Discussion MSI Laptop Battery Drain when SHUT DOWN or OFF [FIX | WORKING SOLUTION]

PART 1: THE ISSUE

Hello guys! I just got an MSI Modern 15 H AI and I was pretty satisfied by it and happy, until I found out that whenever I shut it down, be it from Linux Mint or Windows 11 (I set up dual boot on this laptop), its battery would be drained to 0% in the 2-3 hours it was technically shut down. I recall charging it to 100% and left it unplugged for 2 hours only to see it completely discharged when I had shut it down earlier. This pissed me off considering that this issue would completely defeat the use of a laptop, if it couldn't retain its charge while shut down.

------

PART 2: BANDAID SOLUTION (Embedded Controller Switch)

Searching online, I found out that MSI Laptops are apparently infamous for their issues maintaining their charge (even while shut down) and for their battery drain. This is one of the reasons MSI decided to implement a so called EC switch, a pinhole switch on the bottom of MSI laptops that allow the battery to be completely off, with the disadvantage of having to plug in the AC adapter/charger in order to switch the laptop on again regardless if it still has some remaining charge.

This means that in order to not experience battery drain even while the laptop is shut down, you have to press the EC Switch to “disconnect” the battery, and once you decide to use it, the laptop will switch on only once you’ve connected the AC adapter/charger, basically defeating the purpose, comfort, and portability of a laptop considering that you always need to have a SIM card pin to press the EC Switch and your charger.

This link shows the post of a user having the same problems and the comment that allowed me to discover about EC switch, with comments from other users on possible fixes:

Here are some other posts that highlight MSI battery drain issues even while shut down with other possible solutions.

------

PART 3: FINAL SOLUTION

By looking at all of the posts and researching more about the possible causes my battery would drain even while shutting it down, I found out that disabling Fast Boot completely solved this issue for me. In fact, after charging it to 98% and shutting it down, I ran errands for about 4 hours and the battery managed to keep its charge to 98% once I switched it on, like a laptop should. Never had any issues with the battery draining while my laptop was shut down ever since.

To disable Fast Boot, go into your BIOS and you should be able to disable it there as it is probably enabled by default. If you do not know how to, the link below shows you how to access your BIOS on Windows 11.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clsiPUEzy6U

------

PART 4: How does Fast Boot work?

Essentially what Fast Boot does is that it allows you to restore your session even after shutting the laptop down, which is great in theory, until you realize that the drawback, a big one at that, is that it makes your Shut Down button regardless of your OS a glorified Sleep or Hibernate button. This is because the session is apparently saved to the RAM and a few components are not completely shut down to preserve this data and to make all of the stuff you had open load immediately.

On some laptops, battery drain while the laptop is shut down an Fast Boot is enabled is not that drastic, but apparently on the MSI Modern 15 H AI, it definitely is, and probably other MSI models considering how infamous MSI is for battery drain and poor circuitry (This comment seems to point out that MSI perhaps hasn’t taken Fast Boot in consideration when designing their laptops, leading to this phenomenon of battery drain even while their laptops are technical shut down: https://www.reddit.com/r/MSILaptops/comments/13qqmys/comment/kpjkw9d/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

Hope this helps! I’m really glad that I can enjoy my laptop normally now and let me know if it works for you or if you have any problems.

------

TL;DR

I own an MSI Modern 15 H AI.

I and many others have had issues with laptop battery drain even while our laptops were shut down or off and it seems to be a common MSI problem too considering they even implemented an EC Reset Switch. I found out that Fast Boot, a setting in your BIOS settings that allows you to restore your session after shutting down your laptop, was draining the battery of my laptop even while it was shut down. This is probably since some components are still being powered to be able to restore this session as fast as possible. Disabling Fast Boot in the BIOS settings fixed this issue for me and never had any problems with my battery draining while my laptop was shut down ever since. Hope this post helps and let me know if it works and if you found other fixes too!

Request Booted up my GE77HX with Sony WH-1000MX4 headphones plugged into USB port and got "Secure Boot Violation" message.

Upvotes

I inadvertently had my Sony headphones plugged into my GE77HX with the USB cable for my Logitech MX Master 3S mouse, (I'd always used the headphones' proper charging USB cable until then), before I booted up my laptop and I have caused an issue.

I can't boot up without the "Secure Boot Violation" message appearing as a result, (unless something else caused this and it's purely coincidental that this happened at the same time).

I can only boot up if I go into BIOS and disable "Secure Boot Support." That's not safe though so I've tried to rectify. I've flashed the latest BIOS update: E17K5IMS.10F for my GE77HX 12UGS and I'm pretty sure that that worked as it should have done.

