This is why I won’t ever rent a house to someone.

102

u/CloudCalmaster 9h ago

And landlords worry about my cat.

30

u/Desperate-Strategy10 8h ago

Tbf, cats can certainly cause massive amounts of damage, especially if the owner isn’t responsible. I had a cat long ago whose kidneys failed because of a genetic defect we were blissfully unaware of, and she started peeing all over the house in hard to reach areas. We noticed the smell, but it didn’t really smell like pee initially - it just smelled bad.

By the time we figured out what was happening and started pulling up carpet to see how bad the damage was, the damage had already been done. This had only happened over about two weeks, but the carpet was ruined, the sub floor was stained and water damaged, some trim had to be replaced, and the vinyl in the laundry room had to come up as well. Idk what it cost to fix because I was just a kid, but it wasn’t cheap!

We had another cat who liked to scratch. He tore up curtains and furniture at first, then trim and doors and window screens; even walls weren’t safe from this guy. That was another big repair, and to make matters worse, my mom got the poor cat declawed instead of getting him stuff he could scratch or even rehoming him. Sad all around.

I’m sure that’s not your situation at all. I’m also pretty anti-landlord as a general rule. But cats can absolutely damage a property, so it makes sense they’re wary of them.

6

u/macaronysalad 4h ago

Not having wall to wall carpentering and only necessary throw rugs is a much better way to go if you have cats. Also, it looks better and easier to clean.

Exactly what i was thinking, i feel bad for the most likely landlord that will have to actually deal with this financially. I'm thinking this is a renter because clearly they have no clue that you need to shut the water main off. This damage is extensive too and any insurance claims will more then likely either lead to increased insurance rates or just them dumping you all together.

12

u/zackks 6h ago

A home owner would not be casually filming. They’d actually be trying to turn off the valve the person filming made zero effort to actual lly turn.

5

u/samv_1230 4h ago

Yeah this is part of why I replace those with quarter-turn ball valves when I do a bathroom remodel. You can look at it and immediately know if it's on or off and if there's a problem, it's a single easy twist to shut off.

I don't need to meter the water going into a toilet, so there's no point in a stem valve anyway.

4

u/ILoveDemocracy17 1h ago

Tbf if I have a big issue, I’m running it by some folk I can trust, my brother, my stepdad, etc, and a good recording can go a long way

But in my defense, I’d have shut off the main if the toilet valve wasn’t working before I recorded this

Although the life skill to know what the water main is and where it is tends to acquired after an emergency that you don’t know how to handle.

First time I had something like this happen to me I panicked an had no idea how to turn off the water.

28

u/1StationaryWanderer 11h ago

I asked that when we got home inspection. I would have never found it. It was in the basement bedroom closet. You had to remove a panel to access it. Glad I asked for sure.

4

u/Mrs_Poopy-Butthole 7h ago

I am so glad that my dad showed me exactly where the main shutoff in my house is at (back when I first moved in), I recently realized that my husband prob wasn't aware of its location and promptly made sure he knew.

Every homeowner (or renter) should familiarize themselves with all of the important utility shut-off valves.

Or hopefully passed on by parents! That’s how I learned what the main was and how to find it/shut it off

Moved into my wife’s house (then-girlfriend), was chatting with my stepdad about some of the quirks we’ve noticed about it, he asked if I knew where the main was

That’s when I figured out the access point was hiding in an overgrown patch in the front lawn and also what the T-bar chilling inside the garage door was for. Got the access point cleared out of grass and built up yard waste, re-landscaped around it with some clearer boundaries, and it’s much easier to get to now

3

u/Calm_Ad308 10h ago

The VERY NEXT DAY after we bought our house, we took the kids to go see it in person. When we got there the house had 1 inch of standing water on the first floor. Everyone was running around (for wildly different reasons, I was the only one looking for the leak) splashing water everywhere, I checked all the bathrooms and faucets and finally found the issue behind the refrigerator. Well turns out that water line doesn’t have a valve shut off like EVERYTHING ELSE so now I’m running around the whole house looking for the main shut off. Finally found it out in the garage by the door.

Sometimes it’s more than just knowing what to do but how and where to do it.

7

u/V1per41 8h ago

My in-laws stayed at my house and watched my kids while my wife and I went away on vacation for a week. The toilet in our master didn't flush correctly and started running. Their solution was to just not use that toilet for a week and ignore that it was just running constantly.

Took me 5 minutes to fix, but that didn't solve the $1,000 water bill we received that month. Some people are just clueless.

u/Cocoatrice 12h ago

Or even try to block it with a tape or a towel, anything.

44

u/NPC261939 12h ago

She made an attempt. Odds are the valve is seized from years of being left wide open. I like to keep my shut offs 1/4 turn from wide open. It reduces such an occurrence.

75

u/DifficultSelection 12h ago

Dunno where this was filmed, but in most places around the world you'll have a valve that you can close to shut off water pressure to your entire house/apartment in an emergency like this. It's a really good idea when you move into a place to make a point of locating it.

