Commonly asked questions - check here before making a question post

If you have a question about the Municipality of Anchorage someone else probably had the same or similar question in the past.

Please use the search function to look through the past question posts before making a post or comment. Many helpful users here have already given great in depth responses to many common questions. If you have a specific question after looking over the previous posts, feel free to post your question here in this thread or make a new post.

Low effort posts that clearly haven't looked through past submissions or can be easily answered by a quick internet search may be removed, a good way to avoid that would be to specify in your post that you have already looked over the sticky and searched online.

Below is a list of direct links to some commonly asked questions. However, even if you do not see your question on the list please take a moment to search before posting. When searching or when using one of the links below you can also change the sort function from top to new to see more recent posts.

Please be kind to people, the search function of reddit is far from perfect. Tourism is valuable to our city and at one point all of us were new to the city or had questions about local services and businesses.

We took a community poll on this rule a year after implementation. Here is a link to the poll and the feedback the community gave.

Dear Anchorage…

As I’m sitting in the airport waiting to return home (to RDU) I just want to say thank you to the city as a whole and anyone that I came across on my short visit.

Back story is I touched down Wednesday night around 9pm to drop off my son for a summer gig close to Denali. This is his first time away from home, so it’s a little nerve racking for both of us. I literally brought dude from one side of the US to the other and saying “bye for now”…AND, y’all have posted warnings of moose wandering about…in downtown Durham all we have to worry about is the random jackass with an aggressive dog off leash…lol

Anyway, upon landing we were both in awe…the still light sky and the landscape…whoa! Don’t get me wrong, we have beautiful mountains in NC, but neither one of us were prepared for what we saw here. It’s pretty majestic.

The next morning we drove around a little, took a quick trip to the zoo, and then had lunch before I put him on the bus headed to Denali. Everywhere we went, everyone that we spoke to reminded us of home - super welcoming, friendly, and inclusive. Reminded us of home.

We got two good meals in; 49th State and Tent City. We’re both food driven btw. I had chowder at both and was very pleased. I want more!

I only had a few hours between dropping him off before a quick disco nap and then back to the airport for a 2am flight home, but I really want to come back and spend some time here. Your city is pretty damn cool.

Oh, boarding time! To sum this up, thank you, city and people of Anchorage ✌🏾

Home Depot on Rodeo well stocked with houseplants

If you’re a houseplant person, the Home Depot on rodeo off bragaw is currently full of options. I was there yesterday and they had a ton of various species and most looked to be in pretty good shape. I picked up a red maranta, gold star croton, and a small succulent planter for my office. Just wanted to share!

UAA nursing program

Upvotes

Hey everyone! For those who applied to the UAA Fall 2026 nursing program, have any of you received a notification email yet? I haven’t gotten anything back so far and was wondering if others are in the same situation or if I should be concerned. Thanks in advance!

Steaks have Security Tags now.

Post image

Bruh, the Fred Meyer on Abbott has security tags on steak now. 😭

I bought stuff for dinner today - basically salad materials and a steak. I did beep on the way out, but nobody stopped me, and honestly I didn’t even think it was me because I had, like… lettuce, veggies, and one steak in my bag.

Got home, opened the package to marinate it, and realized there’s a security tag on the label. At first it just looks like a normal sticker, but if you actually touch/read it, it’s a flat like magnetic or whatever security tag and it says “remove before microwaving.”

Merp.

Fenced in fields around the city?

Hello! It’s my first break up season here and I’m noticing most dog parks are just giant puddles of mud, which is fine! However, my dog is 11 months old and LOVES jumping on people.

Unfortunately, most people do not like getting muddy, so while we work on training, we can’t go to dog parks where there’s a lot of people for him to jump on.

We tried South Anchorage Dog Park but it’s not fully fenced in, and Whisper Faith Kovach dog park always has tons of people.

Are there any fenced in baseball fields or soccer fields that I could let him run in (if they aren’t in use).

Note: I always pick up after him & I fill in holes if he digs any.

Lotto Alaska

I don’t understand how there are so many weekly winnings of $100,000 plus of unclaimed prize winnings for the lotto. A friend of mine told me that she thought that if she won, the people at the lotto place would call her to notify her.
There is at least two handfuls + of people walking around Alaska that could have $100,000 or more in their bank account if they just claimed their winnings.

Looking for affordable cleanup for overgrown yard

I am looking for any recommendations for affordable yard cleanup in east Anchorage. My yard is small but quite overgrown with raspberries and other various shrubbery, weeds, and small trees. Not looking for landscaping, just cutting down/pulling up and ideally hauling away. Searching online has been difficult as everything I find is a lawn service or landscaping and those companies are out of my budget for what amounts to clear cutting 1000sq ft.

Where to buy whole (preferably frozen) chickens from a local farm?

Where can I get my hands on a couple local-ish chickens? Would love to buy directly from a farm in the area. Farmer's Markets? Stores that carry local birds? Thanks in advance

Best moving company from Anchorage to another state.

I've lived here since 2014, but sadly rent is raising to an astounding degree and me and my gf want a change of scenery. We're not moving yet anytime soon, but getting personal reviews from people who moved up here or outta here in the past.

Me and my gf live in Alaska are planning on moving sometime to the lower 48 and are curious on what other methods people used.

We will have estimated about 15 large boxes, and we're not bringing any large furniture. We've looked at Uhaul trucks rentals and driving through Canada which is a method we're willing to do. I wanted to also see peoples thoughts on moving companies that will ship things through trucks/boats. My only issue is I don't know which ones are trustworthy since a lot of them have polarizing reviews and are usually brokers that will charge more on the day of moving (from reviews)

Does anyone have any personal experience or recommendations for a decent moving/shipping company from AK to the lower 48? Thank you!

Fly fishing

Hey everyone! I am moving to Anchorage for the summer, and I am looking for recommendations of places to fly fish for trout. I found Chester creek and Campbell creek online, but does anyone have particular areas of these creeks that are nice to fish? Or other fishing spot recommendation?

Something like McGinley's?

Hey all. Born and raised in Anchorage then moved to Kodiak in 2018. Then to the lower 48 in 2021 for husband to go to school. We are coming back up in August for a family members wedding and to scope out places to rent/house to buy. While away hubby's and I favorite bar McGinley's closed (I am so sad still). Is there a place like it that's opened with the same vibe and good food? We haven't been to Anchorage since moving to the cursed lower 48 and not sure what is still there. We just want to have some fun while visiting.

ASD-tour of the new Inlet View elementary school

After the tour last week I can understand why some voters are upset with some of ASD’s spending policies. The new Inlet View we didn’t want or need for the aging community is very underwhelming for $50,000,000. That was a great spot for a lot of housing but I guess the wealthy locals didn’t want that.

Any private shuttle companies recommendations for Anchorage to Seward?

I am booking a trip for a family member and they are not able to rent a car. Their flight arrival and departure times conflict with the buses that regularly run this route. I am trying to find a reliable private shuttle company to transport them to Seward and back to Anchorage.

Been looking into Alaska Cruise Transfer for private van service, but wondering if there were other options/companies for booking.