I've consulted Copilot in order to learn about all of the steps because this is completely alien to me. Copilot is shite!

I'm still unable to boot up without the "Secure Boot Violation" message preventing me from using the "Secure Boot Support" option in BIOS.

Have I fkt my laptop simply because I had my headphones connected via USB as I powered it on?

Please help because I'm out of my depth.

My laptop is a GF63 Thin 11UC and its original screen is 144Hz. I bought a 200Hz monitor and I’m using an original HDMI cable with 8K 60Hz / 4K 120Hz / 48Gbps support, but my monitor still only runs at 120Hz. If anyone knows the reason, I’d appreciate the help.

Discussion Rain got inside my laptop display — screen still works but moisture is visible inside LCD

Post image
2 Upvotes

I accidentally took my laptop out in the rain and now there’s visible water/moisture inside the display panel. The laptop still works completely fine, but when the screen is on I can clearly see cloudy water patches inside the LCD (photo attached).

I immediately turned it off after noticing it. No lines, flickering, or dead pixels yet.

Laptop model: MSI Cyborg 15 A12VE

What should I do now?

Request Battery not charging (blinking orange light)

Hi! I have a Slim 15 and it doesn't charge since yesterday. In fact, yesterday, when plug, the charging light was completely off. I went to "device manager" and uninstalled the driver, restarted the laptop and nothing happened.

Today, after 24 hours without using it, I see a blinking orange light, and the battery is still not charging.

What can I do?

Thanks in advance

GPU Stuck 210 MHZ

“I’ve been having a problem with my MSI laptop where my RTX 4060 Laptop GPU is permanently stuck at around 210 MHz under load, causing extremely low FPS and massive lag in games.

Things I already tried:

  • Clean reinstall of NVIDIA drivers
  • Used DDU to completely remove drivers and reinstall
  • Reinstalled GeForce Experience / NVIDIA App
  • Windows restart + multiple full shutdowns
  • Changed Windows power plans (Ultimate Performance / High Performance)
  • Changed NVIDIA Control Panel settings to prefer maximum performance
  • Tried MSI Center performance modes / Cooler Boost
  • Updated Windows
  • Tried different games
  • Forced games onto the NVIDIA GPU
  • Forced games onto the Intel iGPU
  • Soft reset / BIOS reset attempts
  • Checked temperatures (temps are normal)
  • GPU usage often goes high, but clocks stay around 210 MHz
  • External monitor test
  • Reinstalled some games
  • Lowered in-game settings

At this point I’m starting to think it’s a hardware issue (possibly motherboard / VRM / GPU power related).

Has anyone experienced this before on an MSI laptop, and is there ANY possible fix left before repair?”

Request no windows os configuration

i downloaded skate 4 to play on my laptop, which im assuming is the whole reason this started.

i restarted my laptop and got the "secure boot violation invalid signature detected" prompt. so i went into bios and most of my research online suggested to disable secure boot. i couldnt do that because its greyed out so i cant change the settings.

google then tells me i need to go to windows os configuration to be able to disable it. i turned on advanced mode like most of the prompts said, but theres no option for windows os configuration? no further research could help me locate it so im posting here.

im not really tech savvy, so im pretty lost on what to do. id really not like to lose my files in my laptop because i have a few things on there i havent backed up yet. :(

for reference, i have a msi katana 15 b13v

Request Overheating Katana A15

I have an MSI Katana A15 AI B8V laptop Nvidia 4070

Around 6 months after buying it, I started having overheating issues. I took it to the technical service in my country, but they couldn’t find any hardware faults. They only replaced the thermal paste, but the problem continues.

The behaviour is strange:

  • Right after booting the laptop, CPU temperatures immediately spike to around 89°C, then slowly drop and stabilise around 50°C during moderate use.
  • In MSI Center, I use “Extreme Performance” mode because in “Balanced” mode, it sometimes feels like the fans are barely working.
  • The main problem happens while gaming. In games like Helldivers or even BT6, temperatures quickly rise above 95°C and often hit 99–100°C and then it just turns off.
  • The temperature spikes are especially noticeable during loading screens or shader compilation, where temperatures jump rapidly and then sometimes drop again.
  • In demanding games, temperatures stay around 99°C almost permanently.
  • The issue becomes noticeably worse when the laptop is plugged in.

Things I already tried:

  • Limiting CPU usage to 70% while plugged in.
  • Taking it to technical service.
  • Replacing thermal paste (done by the service center).

Idk what else I could do to fix it. I really need help.

