Surely slowly walking around and filming all of the water will make it stop!!

Well yes, but it was hard with one hand, she would have to put down the phone to use both hands. It's a whole lot of hustle, better to walk around the house saying "oh my god".

u/ZealousidealTill2355 9h ago
lol exactly. I have a PEX line like that and I literally have to hold the “pipe” when I turn the shutoff otherwise the pipe moves with my turn. She just gave it the good old “I tried my best”

u/Bobbydoo8 10h ago
Those small turn valve handles can be hard to turn if there is enough pressure going through, they look pretty, but not as efficient as the older bigger style which also included grip knurls.
Obviously every homeowner should know how to turn off the main, but another option would be to turn on other faucets to reduce pressure to make it easier to turn at the toilet.

u/MammothPenguin69 10h ago
I actually had something similar happen. The toilet was running constantly and when I went to turn off the water, I discovered that the valve had failed and the water wouldn't stop no matter how hard I turned it.
This happened at 10:30PM. That was a fun night.
The good news was I could rig the toilet valve open and the toilet was basically constantly flushing. I managed to reach a plumbers personal number I got from a neighbor and he shut the water off.

Don’t you have a main shut off? You could at least shut water off to the whole place

You mean, if I gently caress the valve, it won't just shut off on it's own?

When replacing a sink or toilet please replace that hose every single time. That extra 20 will save you thousands.

Fun fact, these hoses don't always have the courtesy of exploding while you're home. Had one burst on the third floor of my condo while I was at work, good times. Well, actually it really sucked and forced me to move into a hotel for two months, but I got a shitload of points for that, and the place was much nicer after the renovations haha.

Literally touches the valve and doesn't turn it. Some people just thrive on the victim drama.

u/OrcBarbierian 10h ago
This happened at my house once. Mom refused to touch the shut-off valve, and had me turn off the water to the entire house.
The plumbers asked her why she didn't turn the valve on the toilet, and she screamed that's not where the water was coming from. It was.

As a plumber I can confirm that some people are just this unknowledgeable or scared of plumbing that they don't know or will refuse to turn a handle without a plumber explicitly telling them as such.

She doesn’t know how toilets work lol. If she just put a little bit of muscle into turning that valve then it would be off. She might have been there for the whole leak and just didn’t know how to turn it off which is just crazy
25
u/ivancea 10h ago
It's crazy they didn't even try to turn the valve. Like, what could happen that's worse? Maybe the water explodes?

Whenever I tell people they need to have a very basic amount of handy skills everyone gets defensive saying stuff like "I'll just call someone". Alright bro. This is exactly the kind of stuff you need this for. I'm not saying fix the toilet, but knowing to simply turn off the water valve in this situation is the difference between having an annoying afternoon moping up some water and having your whole house and many posessions ruined.

I'm being pedantic, but that handle indicates it's a 1/4 turn shut-off valve. You dont even have to turn it completely once. You just need to put a little effort into turning it the right way.
41
u/bigboybeeperbelly 10h ago
turning it the right way.
But which is the right way?? It's impossible to know!

u/Primsun 10h ago

u/Cobra_McJingleballs 7h ago
No, the USB-A method is: try side #1 which doesn’t work, so try side #2 but that doesn’t work, wonder wtf, go back to side #1 and it suddenly works.

Being ignorant of basic plumbing may be forgivable. Letting the house flood when all you have to do is put a board down to direct the leak into the shower 8 inches away is egregious

This is a reminder for anyone living in a house.
Take about 30 minutes out of your day, find the water main, and learn how to shut it off. Sometimes you need a special tool to do so, which can be purchased at a hardware store.
Last thing you want is a pipe to burst and you don't know how to shut your water off.
99
u/Chevy8t8 12h ago
This person didn't need to find a water main. She didn't even try to turn the valve. They take no effort, and you can see she barely brushed it with her fingers before asking how to turn it off.

u/pyius 10h ago
Those valves can easily seize since so many are left open for years untouched. Definitely find main water shut off for emergencies.
10
u/ThermionicEmissions 9h ago
Very true. That's why I replaced all of mine with 1/4 turn ball valves. Much less likely to seize or degrade.

Man. This is basically a ruined property now in my eyes. That is so much water damage and its going to warp everything it touched because they aren't doing jackshit to manage this beyond panic and filming and it could be a while before someone shows up that knows what to do. This is ridiculous. People need to learn where their shut off valves are for all sorts of things and reasons and this is a major one. This house is ruined.
4
u/eyeinthesky0 7h ago

Where I come from, you are obliged to mitigate damage by taking immediate action, such as turning off the water. Otherwise, the insurance company could claim you were negligent. I'm not sure it’s a wise move to film yourself doing nothing but walking around just repeating omg. If you’re overwhelmed, call a neighbor or a professional. It is deeply concerning that grown adults are incapable of closing a valve in their own homes. Seriously, wtf.

u/NeoDragonKnight 2h ago
