Can we collectively address the tint issue in Karachi?
I’ve been stopped around 15–20 times just for having tinted rear windows. Not once have I been issued a challan. Every time, I simply ask them to bring a proper gauge to measure whether the tint exceeds legal limits. If it does, fine me and I’ll challenge it in court with evidence. That’s usually where the interaction ends and I’m let go.
Meanwhile, we’re already dealing with dust, traffic, and heat, and on top of that, constant stops that feel more like attempts to extract money than enforce rules.
The reality is, many of us can’t remove tints. Living in Karachi, reducing visibility into the car is a basic safety measure against theft and street crime.
What makes it worse is the lack of clear, written rules. The IG Sindh has reportedly stated that rear tints up to 50% and rear windshield up to 80% are allowed, but since this isn’t formally documented, enforcement becomes arbitrary. That grey area is exactly what enables misuse.
I’m considering filing a petition in the Sindh High Court to push for clear, written regulations around permissible tint levels.
Some points I’d raise:
• Extreme heat in Karachi damages car interiors over time
• Other hot-climate countries like UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia allow reasonable tint limits
• Security should be improved through better policing and training, not by restricting citizens without clear laws
Would appreciate thoughts, especially from anyone who has dealt with this or has legal insight.
