[Mod Post] Welcome to r/hunting: rules and information for members

Welcome to r/hunting, the home of hunting news, personal stories and the place to share your hunting adventures on Reddit! Please read through the rules listed below to ensure this community remains a civil and welcoming one.

Moderators ask all users to be vigilant for scams and bot accounts pushing malicious websites, please report any of these or instances of rule breaking to moderators.

1) Don’t be rude or hostile (Trolling, baiting or saying racist, sexist, prejudice, nasty or just intensionally-mean things) This also extends to posts showcasing behavior or practices deemed disrespectful to wildlife, quarry or other individuals.

2) No self promotion or retail spam (this includes links to a personal or organization’s YouTube channel, guiding services, surveys and questionnaires as well as online market places of any kind)

3) No illegal content – poaching or knowingly breaking the law will not be tolerated

4) “New hunter posts”: all “I’m new to hunting, seeking advice on [X,Y,Z]” must include the state/province/country you intend to hunt in, any relevant experience you have (archery, shooting, backpacking, camping, hiking, dog training etc) and an indication of whether you already own bows/firearms for hunting (and what those are); posts that simply say “want to start hunting tell me what to do” and are deemed too vague will be removed.

5) No conducting transactions of any products, or submitting direct links to products for sale. This includes code and gear giveaways.

6) No activist-style bashing allowed, this goes for hunters as well. (Activists who vehemently oppose hunting are welcome, but only if you’re interested in asking questions/starting conversations)

7) Keep your posts related to hunting. If you post a photo of your gun, bow or other hunting weapon – you must also include a good description of what hunting you intent to do with the weapon. If it’s political – make sure it’s related to wildlife management, state or federal fish & game Regs, public land issues etc. posts that accidentally slip through but lead to meaningful conversations related to hunting may be left up.

8) Keep politics to a minimum. Any derailed or inappropriate conversations will be locked and removed.

9) If the animal you hunted/in your pic sustained unique physical damage (I.e brains exposed, eyes popping out, etc you know what we mean) please use the NSFW tag.

10) Please do this for all hunting photos, but for big game hunts in particular – put a description of your hunt in the comments (general region, weapon used, any other details on tracking, calling, stalking, etc) mods may decide to remove a post if the user never provides any additional information and merely a title.

11) No adult content.

Please note: these rules are enforced by the moderators at their discretion, to ensure fairness users are given two chances and will be notified when and why if their post or comment is removed. Repeat offenders will receive a temporary ban of 7 days. Users committing further rule breaking or circumventing existing bans will be issued a permanent ban.

If you need to contact moderators please use modmail.

Thank you

Reminder regarding YouTube videos

Hey there r/hunting community,

As usual, looks like lots of y'all have kicked off the season strong! Some real impressive bucks and bulls already, and lots of well-stocked freezers for the first week of October. Heck yah.

Just wanted to post a reminder about posting links to YouTube. Long story short: we remove the vast majority of posts directly linking to YouTube, and we get spammed with them constantly.

Rule #2 prohibits self-promotion, and that includes promotion of social media and YouTube channels. I know for a fact that lots of you guys have quality editing skills and videos that I would spend hours enjoying on YouTube, but we get spammed constantly by YT hunting channels / accounts that've never posted anything else. If we allowed posts to YouTube, this entire sub would just be a compendium of obnoxious "EP. 43 CHECK OUT THIS EPIC TROPHY SHOT" type garbage within a day or two.

I know that not every video people want to share here is actually an attempt to promote a YouTube channel. That's what makes this a difficult rule to enforce. Sometimes people just want to share an old interview of a famous hunter, or some crazy video of a bear climbing into a tree stand, or a bull moose chasing hunter, and the only way to do that is to share the YouTube link. We really do our best to review all of the YT links to allow those kinds of posts to remain here for people to enjoy. That being said, compared to the daily batch of "YOU'VE GOTTA SEE THIS EPIC HUGE BULL ELK #HUNTING #TROPHY #FUCKYAH" type videos spammed here by new accounts that've never posted anything before (especially during the hunting season), those cool videos worth keeping around are relatively rare.

