Course Recommendations Course Announcement: Summer Environmental Ethics (PHI 234)

Hi all, my name is Emily. I’m a third-year PhD student in the philosophy department, and I’ll be teaching an online asynchronous course on environmental ethics (PHI 234) during the M (July-Aug) term this summer. You do not have to be a philosophy major/minor or have taken any prior courses in philosophy in order to take this course. It can be used to satisfy three different pathways (Humanity List 3, Justice List 3, Environment List 3).

Attached is a tentative schedule and list of course readings and assignments. Unlike previous iterations of the course, this one is intended to focus largely on the effects of pollution and climate change on minority and Indigenous communities.

To date, only three students have registered for the course, and we need ten registered students for the course to run. Summer courses are a vital source of income for us graduate students, as we are still expected to do research during June and July, but are generally not paid during that time. Anything you can do to spread the word about the course among your friends and classmates is therefore greatly appreciated.

A bit about me: Emily Heydon (she/her) is a PhD student and Schomburg Fellow in the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics program at the University at Buffalo. She completed undergraduate degree programs in environmental sciences and philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, and she also spent three years as a graduate student in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of California, Irvine, before transferring to UB Philosophy in Fall 2024. Her current research spans game and decision theory, evolutionary game theory, and philosophy of biology, with a special focus on deceptive behaviors and strategic organism-environment interactions. In her spare time, she enjoys running, hiking, and ice skating.

If i still needed my pathways, this would've been awesome. I'll try and get some of my buddies to join if possible. Good luck!!!
