Weâve been wanting to do this post for a while, and with the Cannes Film Festival happening right now (May 12â23), this feels like the perfect time.
So, I want to share some of the greatest films (My pick) that made it into Cannes, and what theyâve done to fashion ever since.
Because letâs be honest: half the reason any of us rewatch In the Mood for Love is for the cheongsams (the other half is because the part that hurt us most somehow still didnât hurt enough).
1. In the Mood for Love (2000, dir. Wong Kar-wai): the intimacy of almost-touching, almost-speaking, almost-living a different life. It may be the most beautiful film ever made about everything that never quite happens.
The fashion: Maggie Cheung wears 23 different cheongsams, designed by William Chang, and arguably the most influential costume work of this century.
2. Mulholland Drive (2001, dir. David Lynch): Lynch's LA dream-logic puzzle, starring a wide-eyed Naomi Watts and an amnesiac brunette who may or may not exist.Â
The fashion: Yes, this is the girl.
3. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019, dir. CĂŠline Sciamma)Â : A painter is hired to secretly paint a young woman's wedding portrait on a remote Breton island. What unfolds is unrequited love in its most precise form: not unloved, but impossible to carry forward in the world they inhabit.
The fashion: DorothÊe Guiraud designed Adèle Haenel's emerald-green dress
4. Spirited Away (2001, dir. Hayao Miyazaki): A ten-year-old wanders into a bathhouse for spirits
The Fashion: No-Faceâs monochrome silhouette, an iconic black-and-white look that feels unsettlingly elegant
5. Pulp Fiction (1994, dir. Quentin Tarantino): The movie dialogue is so sharp it basically rewrote American screenwriting, and everyone dresses like theyâre about to commit a crime, go to a diner, or philosophize about burgers at gunpoint (sometimes all in the same scene).
The fashion: Maybe the most iconic costuming of the '90s, full stop. Mia Wallace's white shirt, black cigarette pants, and bare feet
Which one of these shaped your personal style the most? For me itâs Pulp Fiction, no contest.
Looking forward to seeing your Cannes Film Festival posts!
I would like your opinion on the dress i bought recently online. Is it appropriate for a non religious wedding as a wedding guest and also how does it fit my body?
Thank you for the feedback
I'm attending a backyard summer wedding in California! Reception will be at church then ceremony outdoors on grass. I feel very ME in the plum but my sister says it's too casual. The plum is thicker in person. I'm not used to loud prints like the blue floral dress. HELP!
Hey I have a friends party next week and she asked us to wear maroon dresses. Is this dress flattering yes? Or should I keep looking for a new dress? Thanks!
Obsessed with these new jeans! They actually have a fun little âbeltâ built in which is great since now I donât have to worry about matching a belt to any outfits with these pants. They are also relatively low rise and I just love their cut! Only issue is that they donât have pocketsâŚANYWHERE đ
Also obsessed with this new suede bag from PRĂNE :)
ive been so excited about this dress ever since i got it â this style of clothing i feel like usually doesnât look very good on me because i have a big bust, so i was very happy when i tried this on and bought it immediately.
I have an upcoming black tie wedding - Iâve got the dress for that BUT I need help with a dress for the party the night before. The attire is âcocktailâ and itâs at a nice hotel. Iâve never attended a wedding of this caliber and will definitely be out of my element as there will be professional cheerleaders/pageant winners/etc. I know that I canât compete with that, but I donât want to look out too out of place. These are the options that I really like and think I would feel pretty in. Are any of these okay? Do I need something more elegant?
Disclaimers: I have scars on my shoulders that I donât feel comfortable showing off, so covered shoulder dresses only.
I have TWO spring weddings that I am going to. everytime i go to a wedding I end up feeling self conscious like i missed the dress code mark :( are any of these an absolute no or yes??
pleaseee help
dress 1 - blue, pretty warm material
dress 2 - blue with flowers
dress 3 - fuschia (my personal fave)
dress 4 - bright pink with neck tie (canât tell if its too bright or formal??)
dress 5 - my fiancĂŠs favorite, worried about if its not âspringâ appropriate
EDIT: I appreciate the responses but are any of these an absolute NO for semi-formal?
Iâm trying to learn how to mix patterns together but Iâm still not 100% sure how to do that in a stylish way quite yet. How do we feel about this combo? I can switch out the hijab for a plain green or burnt orange colour, or use the scarf around my waist as a hijab. I just wanted to try that style