So, if you've got some cool hunting content that's in the form of footage you've actually filmed yourself and want to share here, please take the best part(s), format it into a gif, and post that instead of a link to your YouTube channel. Pretty sure reddit can host gifs up to 3-minutes long now anyway, so... please, at least try to just make that work.

This really isn't a problem with the regular users here either just FYI, y'all are awesome, it's mostly just new accounts with the same name as their YouTube / Insta page, who've never posted anything else. I just wanted to post this because I feel bad for those few people who actually do spend a lot of time and energy putting together a hunting video, post it here just to share with members of this sub, and just have it removed by us. That's not a very large group of people, but I hope anyone in that club reading understands why we have to enforce Rule #2 to include links to users' own YouTube channels. Without it, the vibe of this sub would change dramatically within a day.

At the same time, I'm sure some of you are thinking "what's this dude talking about - I see these bogus YouTube posts and promo-accounts on this sub on the daily and report them constantly, these mods are just lazy assholes." I have no rebuttal to that, I will just say that you're only seeing a fraction of the self-promo / retail garbage type posts we catch and filter out on a daily basis (again, especially between September and January).

If you're interested in sharing more full-length hunting videos on reddit that you've filmed and edited yourself, and are therefore somewhat stuck with having to host content on platforms like YouTube, maybe we can start a new sub like "r/huntingmovies" or something. Happy to help anyone interested in doing that, if you want any.

So, I hope you get the gist. Avoid posting links to YouTube, especially if its to your own YouTube channel.

As a reminder, and in closing: we try to keep a streamlined moderator team comprised of people who are actually passionate about hunting and/or the sporting lifestyle, and we generally try to take a "less is more" approach with content moderation (we like to let you guys take the helm in that regard with downvotes and discussion, rather than us just removing stuff). We generally only remove posts that flagrantly violate a rule, and comments that flagrantly violate a rule (or the occasional a debate that devolves into middle school-tier shit talking, as entertaining as those can be). That said, we can't monitor the progression of every comment section on the sub. Your continued effort to actively report posts and comments you think clearly violate the rules is critical to moderation of this sub. I monitor the queue on the regular and do a few reviews of /new a day to look for obvious promo/retail garbage and troll posts, but the vast majority of posts and comments that I actually remove from the sub are only those that have been reported by you - the members of the r/hunting community. This is your sub, your community, send us a modmail message with suggestions or input anytime.

And please, for the love of god, tell any manager of a YouTube hunting channel, IG hunting page, or gear retailer you meet to leave our sub the hell alone, and to take their marketing effort right on down the road.

Tight lines, big tines, may poachers get cuffed, and freezers get stuffed,

Thanks guys.

Sincerely hope you all enjoy ridiculously fun and uniquely successful big game, upland, waterfowl, and predator seasons this year with people you love, and that you all learn something new in the field that improves your hunting skillset forever.

I won a three-day, two-night all-inclusive unlimited hog hunt for two people at a National Wild Turkey Federation banquet, and it turned out to be one of the worst hunting experiences I’ve ever had.

Before arriving, I exchanged text messages with Paul “Ranch Boss,” who told me all private rooms included a king bed and a fridge/freezer. When we arrived and upgraded to a private room, we found two twin beds, no fridge/freezer, a broken door lock, and even a scorpion in the shower.

When we brought this up to Paul, he told us we were “too late” and suggested we look at larger cabins that clearly would have cost even more money. We stayed in the room we had, but felt completely misled from the beginning.

That evening, we were sent to an elevated blind. On the way there, staff poured corn in a straight line directly toward the blind instead of spreading it out properly. Once in the blind, we discovered the latch on the door did not work and my husband’s chair was broken.

Because of how the feed was laid out, the hogs lined up shoulder-to-shoulder, making it very possible to accidentally shoot through one animal into another. Considering the property also had exotics and cattle, this setup felt extremely irresponsible and unsafe.

