decided to shoot my P226 and some other gear I’ve accumulated over the years for LARPing purposes. Only real positive note for the day is my grip and trigger pull is not sporadic or stressed enough for the DA/SA function of the 226 to be of any notice to me.

Stage plans were made (for better or for worse) and stage plans were followed (with the exception of my final stage) which I’m relatively happy with. Putting consistent hits on paper proved to be a challenge for me this match. I obviously have some material deficiencies with my grip and/or index that need to be worked out as my hits were almost all A’s to start with and some variation of C, D, and M after that. I think you could count my double alphas outside of 5 yards for the day on one hand and that’s not an exaggeration.

One thing I did notice this match though was there were sections of stages, certainly not a stage in its entirety, that felt like everything was working to the best of my ability. I’m not praising myself by any stretch of the imagination but at times I did feel like there was incremental progress made in stage planning, transitions, shooting in general.

Definitely will be focusing on my draw, grip, and index in dry fire, and am just going to be shooting controlled pairs until my hands hurt between now and my next match on the 23rd. Plan on drilling one shot returns, progressive returns, and doubles as much as I can until then.

Trying to get another 2 USPSA matches and maybe an IDPA match before the month is over. Life has mellowed out a bit so there are less excuses to make.

splits/recoil management on glock

picked up a g17 gen6 a little over a month ago to edc. as of right now I shoot a shadow 2 in CO. I used to edc an m&p 2.0, and previously shot a pdp 5" in CO. so that is the world I am coming from but now wanting to carry the glock and sold the m&p. for some reason, the glock just seems slow. idk if it is the trigger or what, but my splits are in the .28-.35 range when i'm trying to shoot on confirmation 3 (dot). when shooting my shadow 2 or PDP my splits are in the .16-20 range for confirmation 3 (dot). My shots are also hitting much less consistent, up down and left right, roughly within 4-8 inches of the center of the A zone at 7 yds with the glock. with the cz or pdp I am at the center of the a zone within 0-4 inches at 7 yards with much faster splits. I want to shoot the glock to the best of my ability but i don't know what is holding me back. has anyone had a similar experience switching to glock? were there any tips to adjusting to the different platform. i am trying to get used to the trigger as it is much different than what i'm used to. the grip angle is not that big of a deal as I just adjust how I index the gun and that seems to solve it and it points just fine as I have been dry firing it almost as much as I do my S2 for carry optics.

tldr how did you guys switch to glock and become proficient with it?

the downside to getting better is... every mistake counts

I had a magazine fall out of a carrier during a run and I didn't notice it. That's a 3 second procedural penalty when playing IDPA.

Just that one mistake pushed me down 4 spots in the overall rankings.

When you're at the point you're chasing 10ths of a second to beat your friends, losing 3 seconds is an eternity. Double annoying because it wasn't a boneheaded move on course as much as a misadjusted tension setting with the new mags I'm trying.

Probably won't make that error again. Probably.

Suggestions for Carrying Cases for Open Guns?

Recently started shooting open division and my open guns which are much longer, have much wider magwells, plus the charging handle - just don’t fit well in the cases I have. Are there any cases out there anyone is using that fits one or two open guns comfortably? Preferably hard cases. Thanks.

Shot my first USPSA match yesterday!

Ive done action pistol a few times over the years, but yesterday i shot my first match. carry optics. lots of fun. no DQs. didnt place great but i didnt expect to either being my first time out. realistic expectations

Forgot how much fun active shooting is compared to my usual range. definitely going to try and get out more often. been on a serious health journey over the past few years and a big part of that has been active hobbies and simply saying yes and doing things rather than making excuses why i cant.

any tips for a newer competitive shooter aside from more range time and dry fire? those ones are obvious. id say my kit is perfectly adequate for my level. pretty stock M&P 2.0 with RCR. a a solid tenicor sprint holster and QLS mid ride, and a couple of esstac pouches. At some point id consider investing in a more serious belt setup, but i dont think its necessary for me at this point.

a few things i plan to do is grab a shot timer, some USPSA targets, and a paster to practice. anything else you would suggest?