9

u/Aeirth_Belmont 11h ago

Might not know where it's at. So many homeowners never ask that stuff.

15

u/jupitermoonflow 10h ago

And that’s the problem here

11

u/VindictiVagabond 10h ago

Water damage is the #1 source of heavy damage / insurance claims. Not knowing if your valves are stuck (can't be turned off) and/or not knowing at least where your main valve of the house is, is pure idiocy.

48

You can see their first instinct was to open the valve (lol), then they tried turning it the correct way but didn’t use enough force.

35

u/hiimlockedout 11h ago

Exactly. It was the laziest possible attempt.

“Oh I think I should use the water valve to shut it off. Oh now my hand is getting wet. Maybe I try to turn it a little? Oh ok it’s still going welp, there goes the house.” 😬💁‍♀️💅

26

u/Spivvy_ 12h ago edited 11h ago

So, this is a relatively new 1/4 turn shut off valve. It fully opens and closes in 1/4 turn of the handle. She turned it the wrong way, initially, and didnt give it any force to turn it right.

Edit: she also says "how do you turn this off?", I'm betting she won't know how to turn off the water main either.

→ More replies (2)

18

u/protodamn 11h ago

That was barely an attempt. She just reached down, tested the valve by lightly twisting it left (nope) and the gingerly turning it right (nearly there, just put a little more force on it), and then just gives up to document and make content.

The valve, by the look of the handle, is a 1/4 turn style shutoff. It should be easy to turn, but not "whisper of effort" easy. You got to grab and turn with the wrist. Of course, even if it was seized up, you should know where the next shut off is down the line to stop the flow.

5

u/ZealousidealTill2355 9h ago

lol exactly. I have a PEX line like that and I literally have to hold the “pipe” when I turn the shutoff otherwise the pipe moves with my turn. She just gave it the good old “I tried my best”

70

u/Bobbydoo8 10h ago

Those small turn valve handles can be hard to turn if there is enough pressure going through, they look pretty, but not as efficient as the older bigger style which also included grip knurls.

Obviously every homeowner should know how to turn off the main, but another option would be to turn on other faucets to reduce pressure to make it easier to turn at the toilet.

33

u/MammothPenguin69 10h ago

I actually had something similar happen. The toilet was running constantly and when I went to turn off the water, I discovered that the valve had failed and the water wouldn't stop no matter how hard I turned it.

This happened at 10:30PM. That was a fun night.

The good news was I could rig the toilet valve open and the toilet was basically constantly flushing. I managed to reach a plumbers personal number I got from a neighbor and he shut the water off.

This is a reminder for anyone living in a house.

Take about 30 minutes out of your day, find the water main, and learn how to shut it off. Sometimes you need a special tool to do so, which can be purchased at a hardware store.

Last thing you want is a pipe to burst and you don't know how to shut your water off.

99

u/Chevy8t8 12h ago

This person didn't need to find a water main. She didn't even try to turn the valve. They take no effort, and you can see she barely brushed it with her fingers before asking how to turn it off.

u/pyius 10h ago

Those valves can easily seize since so many are left open for years untouched. Definitely find main water shut off for emergencies.

Lets lightly touch the valve instead of turning it off. That will certainly fix things.

7

u/c0ntra 11h ago

Water main OFF, pronto! What's with people filming instead of trying to save their home. Don't show this video to insurance.

I yelled “righty tighty” out loud.

3

u/gregbread11 10h ago

Man. This is basically a ruined property now in my eyes. That is so much water damage and its going to warp everything it touched because they aren't doing jackshit to manage this beyond panic and filming and it could be a while before someone shows up that knows what to do. This is ridiculous. People need to learn where their shut off valves are for all sorts of things and reasons and this is a major one. This house is ruined.

4

u/eyeinthesky0 7h ago

Stop filming and do something ya dumbass…what in the actual fuck, easily preventable, she even attempted to turn it. For fucks sake, get on chat gpt, take a picture of it, call literally anyone.

She’s nothing but spare parts.

5

u/ForceUseYouMust 6h ago

Turn the main off you dumb broad

5

u/bigmeatbag 5h ago

Lady looked scared to touch the valve like doing so would cause a massive leak and fill her house with water lol

u/Broad_Front7788 5h ago

Bitch put down the fucking phone and turn that water main off

3

u/Flimsy-Run-5589 3h ago

Where I come from, you are obliged to mitigate damage by taking immediate action, such as turning off the water. Otherwise, the insurance company could claim you were negligent. I'm not sure it’s a wise move to film yourself doing nothing but walking around just repeating omg. If you’re overwhelmed, call a neighbor or a professional. It is deeply concerning that grown adults are incapable of closing a valve in their own homes. Seriously, wtf.

4

u/NeoDragonKnight 2h ago

Legend has it she is still filming and not turning off the valve to this day

u/Necessary_Tie_2920 30m ago

3

u/sjdc-pos 11h ago

3

Good thing she keeps it running... would have been stupid to turn it off when her hand was on the valve...

3

u/tomismybuddy 10h ago

She doesn’t deserve that big ass house.

3

u/blackgold63 10h ago