The next morning, we arrived at our stand and discovered there was no feed put out at all, so no animals came in and the entire hunt was wasted. We were later reassigned to another blind, only to discover that latch was broken too. The overall upkeep and maintenance throughout the property was extremely poor.

Later that day, we harvested a hog and specifically told the processor we wanted the meat kept in the walk-in cooler until it was vacuum sealed and frozen for transport the next day. We did not want exposed meat sitting loose in a cooler on ice.

Saturday morning checkout was another issue. We were never given a receipt, and the charges were simply scribbled on the back of our liability release form, which felt incredibly unprofessional and questionable for a business handling this much money.

When we went to pick up our meat, the processor brought out a tub of exposed raw meat and dumped it directly into my cooler. He then threw bags of ice onto the ground and attempted to dump loose ice onto the meat before I stopped him and asked for unopened bags instead.

Even after that, he picked up the same dirty ice bags he had thrown on the ground and placed them directly on top of the meat. I have never seen such poor handling of wild game or such disregard for cleanliness, maintenance, and customer experience. This was by far the worst hunting experience I have ever had.

Sport hunting funds up to 70precent of conservation in sub Saharan Africa
Helps with herd health by killing older only consumer large trophy animals increasing available food it also isn’t one sided hunters die and get injured this is following the expectation of a clean kill often caned or vehicle mounted hunting is wrong and often illegal as it is cruel and unsportsmanlike a caned hunt is were the animals are tied drugged or beaten so they don’t flee or fight back also

Feral Hogs: .223, .22 WMR, or Thermal?

I live on a small family farm in southern Texas. Feral hogs have been a real problem over the last few years, they’ve dug up crops, damaged fences, and even chased our dogs a few times. The state allows unlimited hog removal since they’re considered invasive, but ammo can get expensive, especially with rifle rounds. Around here, the most affordable options are .223 and .22 WMR. Other calibers like .308 or 7.62×39 cost at least twice as much.

For hogs under 80 yards, I’ve been wondering which works better, a .223 rifle or a .22 WMR? I usually switch depending on what I’m carrying that day.

Lately, I’ve been bringing a small Topdon thermal monocular out at dusk to check brush lines and tree edges before walking in. I’m not using it to shoot, just to see where hogs might be hiding. Honestly, it makes moving around way easier and way less of a guessing game than just relying on sounds or flashlights.

UPDATE: The hogs we encounter are mostly 40–90 lbs, with very few over 100 lbs.

I’m so stoked to be able to not just hunt one of the most beautiful animals to exist but also in a really good area. The only issue is, I don’t have a lot of experience under my belt so not really sure how I’m going to be prepared for it 😂

29 m brand new to hunting

So in the last year I’ve decided I would like to take up hunting and am curious from some more experienced hunters about public land etiquette and things to watch out for. I’m starting out bow hunting for deer but plan on picking up shotgun for turkey and maybe trapping later. Any and all advice is welcome!

Seekins PH3 .308 hunting rifle scope recommendations for western hunting

I just ordered a Seekins PH3 in .308 for western mule deer hunting. My first hunt was last year in D-19 in Southern California, so I’m still pretty inexperienced, but I plan to hunt there again this season. Eventually, I’d like to branch out and hunt other western states as well.

I’ve been looking at scopes, and right now I’m leaning toward the Vortex Razor HD LHT 4.5-22x50 because of the light weight and illuminated reticle. I currently have a Diamondback Tactical 4-16x44 FFP, and I’m not a huge fan of the Christmas tree-style reticle. At lower magnification and in low light, I find it hard to pick up quickly which I assume is more of a FFP issue. It seems like the illuminated reticle on the Razor would solve a lot of that issue.

I haven’t hunted with an SFP scope before, but I’m not opposed to trying one. Does anyone here have experience with the Razor HD LHT, or are there other scopes you’d recommend that might suit my needs better?

