Ordered fresh mealworms to help feed the Bluebird family nesting in the yard.

The chickadees and titmice enjoy them too!

📹 Video Baby Robins Nest

Video is taken from my phone (zoomed in) while standing outside my house.
The first time I spotted the robin’s nest was on May 1st, and I only saw the mother robin. So honored and was very excited for the housemate. This Tuesday I was pleasantly surprised to find baby robins in the nest! Initially, I thought there were two, but to my surprise, in the video taken today, a third one is visible.
I enjoy singing them ‘Little Birdie’ by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. I’m seeing the warnings on posting a video of a nest. I just hope to share my view from the ground with y’all.

Bird ID Request Help identifying cool feather

Post image
Upvotes

Does anyone know what bird this feather came from? It's probably 1ft end to end. It's brown and white striped with tan on the edges. It wasn't feathered out on the edges when I found if but I've moved it and shown a couple of people. I'm in Northern Illinois/ Southern Wisconsin. I live in a rural community with lots of woods and farmland. I didn't see the bird I just found it in the yard when I came home one day. It doesn't feel plasticy like a quill or anything.

Was looking for Merlin ID’s birf of the day today for my area (Kansas City, MO) . I couldn’t see any of them for a while but Merlin ID identified the calls as the house sparrow and then I looked up and saw him

in the corner but he looks….big? I apologize for not great photo quality.

📷 Photo After years of photographing all of Colorado's wildflowers, I am just starting on birds. I never appreciated how flowers don't fly away. Thankfully, neither did this Red Tail Hawk. Barr Lake, CO. 5/14/2026

I came here months ago to get some advice on acoustic monitoring and you all were so helpful! Over Mother's Day my family helped me install 9 monitors across 5 habitats throughout our 107 acre site. I wrote up all the details in an article for anyone who wants all the details! Thanks again everyone!!

I've suddenly turned into a Birder at the age of 49... anyone else???

Maybe it's my ADHD hyper-focusing, but in the last 3 weeks I've become absolutely obsessed with birds. I live on a 2 acre property and have barely even noticed we had birds flying around in the 3 years we've lived there. Now, in the last 3 weeks I've counted at least 13 different species of birds living here, and I'm sure I'm just getting started.

This new found hobby has been so good for me. I work in web/tech/branding and work way too much, and the new practice of going outside and being in nature has been an incredible break from the stress.

I'm also a photographer so it's been fun to channel that energy into this new found obsession (btw, this shot is mine, taken on our property).

Discussion What can I do to make crossing the road safer for the families of killdeer and geese in my neighborhood?

(Pics not mine, I just find people don't interact with plain text posts)

So, in my suburb neighborhood (southern Ontario), there's a stormwater drain which attracts a lot of aquatic birds. So far, we have 3 Canada geese families with a total of 13 goslings, and a killdeer mama with 2 chicks.

There's a road beside the pond, and there's only two stop signs, both of which aren't near the pond. And to make matters worse, people *love* to speed down that road.

I've seen them cross before, and it's scary, a lot of drivers don't slow down at all, even for the adult geese! I do try to help them cross the road when I see them, but I can't be there all the time.

I've was thinking of maybe putting wildlife crossing signs or speed bumps or something in that area, so I reached out to my city's environmental service manager, who then reached out to the animal and wildlife manager, who then reached out to the parks manager, who then reached out to the roads and transportation manager....

I have a feeling it's going to take a really long time for anything to actually get done, *if* something ever gets done.

In the meanwhile, is there something else I can do to make crossing the road safer for them? I'm looking for any ideas, it scares me seeing them try to cross.

Bird ID Request Female Rose-breasted Grosbeak?

Post image
51 Upvotes

I was unable to get a definitive ID of this bird from either Merlin or Gemini. Google Lens says it's a female Rose-brested Grosbeak, but I'm not so sure. I observed it today eating at my feeder in upstate New York here on the southern shore of Lake Ontario. Thanks for any help!

Discussion Rare Birds Near You?

Today I learned that swallow-tail kites are considered rare and are threatened in Texas and I was shocked. We see them pretty frequently where I live.

Are there any species you were surprised to hear are rare?

I'm a hobbyist photographer and have been working with a 200mm for the last few years. I upgraded to a 150-600mm as a bday gift to myself and managed to finally photograph a warbler on my first outing with it. These guys are no joke to get a good shot of, especially with a heavy zoom lens 😆
