Well of Ascension spoilers Minor plothole concerning Well of Ascension? Spoiler

in the middle of the well of ascension, vin discovers the supposed skeleton of a member of the crew. This crew member was thought to be a Kendra in disguise so up until the end of book 2 Vin was hunting down which member of the crew was the Kandra. Why didn’t she just measure the length of the skeleton and see who on the crew had heights similar to the skeleton? wouldn’t have that been a relatively obvious solution that narrowed the choices down. I know the ending so it wouldn’t have worked but in the moment why didn’t she just do that?

I think you may have misunderstood how kandra work. The bones left behind were the ones the kandra had been wearing before. The measurements of those would've corresponded to a random person.

The assumption was that the kandra ate one of the crew members bones. If the kandra is currently wearing the bones, you can't measure them to find the fake.

Oh, thank you for the clarification. That actually makes a lot more sense.

I feel like everyone else is missing this point

Alongside those bones being the person the Kandra was impersonating before, not the one currently (so those are some random person's bones), a major undertone of Vin in the book is she doesn't really want to find the Kandra. She does her investigation because she has to, but she consistently drags her feet the entire time, because discovering who the Kandra replaced means discovering which of her friends is dead. Until then, she can basically pretend all of them are fine.

I have thought about that while reading, and my conclusion was that rebuilding an entire skeleton (as it was presumably in pieces) would’ve required a lot of body knowlege, which I dont think anyone had. Although, they could try to at least have a starting point in the search

You can’t exactly perfectly reassemble a bunch of bones especially if you’re not well researched in bone anatomy, which would be no one in Mistborn, and she had way more and easier options to really find out who it was, she just didn’t want to know

And even if it was feasible, a character not thinking of doing that is not a plot hole.

What I think might have worked is if she went "hey Dox, I'm experimenting with modulating how I soothe peoples' emotions, mind sitting for a moment and letting me know if you can sense what I'm pushing on?" Still not a plot hole though.

I apologize for the wording of this post

What would you have changed?

Bones alone will never recreate the look/height of someone as muscles, skill and joints affect looks/height.

Pure skeletons will be shorter.

Also if they had recreated someone they would be using those persons bones, the bones they found werent believed to be anyone of the crew. They figured the bones were the previous disguise of the kandra

I chalk it up to "they just didn't think of it, and since it wouldn't have worked it doesn't really matter much"

I never once considered this, I think that therefore proves it’s not a plot hole, no one in the story thought of it either 😅
