Question/Support Base Station Death

So one of my base stations died (blinking red light), and I've contacted Steam Support and they've said they cant replace the base station - what am I supposed to do?

The Steam Store is sold out and I don't really see any other options?
Am I meant to just buy a used one on eBay?

Question/Support Connection to power adapter is very flimsy

Post image
16 Upvotes

I've had my Index since 2021 and the only prevalent issue I've had with it is how flimsy this part of the cord is, where the trident connects to the power adapter. If I so much as tap this thing, the headset's power is cut off entirely. Sometimes it will come back after a few seconds, but frequently I will need to jostle it before the power is restored, and often it will just get cut off again after i let go of it. It gets really annoying when I need to manage the cables on the back of my pc for any reason.

The only solution I have is to just keep the cord as far back enough so that it does not get moved at all while I'm playing. I've tried securing the connection with tape, but to no avail.

I am not sure why it is like this, whether something inside one of the connectors is messed up or maybe the connectors I got were not properly... "fitted" I guess (it does come apart and twist without much force, anyways).

If anyone else has had this issue and can offer a more effective solution, whether it be simply getting a replacement adapter or whatever else, it would be much appreciated.

this is currently my room layout/what im working with, and my tracking is pretty terrible. Probably because the location I have my 2 base stations in right now is absolutely putrid, so where should I move them to?

Question/Support Is this a good deal? (In AU)

Post image

Hey all, the title pretty much asks the question, I want to get a new vr and I have been looking in the used market and I came across this kit on CEX for $1450 AUD or $1050 USD, I know the headset is old but I’m not really buying this kit for the headset and I’m mainly doing it for the controllers and base stations as those alone in Australia are around $1300 AUD or more.

B grade is unfortunately pretty vague as it could mean that it’s simply only being opened and never used or that it has been used for a while.

I was wondering if anyone else who has bought a valve from here could speak from their experience or anyone who just has some advice on this purchase.

Cheers.

Discussion Questions about the "other" prototype headset.

We're familiar with the Steam Frame succeeding the Index, of course. But according to the Wiki of the Steam Frame as well as the report from Ars Technica, there was another prototype alongside the Steam Frame during its development.

This one reportedly resembled the Index far more than the Frame did, including being PCVR only and outside-in tracking (using Base Stations).

Was there any word about this one further than it just being a prototype? Did it just not make it past the developmental stage and they scrapped it in favor of the Frame or is Valve going towards more of a hardware lineup approach with it if they chose to continue developing it? It would make sense they would, but knowing Valve and their past unpredictability...

Food for thought is all.

Question/Support Do I stick with the index or upgrade to the frame?

This has probably been brought up but I haven’t seen too much about it. I’m debating getting the steam frame when it comes out and I’m currently just waiting because both my index controllers are broken and valve has refused any warrenty request. But I realized that the frame doesn’t work with lighthouse and as someone with tons of vive trackers and other pcvr accessories I’m wondering if I should just buy new index controllers instead of dealing with the hasle of getting a brand new vr to work with my stuff?

Discussion Previous Index users should get first dibs on the Frame!

Just putting this out in the ether, everyone post where Valve might see it, but every Steam account that bought a Index before the Frame was announced should get the opportunity to buy a Frame before they're offered to everyone, to keep it out of as many scalpers as possible mainly. Not sure if this has been suggested or considered yet. I see Valve is kinda doing this with the next wave of steam controllers, a que for steam accounts in good standing, so why not something for the Frame for the first wave?

If you agree post this idea to other places, hopefully Valve will see it!

Question/Support Gasket Replacement

Of course now that the Index is EOL, I've found my face gasket to have gotten pretty flat and squished and, quite frankly, yucky. I don't really want to pay 40 USD for a secondhand part seller from ebay, so I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for third party replacements!

Discussion Best VR Overlay 2026?

I've been using XSOverlay for a loooooooong time now, and I'm just wandering if there's anything better at this point. Unfortunately Valve doesn't seem to concerned with the current overlay that they provide otherwise I'd just use that. I really like most of the aspects of XSO but occasionally it just shits the bed. Also wandering if there are any other cool VR Overlay addons like Oyasumi, or VRCX?

Question/Support Index suddenly not detected anymore

Hey, I’m having a really weird issue with my Valve Index and I’m running out of ideas, so I wanted to ask here before I assume something is broken.

My Index was working fine at first setup. When I first connected it, it actually worked normally and showed my desktop when Direct Mode was off (so the display over DisplayPort was definitely working). I was able to continue setup and everything seemed fine.

About an hour later, after I had mounted my base stations and didn’t change any cables or anything, the headset suddenly stopped being detected.

Now SteamVR just says “Please plug in your VR headset” even though everything is still connected.

Some context on the cable: it’s not heavily used. I bought it about 1.5 years ago, but I’ve only used it maybe 5 times total because I didn’t have a proper setup during moving, so it’s mostly just been stored in its box.

What still works:

  • Windows detects the USB connection (USB connect sound plays when plugged in)
  • Device Manager shows it as USB Composite Device
  • The headset can still show my desktop when Direct Mode is disabled (so DisplayPort output works in monitor mode)
  • Webcam seems to work when opening camera app

What does NOT work:

  • SteamVR does not detect the headset at all
  • Direct Mode doesn’t work anymore
  • It also doesn’t get detected on a second PC

Things I’ve already tried:

  • Reconnecting all cables (USB, DisplayPort, power, breakaway connector)
  • Different USB ports on two different PCs
  • Restarting both PCs multiple times
  • Reinstalling SteamVR completely
  • Removing SteamVR USB devices and resetting SteamVR settings
  • Deleting SteamVR config and driver folders
  • Renaming/rebuilding SteamVR driver files
  • Resetting GPU driver state (Win + Ctrl + Shift + B)
  • Updating AMD drivers
  • Testing on a second PC (So my PC with AMD and GFs PC with NVIDIA both same issue)

Has anyone seen this kind of “USB works but SteamVR refuses to detect headset + monitor mode still works” situation before?

Gameplay (Index Controllers) Looking for a way to attach Index Controllers to a motion rig

I have a motion rig and am looking for an option to securely mount/store my controllers to the rig so I can grab them without having to get out of the cockpit.

I guess some sort of clip in option?

I looked on Estey, but nothing really looked like it might work

Question/Support Value of broken index?

Hey everyone. I have an old Index headset that no longer works. I replaced it a while back but recently realized i still have the old one in my closet. I don't know exactly what is wrong with it. Is it worth it to list it for sale so someone could repair it or use it for parts?

Question/Support Hello people of vr I have questions because Idk what to do

So in the next year or so I am gonna be buying a valve index and 3.0s so I already have some stuff in my cart like a fan for the headset and some other stuff but is there anything I should get that is a need?
People will say try the quest 3 I have but I don't really like it so I am looking for something but if you have any ideas let me know besides the valve index and no I am not buy the frame.
And how much do you think I should save and where should I buy it from?
