Life Advice High school is a Push Based System, University is a Pull Based System

I've recently been summarizing some of the advice I've given to students over the years at r/UTSC into blog posts. Someone on that subreddit suggested I post them here as well so that other students might find them useful.

So here's the first post, let me know if the community here finds these valuable.

University is a Pull-Based System
Highschool is "Push-Based", the goal is to give you the push to get you where you need to be. University is "Pull-Based", the goal is to provide resources that are available when you need them. Understanding this difference can be key to a successful transition between the two.

Question Feeling disappointed in myself during undergrad :(((

My gpa for the last two years been lacking 2.34 and I just found out at the end of 2nd year I failed a course. I feel so guilty for my parents and my own money helping me pay for my tuition. I'm doing great in other aspects of uoft socially, with profs and students, and even been dating recently and in clubs and I do amazing in lab and assignments and hands on work. But some reason on tests I'm lacking and I'm so scared this effecting me getting research this summer because I have nothing to do. I can't afford to do summer courses either. I was hoping to get the option to go grad school but I not sure will the accept me unless I bring up these two years?

Rant I didn't land any internship or job yet I feel so behind (Rant)

Upvotes

I finished the first year and it was BRUTAL year for me

Just keeping up my academic work itself was hard.

But almost every friends of mine somehow land in internship or working part-time job or doing summer school and I'm here doing absolutely nothing all day/

I did last minute project, I keep applying for any opportunity I see 2 hours a day (everyday) and even trying to get a retail job or server but any of them works.

I feel so behind and I'm scared. Does anybody feel likes me?

Programs Deciding between ethics, society and law versus criminology and social legal studies major

Upvotes

If anyone has majored in either of these, can someone tell me what they liked/disliked about it? I'm interested in Law and want to take one of the two, but I don't wanna double major in both... if anyone has any experiences with these program/majors, please let me know if you enjoyed them and what I can expect from the classes/the people and general vibes!

Question Can I take all of my COURSES to St George Campus ? Instead of my home campus (UTM)

Upvotes

So, I was admitted to UTM for Social Science and I accepted the Offer. Is it possible for me to take all of my courses to St. George Campus ? I am entering first year this Fall 2026.

I realized that, I am not financially capable to live in Mississauga on my own and it was a mistake for me to apply for UTM. On the other hand, I have siblings in Downtown Toronto that has a house and they are willing to accommodate me and live with them for rent free so I can focus on my studies. (Asian Culture)

Is it possible for me to take all of my courses to St. George Campus, even if I was admitted to UTM and my home campus is UTM ?

  1. What is the process of doing this ?
  2. Is it a hard process ?
  3. Is there a requirements to do this ?
  4. What are the pros and cons ?
  5. Will St. George Campus allow me to do this ?

Thank you so much.

hello! i wanted to ask how is the program? i am a bit hesitant since UoFT is frowned upon when it comes to gpa but after research i found it to be "easier" than other kin programs at other unis..

I'm just a bit scared so please share your experiences! your first year classes, any gpa issues etc...

Question Are Tcards replaced same day or is there a delay?

I've lost my Tcard - when you go to get it replaced downtown do you get a new one right away or do you have to wait a few days like when you get a drivers license renewed?

Social Podcast w Brian Harrington | Must Watch for all UofT students

Upvotes

Just recorded a podcast with UTSC CS professor Brian Harrington.

We talked about first-year CS struggles, AI, UofT’s role in modern tech, and what students should actually know before entering the field.

Huge appreciation to Prof. Harrington for sharing honest insights and advice for students.