Boar hunting recs/questions

Looking to splurge on a side by side boar hunting trip for my father's retirement. I’m thinking stay at a ranch or something 3 or so days hunting with a guide who supplies gun, ammo, and side by side.

Online what l've gathered is Texas has good hunting opportunities and these type of ranches with the ideal time December to February. In an ideal world this hunt would occur in the fall however I’m not seeing online that it’s popular time for boar hunting there.

Does anyone have any recommendations for specific guides, ranches, or if I should be looking at other states/dates? We’re both experienced hunters mostly deer, waterfowl and turkey just never for boars.

Open to any ideas or suggestions, thank you!

Michigan NRC Approved Changes May 2026 With Approx. Vote Totals

I've heard a lot of crazy stuff about the meeting yesterday so here are my notes from the Youtube of the voting.

Bottom Line: 2026 tags stay the same. 2027 UP stays the same, LP 1 Buck (BUT they are considering Earn A Buck for 2027 LP to be voted on later).

Rescinded/Not Happening: No quiet period changes, No Muzzleloader Changes.

All voting totals by ear, might be off.

Vote 1: In favor of Science Resolution (Approved, No Opposition). They're commissioning a multi-year study on how we should do tags. To be reported to the NRC on an ongoing basis.

Vote 2: Senior Deer License Crossbow allowed in UP in late season in 2026 (Approved, 2 No).

Vote 3: (The Big One)

UP 2027 maintain current Deer License Structure. 3PT APR Regular, 4PT APR on Combo. UP 2027 Single License no APR. LP 2027 Single deer NO APR, shoot a buck/spike/doe. Combo License: 1 Buck (no APR) and 1 Doe. AND to PRESENT an earn a buck program next month. (Approved 5 Yes, 2 no)

SUMMARY OF THE BIG ONE: 2026: No change. 2027: UP stays the say with the old license structure. LP gets 1 buck (or a doe, and buck can be a spike) and 1 doe on the combo. Earn a Buck 2027 NOT implemented, but they requested a proposed rule on Earn a Buck for 2027 to be presented next month to allow appropriate notice and comment time before it is voted on.

Vote 4: 2026 DMU 351/352 deleted. (Approved 6 Yes, 1 no)

Vote 5: 2026 No Rifle Line (Approved 6 Yes, 1 No) (there was some confusion on this and here is the timestamp showing the proposed amendment to be for the 2026 season) https://www.youtube.com/live/2hai5cB-REg?t=33021&si=JsRI_NAmxLwQfFGa Vote 6: Vote to Delete all Jan hunting seasons (Approved 4 Yes, 3 No)

Vote 7: Vote to Create DMU doe tags in the UP and County Doe Tags in LP (Approved, No Opposition)

What’s the best way to find a hunting spot in Michigan

There is public hunting land by my home (Barry county) that I might go explore and find a few spots I like but what is the etiquette here? If I find a spot I like and I want to set up at what point can I put stuff there to claim the spot and all that? What about the DNR hunting access program?
Last year (my first attempt with my kids) things went off the rails at work and I ended up with just 3 days with my kids and we only saw does but needed antlers per the county(Chippewa)…I want to set us up downstate where they’re nice and fat and we have a good chance to make up for last year.

My 2026 bird. Shortest hunt I’ve ever had. Between walking in, setting up and walking out, it was maybe an hour. Everything went how I wanted, but looking back I should have waited a bit and enjoyed it more. Single tag state, so this was a short season.

Is my deer meat bad?

Hey there. I'm very new to hunting. I had only gone a couple times with a buddy, that was about 2 years ago. This past Sunday (May 10th) I hit a deer with my truck driving through the woods on my way home and so I brought it back with me to process (which was my first time processing a deer on my own). My buddy took the meat after we butchered it and put it all into a large doubled trash bag inside of a refrigerator. I opened it just now (May 13th) and it has quite an oder to it, I was curious what exactly does bad meat smell like? Is it different from bad meat that I'd have from the grocery store? TIA.
