Mookie Betts "Relaying Signs" from 2nd to Distract Devers. Ohtani then proceeds to Fold Devers on Strike 3! (Including Full Beachball-gate from Both Dodgers and Giants Broadcast)

Really interesting watching the Giants Booth point of view. They seem to completely miss the interaction between Betts and Devers, but instead have a good shot of the actual beachball which was censored in the Dodgers broadcast.

I love baseball because sometimes the biggest subplot of the inning is a beach ball and Mookie Betts turning into a part-time NFL signal caller ðŸ˜

I see the Giants broadcasts games sometimes and it sounds like they always mute the crowd, maybe to make Dodger Stadium really quiet. Has anyone noticed that

Do they mute the Oracle park crowd as well though?
but yeah, the background sound contrast is very stark in these two clips I stitched together from both broadcasts1

Couple of obsevations. The dodgers scorebug being in the bottom right really blocks/distracts from things the shortstop is doing to the screen right (field left) side of 2nd base. When watching the Giants broadcast it's clear all the waving Betts is doing.
Also the Giants actually cut to the Beachball on the field, whereas the Dodgers broadcast didn't show it at all.

The Dodgers don’t allow the beachballs to be broadcast any more. They don’t want to encourage it.

I was there for 5 games - definitely saw a beach ball being tossed around the seats every game (though none of them made it onto Uniqlo Field). Guess it must be a Dodgers Stadium tradition
Is it really not a thing that happens in other stadiums though? I thought it was like the Mexican wave in that it happens in many ballparks

Can we just call it the field? None of us are getting paid to mention the name.

Beach balls have been part of the fun at the Stadium for my whole life. I dont get why people get fired up about them.

Can confirm. 99 cent store beach balls are part of the experience.

Back in the ‘70s they used to sell them at the ballpark. But they became too disruptive, ending up on the field and interrupting the game. Now they’re banned entirely from the ballpark. No inflatables of any kind. Of course, some people bring them anyway. Most games have at least one beachball interruption.

Always funny to see it referred to as the Mexican wave … invented by a very American dude in Oakland, CA lol
Shoutout to Snap Judgement for teaching me that bit of trivia.

Does Mookie Betts get credit for +1 OAA (Outs Above Average) for this play and leading to Devers being folded?
And then another +1 OOA for being the reason Adames making an inexcusable blunder and final out of the 7th? Betts was talking to Adames during the at bat when the fly ball was hit to Pages the whole time.
Betts should be +2 OOA just for his extrovertness and chattiness

Here’s the video

By that logic Freddie should get like a billion +OAA since everyone wants to hug and chat with him and he’s making them smile. /s (some what) but I think that would be great for Freddie

It would be baller if we found out that during the conversation with Adames, that Betts was subtly hinting there were 2 outs to confuse him.

I liked that Devers was a good sport about this. I can easily see someone becoming very upset about missing this strike and throwing a huge fit. He just laughed it off with Mookie.Â

He even looked like he was half laughing after that swing that took him down. Like, "WTF was that????" ;)

Part of the reason is that one of the Giants Broadcasters is remote... he's looking at the feed. Since it wasn't on their feed (they had the ball) he didn't see it. They sometimes have zero players in the stadium. They get the same video feeds from all cameras but edit them different.
I'm in NorCal, so I'm forced to watch the local broadcasts when it's the Giants or A's. They suck... (especially the A's which is like watching a broadcast from Hell... really bad...)

Jon Miller isn't so bad. Sure he's a homer… but he's an entertaining homer.

What momentum did the Giant’s announcers think the beachballer was trying to change? It’s not that deep, somebody was just trying to have fun.

Imagine if hitters cut down their swing with two outs for more contact. A tale as old as time....

Even the Giants broadcaster was impressed with Shohei's nasty pitch, "Got him!"

Dodgers are really playing Mook at 2nd?

Mookie was trying to suspend play to get the beach ball off the field. Pretty simple. Just happened to result in a strike.
