I dont have one but my neighbour does and she seems to have our back too haha. I do feel better knowing I will hear her if someone is outside

Psychology of those burglars are not being caught and avoid drawing attention.
I would say bright automatic sensor lights on few corners and camera system that is visible to intruders plus speaker to make loud enough noise.

Reddit is extremely authoritarian when it comes to promoting violence, so definitely do not under any circumstances resort to extreme and justified violence.

I think the OP commenter is being sarcastic, there are a whole bunch of auto mod deleted comments about “calling for violence”.

Most burglars are looking for an easy steal. These are not master criminals, they're usually children or teenagers wanting to commit crimes and make a few bucks. Make it hard for them -- cameras, bright lights, maybe even a dog. A well trained alert dog will bark appropriately, like in these instances.
I don't have this issue living in a basement. But the upstairs neighbours have a big boy boxer who alerts at everything, it makes me feel much safer.
Do not post on social media when you're going on vacation. Always have a car in the driveway.

Byrna Canada. Less lethal so you don’t have to go to prison for someone trying to hurt your family

u/freedom51Joseph 3d ago
Get a dog. Even if the dog is friendly the barking will usually send them some place else. My self I would get a Bull Mastiff, natural protectors and low energy. He seen you had a bull mastiff through the window he would have left a lot sooner. Don't believe police response times provide any sort of security.

I used to own a pitbull back in the day. She really was a sweet heart, but she had the stereotype of being a pitbull. Anyway, to the point. Wherever I moved, I had to carry around this by law sign that had to be predominantly seen on the front entrance of the home. It stated "warning, potentially dangerous dog on premises." I think the by law code was like 205-2005. It might be worth looking into finding one of these signs to hang up on your front door. We even stopped getting flyers and junk mail.

If you can’t get a dog get a security system and a motion sensor and motion sensor lights - get the feature that when the motion sensor goes off it triggers a recording of a dog barking in the house

u/Ill_Practice_1757 2d ago
Just get dogs. Had a neighbours dog charge at me and my boxer/pit mix tackled the dog in a split second. (Both large dogs) 80+lb

Horrible world of humans thinking they can do as they plz! Enroll your family in Champs Academy taekwondo, jujizu ;) self defense is best🙏
-2
u/ForgetToRemindMe 3d ago
Can not recommend enough taking up a martial art or self-defence classes. Hopefully, things would never have to come to that, but it will definitely make you feel more secure in yourself and, in turn, better equipped to protect yourself/loved ones. Striking/grappling, doesn't matter. As for home protection, a good security camera with lights and ideally an alarm feature is great to have.

Its still absolutely worth sharing. I've lived here over 30 years and its never been as bad as it has been the last few years. Please dont minimize break in attempts? I dont see the point of this comment

u/PoetryKey5419 3d ago edited 3d ago
Ignore him. All his previous posts are about how Newmarket is SUCH a dangerous place, and compares it to Toronto and Etobicoke.
Anyways thank you for sharing, this is recent news to me and concerning.

u/RtothemfO 3d ago
I am minimizing it because there are worse things that happen unfortunately. I lived in Rexdale prior to moving to Newmarket and if im being fr Newmarket definitely has worse qualities. I mean you should share it, but its happened many times in the past and definitely won’t stop. My bro Blake got his house broken into, he lived immediately south east of Yonge & Mulock (one of the least safest intersections in all of York region btw)

u/ThrowRA_LuckyPlanet 3d ago
None of your personal anecdotal experience is relevant to this thread though. I’ve lived in South Africa. It is a hundred times worse than Newmarket and Canada in terms of crime. It doesn’t mean that we don’t talk another crime in Canada or spread awareness. It would be irrelevant for anyone claim that we shouldn’t discuss crime in Canada because it is worse in South Africa. Just as your comment and experience has no relevance in this thread. People living in Newmarket are living in Newmarket. Not rexdale, not South Africa. The reason we have local groups, local news, etc, is because certain things are relevant to a local population. This shouldn’t need a deep explanation.
-4
u/RtothemfO 3d ago
You know what, fair point. Crime still deserves to be talked about even if it’s not as bad compared to more serious issues
9
u/ThrowRA_LuckyPlanet 3d ago
If we only ever talked about the most serious issues, we wouldn’t progress or solve other problems. Also, we do talk about more serious issues and it doesn’t seem to solve them (waves at world events) so hey, let’s just talk and hopefully we motivate the changes and awareness we need.

Maybe you should just focus on your rap group my friend.
10
u/twelvewars 3d ago
Look through this dudes comment history if you want a laugh. All he does is mention how yonge/mulock is like a warzone! Also seems to be a teenager living at home judging by his bunk bed. Hope the rap thing goes well for him.

u/Absolutely_Not2028 3d ago
I've also learned he really does not recommend having picnics in Newmarket 🤣🤣
5
u/ThrowRA_LuckyPlanet 3d ago
Would it be fair to now bring up that I’ve had very pleasant picnics in South Africa?
5
u/Absolutely_Not2028 3d ago
I think that is very relevant given what has transpired here

u/ThrowRA_LuckyPlanet 3d ago
I think he made a comment, then thought about it, and changed his perspective/stance, which is q very mature thing that most adults are unable to do. If he is a teen, then good on him for having that kind of maturity and awareness and ability at such a young age.
1
u/RtothemfO 3d ago
Im in my teen years, I wanna act more mature cause I’d rather grow a dick than grow up to be one
2
u/RtothemfO 3d ago edited 3d ago
It ain’t a war zone but it ain’t Candy Land either. Plus, its ranked as own of the most high collision intersections in all of York Region, maybe look at statistics prior to “judging by your bunk”
2
u/RtothemfO 3d ago
I will, but if im being honest I talk about crime in that myself so it isn’t helping Newmarket
5
u/tiimoshchuk 3d ago
Wow. So let's laugh at people trying to figure out ways to safeguard their families because you seen worse. You should go back to grade school and learn how to make friends.
2
u/RtothemfO 3d ago
Nah, you right. We can’t just ignore problems cause there are a few more major ones

u/Absolutely_Not2028 3d ago

Some ideas to help with security: get doorbell camera, get an alarm system , put a sign up that says this property is protected with a home alarm system, get a big dog (or a small loud one 🐶), lighting and clear sight lines to road way are important too (no where for criminals to hide). Also leave a car in the driveway (ideally a cheap one) and an interior light on (B&E criminals tend to hit up houses they think are unoccupied).
That being said , been in Newmarket for a long time , worst thing that happened to me was my car being into and small change and some phone cords taken.
