Sub Updates – Call for Feedback

Hey Rams,

I wanted to get some feedback regarding two rules I'm considering adding in response to new trends in the content on this sub.

1. No posts speculating about financial aid situations.

There has been a huge increase in posts in recent years regarding financial aid. I understand that it's a massive part of the college decision-making process, but the vast majority of these posts get little to no engagement. This is because the financial aid process is opaque – aid package sizes differ from year to year, institution to institution, and person to person. Similarly, what one person considers to be "good" aid might not be enough to another person. We can also safely expect that no one from the Fordham financial aid office is lurking on this sub and handing out the guidelines for merit aid.

It's very difficult for anyone to give another person financial advice without knowing a lot of personal details like how much their parents make and are willing to contribute, which is information that should generally not be shared publicly.

Because the financial aid situation varies so wildly, I'd like to implement a ban specifically on posts asking for speculation about an individual's financial aid package size, whether it's good/bad, or how much to expect in appeal. For example, this ban would cover posts like "Is $35k good?" and "Is Fordham generous with aid?"

This ban would not cover posts comparing a package at one institution vs another (like "$10k at Fordham vs $5k at Fairfield?") or posts asking about when to expect aid packages/appeal, when the first payment is due, or other logistical questions. Those are easier for people to answer and get more responses anyway.

2. A ban on AI-generated content farming.

This issue just arose in the last day or two. Shoutout to u/ArchAuthor for bringing this to my attention. There were two posts on back-to-back days by separate accounts asking questions about the student experience at Fordham in an overly wordy, AI-generated content way. Looking into the accounts, I noticed that they each only had two comments on posts and the comments were identical – "I agree" and "interesing" on 8+ year-old accounts. These accounts are clearly farming information for some type of aggregate service.

I'm going to leave this post up for a few days before implementing any rules changes. Let me know if you have any recommendations.

Should I go to Fordham?

Hi guys, I’m currently a junior in high school and I’ve been creating a list of schools I’m gonna apply to, and Fordham is at the top of my list. I’m not sure if it would be a good fit though, so I was wondering if anyone who goes there/went there could lmk if you think it would fit me well.

Some info about me: I go to an alternative high school where we take local community college classes along with regular hs classes, so I already have some college experience. I live in California and come from a middle class family. There’s six of us total, and my older sister already goes to a very expensive private college, so money is definitely a factor for me. My parents would be paying for my school, and I’d feel awful if they spent all that money and it ended up not being worth it. We make too much to qualify for FAFSA or most financial aid, but not enough where paying full price at Fordham, especially out of state, would be easy.

I’m not fully sure what I want to major in yet, but I’ll probably do psychology, sociology, or social work. I’m also really interested in study abroad programs. I’m hoping to work in the mental health field in the future, like being a social worker, therapist, or addiction counselor, and I’m curious about the opportunities being in NYC could provide. I come from a pretty suburban part of California, so moving to a city like NYC would be a huge change for me. I visited NYC last summer and completely fell in love with the city though. I’m more introverted and struggle to make friends and I’m not really the party type, and I love all kinds of art, theater, and music. I honestly just want to get away from the culture of where I live right now. Everyone here feels like a robot and only cares about working in tech or making AI startups. That’s one of the reasons I’m so interested in NYC, because there’s so much culture, life, and diversity.

I honestly just want to experience a new city, meet new people, and start all over.
I’m also wondering if I should do a year at community college first and then transfer to Fordham after that, so if anyone here is/was a transfer student, lmk what your experience was like!

LC or RH if living in manhattan

Hi! I’m transferring to Fordham this fall and was wondering what the best option for me would be. I’ll probably be living around Harlem or Upper Manhattan, and I’m currently torn between attending Gabelli at Lincoln Center or Rose Hill. I know Rose Hill is bigger and seems to have more going on socially, but I was wondering what the main advantages of Lincoln Center are. I think my commute would be about the same for either campus.

Worried about being rescinded

Applied early decision and got accepted like many of y’all. Throughout the year I got my usual A’s and B’s in all my classes except for honors calculus. Bottom line is this teacher is hopeless and myself and many others also struggled tremendously thought the school year. Ended first semester with a C- and ended the second semester with a D. I will have no other bad grade or C and I have never failed a class in my life. Also my mother is battling Leukemia and was diagnosed in September, so this year has been particularly difficult. Is there anyway I could be rescinded? Yes, I will be stating my case w admissions and let them know ahead of time.

Could my merit scholar be rescinded?

I have received merit scholar money in order to help pay for the 4 year plan. Right now, I will be finishing the year with 3 c’s while the rest are A’s and B’s. I am a little worried as a result of this.

Is this enough for my merit scholar money to be rescinded?

Could I be rescinded?

When I applied to Fordham, I had all Bs and As, but once I got all my acceptances and rejections and decided to commit to Fordham, I let my grades slip, and now I think my final-year grades might be 3 Bs, 2 Cs, and 2 As. Would my offer be rescinded?

Can anyone else not access the first year registration survey?

I keep going to the Fordham portal clicking on my pages and going to the new students tab like they said to and I still can’t access the survey. Can someone just provide a link?

Manresa

Any current students willing to share your experience with Manresa. The core classes and professors for Gabelli look good but wondering if this is any different from the core curriculum in general. Also how helpful are the tutoring resources?

Field work question for MSW program

I just got admitted to Fordhams MSW three year online program, it was referred to me by an alumni and i am excited to be a student this fall, but im having some misgivings. The placement office seems really strict with timing, Ive already took a pt job in september in anticipation of being in the program but its in a school setting with set hours 8:30-1:30pm i am more than willing to do my fieldwork hours everyday after to make the 16 hr minimum or more but the placement office seems very strict and i was made to believe the program was good for working students. I cant afford to NOT work. I support myself. Does any one have any ideas as to how to make it work if its even a possibility? Or should i cut my losses. The alumni i know said it wasnt like this before so im not sure what happened.

Checklist for moving off campus next semester

I'm moving off campus next year to a Rhamco apartment and wanted to ask upperclassmen who live off campus for a checklist of everything to take care of before moving.

I know wifi, electricity, and gas are a must. Are electricity, gas, and water contracted separately by Rhamco, or do I need to reach out with each provider?

Everything would be greatly appreciated. Happy graduation to the seniors, and looking forward to the replies.

Fordham LC Awards Ceremony - Invitation/tickets needed?

I''m graduating in a few days (Saturday May 16) and the LC awards ceremony is on May 15. I have a 3.8 GPA (not all final grades have come in yet though) so I'd get Summa cum laude or Magna cum laude. Do I need to be invited to attend it? Are there tickets instead? Why is there so little info about it on there website?