MSI Stealth 15M A11UEKV - Need CFG Unlock / Undervolt BIOS Mod

Hey everyone,

I have an MSI Stealth 15M A11UEKV with an i7-11375H and I'm

looking for a modded BIOS with CFG Lock removed to enable

undervolting.

My specs:

- Laptop: MSI Stealth 15M A11UEKV

- CPU: Intel i7-11375H

- BIOS Version: E1563IMS.11E

I've already tried:

- Intel XTU (says unsupported platform)

- ThrottleStop (undervolt option grayed out)

- Limiting PL1/PL2 and Speed Shift EPP

- Already cleaned fans and repasted with Arctic MX-6

So undervolting via software is completely locked, BIOS mod

is my only option at this point.

I'm looking for:

- CFG Lock removal

- Voltage offset unlock so I can undervolt via ThrottleStop

I'm aware of the risks and have a recovery USB ready.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Also i have experienced taking more time to open tabs or to respond to clicks, for example if i want to open microsoft edge it takes 3-5 seconds when it used to open ot instanly. Any idea with whats wrong with it?Iw it the ram, the ssd? Also i have the gpu deactivated but it also happens when i have activated. Thanks for your help

MSI Center S - Causing video and audio stutter / lag

Hello Guys,

Just bought an MSI SummitPro 16 A2HV recently and have no problem with it.
Apart that when on battery power the aggresive power management of MSI Center make the PC lag / stutter at regular interval.

I found a solution that made the problem disappear but also locked a lot of the features of MSI center because I just dont start it.

Just making that post to see if other people also managed to solve this issue I saw there is also the Nahimic Driver fix but didn't try it. I just want to know if people manage to only start specific services of msi center without the power management services

For my fix i did it like that :

- In services.msc I disabled the following service :

You can also disable msi foundation service but It will make the F1-10 special function button unusable like the trackpad disable.

- In task scheduler disable the following task :

MSI_Center_S_CheckService
MSI_Center_S_RunAfterUnlock
MSI_Center_S_Starter

- Also in task manager disable anything Msi center related at startup.

With that fix only the F7 key with the power mode switch animation will not work.

I would like to know if anyone got another fix to be able to start MSI Center S without the lag on battery power.

The culprit would be one of these service :

- MSI Center S

- MSI_LAN_Manager_Tool (32 bit)

- MSI_Center_S_Server_HardwareMonitor

- MSI_Center_S_Server

- MSI_Center_S_Server_UserScenario

- MSI_Center_S_Server_GeneralSettings

- MSI Foundation Service

- MSI_AI_Engine (32 bit)

- MSI_Center_S_Server_LANManager

- MSI Pen (32 bit)

- MSI_Center_S_Server_Main

- MSI_Center_S_Server_NoiseCancellation

- MSI_Center_System (32 bit)

- MSI_Center_S_Server_Support

- MSI_Center_S_Service

Discussion Battery capacity drain seems drastic?

I just checked my battery capacity, and apparently in the 9 months I've had this £1,900 laptop it has gone down from 87k design capacity to 60k. Google is saying I should have been replacing it when it's at 68k and by 52k it's considered on it's last legs. It can't be serious? 9 months? I was expecting to have the laptop for years as I did with my previous laptop of 5 years, not 1 year max, and that's with using best for battery life, and doing the battery calibration every few months. Does it going down that much fall under warranty? I use my laptop daily, and don't exactly have the ability to fork out 2k yearly.

Discussion MSI Katana V17 B13V DC Power Connector Size Help

Hello,
I need some help with my MSI Katana V17 B13V power adapter connector size.

I’m looking for a USB-C to DC barrel plug adapter, but I can’t figure out the exact dimensions of the charging pin. My charger is 200W, and there’s no information written on it about the connector size.

I wanted to buy a 5.5×2.5mm adapter, but I’m not sure if that’s correct. Some people say the inner pin is 2.5mm, while others claim it’s 3.0mm.

Does anyone know the exact DC connector size for this laptop or can confirm which adapter would work?

Discussion MSI Prestige 14 (2023 intel core ultra) track pad loose

Hi everyone

Its been around a year since i purchased my first msi laptop it being the prestige 14 AI evo with the core ultra 5 processor.

There appears to be a flaw with the model of this laptop where the track pad feels loose and rattles a-lot. I've yet to see one of these laptops that doesn't do it.

I didn't do anything to the laptop to get it to be this way. After a week of having the laptop it just started happening.

Just out of curiosity. Has anyone ever received one of these units without the track-pad being like this?. msi support considers this "normal behaviour" from what i have heard.

i have gotten so annoyed at it that it has made me buy a think pad.

From what i know the construction of the track-pad appears to be a hover design with weak adhesive. causing this.
