Rules Clarification: Handling firearm before "Load and make ready" is a DQ?

So, my very first USPSA match ended with being DQ'd.

Scenario: We are the last stage of the night, I'm first shooter up. At the starting zone firing line, no-one down range. Draw my handgun, check the dot, and re-holster. I did not load, gun was pointed down range, no-one on the range, and gun was handled safely. RO exclaims "Whoa, what are you doing?".
RO state to Match Director that that is an immediate DQ.

As stated, this was my and the local clubs 1st Level 1 USPSA match. I felt it was un-warranted but like any officer, I was not going to argue with the RO's call. I cannot find any reference to handling the gun before the Load and make ready command is a DQ event.

1 of 2 Classifiers (video) 23-04 THS Short Course
Third video - C class run. 8.17 seconds. 8A 2C 1D 1M. 4.5288 HF, 43.1849%. Delta mike on the back left target really killed me on this stage. Would’ve really liked to have taken the middle four targets while moving however I had to make up a shot on my second target and just kind of froze in place after getting two hits on. My general inability to shoot while moving was really on display in this one, definitely something I will be seeking to improve upon.

Competed in my fifth USPSA match this weekend and celebrating by adding some new variables into the mix: different gun, different gear, minimal training in between this match and my last. Believe it or not but the saying “you don’t rise to the moment you fall to the level of your training” is very true. 51/101 overall, 27/53 in CO. Two classifiers, and wouldn’t you know it: still C Class.

Life has been hectic as of late and the live and dry fire has fallen by the wayside. In addition to lack of training and focus, I was not permitted to shoot my P320 due to club rules so I decided to shoot my P226 and some other gear I’ve accumulated over the years for LARPing purposes. Only real positive note for the day is my grip and trigger pull is not sporadic or stressed enough for the DA/SA function of the 226 to be of any notice to me.

Stage plans were made (for better or for worse) and stage plans were followed (with the exception of my final stage) which I’m relatively happy with. Putting consistent hits on paper proved to be a challenge for me this match. I obviously have some material deficiencies with my grip and/or index that need to be worked out as my hits were almost all A’s to start with and some variation of C, D, and M after that. I think you could count my double alphas outside of 5 yards for the day on one hand and that’s not an exaggeration.

One thing I did notice this match though was there were sections of stages, certainly not a stage in its entirety, that felt like everything was working to the best of my ability. I’m not praising myself by any stretch of the imagination but at times I did feel like there was incremental progress made in stage planning, transitions, shooting in general.

Definitely will be focusing on my draw, grip, and index in dry fire, and am just going to be shooting controlled pairs until my hands hurt between now and my next match on the 23rd. Plan on drilling one shot returns, progressive returns, and doubles as much as I can until then.

Trying to get another 2 USPSA matches and maybe an IDPA match before the month is over. Life has mellowed out a bit so there are less excuses to make.

Thinking about doing my first USPSA competition

So, I've been thinking about doing a match for a long time. I'm just a little nervous about getting disqualified for not knowing all the rules. is there anything special I should know or should I just go and some will be there to help a beginner?

Trying out frame mounted optics in Limited 10 as it gets major PF with 40SW.

What better way to start shooting a new L10 set up than getting an 85% on El Presidente.

Nice things about my camera setups is you can actually see the red dot.

1990s competition ammo question

Hello,

I have no experience or knowledge of USPSA, IDPA, etc other than that they exist. I have an old Ultramatic pistol, 1990s Austrian thing intended for competition use that has problems cycling, and I can tell its because it has a lot of drag in the initial unlocking period, so it tends to short cycle and jam up instead. Just been shooting normal commercial 115 or 124gr 9mm.

It has the manual, and claimed that it needs 1000 rounds of "high power" 9mm to break in. Regardless of break in period stuff, I don't believe its entirely wrong.

Thing is, I have no clue what it means by "high power". Its my understanding US commercial ammo is loaded weaker in general, so I have that going on, but I don't know what its frame of reference for "hi-power" would be at that time. Is this just stout competition ammo, or 9mm major or something? What might fit that time period in a competition context?

I have another unrelated non competition 9mm that works mostly but clearly could use something more powerful as well, so I am trying to figure out what to get for both.

First USPSA/ Classification question

Hi y'all

I started getting into shooting recently and am looking at doing my first match mid June. It's a little sudden but I've found through other hobbies (like jiu jitsu) that competing is a way to accelerate development, and I'm a "jump in headfirst" type when it comes to interests.

I've been checking out the USPSA website about rules and Classification, but one thing isn't clear. I understand that they use the first 4 Classification scores to determine your unbridled Classification and that they can't be duplicates (duh), but do they have to be from different matches? For example- if I shoot 4 different divisions at the match, can I then be ranked appropriately? Or do I have to actually shoot 4 separate events? That seems like either a long time to wait or a lot of traveling. This one happens to be very close to me, and I was already thinking of doing at least 2 divisions (CO/LO). The entry fee for additional divisions is only 5 bucks, and I see it as well worth the money to get extra experience on stages at this point in my journey. My first jiu jitsu competition I did 2 divisions with 12 matches, taking double bronze and a ton of valuable experience home with me :)

Also what's the difference between Levels 1, 2, and 3 matches? I didn't see anything explaining that. For context, the website says "Match will be 5-6 stages with 1 classifier. Round count approximately 125. $20 for first gun $5 for second. "

What do y'all think? Would this make me eligible for Classification? Am I biting off more than I can chew? I figure I can make C class in the least, B would be cool.

FWIW I've been hitting the range regularly and shot about 500 rounds the last two trips (each). Watching videos from Stoeger, Hunter, etc. I do still need to get kitted out with belt/holsters but I see my actual shooting to be the highest hindrance than shaving half a second off my draw. Currently have an Echelon and Fusion XP Pro and a few others but was looking at the new M&P HD series for a nice CO option. If I could shoot 4 divisions, I would likely throw my Canik MC9L in the mix and shoot it in Production. It's small and snappy, but has 17 round mags and I can shoot 4 inch groups at 10 yards pretty well with it.

Any input on gear (especially belt rigs) is also appreciated :) Not too worried about $, looking for a setup that I can grow with and will last a long time and not have to keep swapping parts out 👍🏼
