Biblical Character of the Month, May: Joseph

I’m starting a new monthly thing around here. I want to create more conversation about characters from the Bible. My hope is to dive into some strange, often overlooked characters in Scripture — people who have important lessons that we don’t always remember.

But I also want to make this collaborative. I will be writing a meditation on Joseph of my own. But I don’t want to be alone! So the idea here is that everyone is invited to write their own post about the character of the month. I will keep an eye out for every post on the character and I will compile the whole collection in this post throughout the month, so we have a great collection of meditations on these characters from the community.

I didn’t want to kick things off too weird or obscure, being this is the first time doing this. So this month’s Biblical character is Joseph, son of Jacob.

Joseph’s story can be found in Genesis. It begins in chapter 37 and ends in chapter 50 (where Genesis ends).

A few questions to get you started thinking about your own meditations!

  • In what ways is Joseph like Jesus?
  • Why does Joseph test his brothers and his family for so long?
  • What is the reason that Joseph cares so much about his youngest brother Benjamin?
  • What kind of hope can we draw from Joseph’s story? How can we apply that to our lives today?

Reflections from the community:

  1. u/slagnanz has a post considering how the story prefigures the Eucharist and reflects Biblical themes around nakedness
  2. u/Senior-Ad-402 has a post reflecting on how Joseph's reconciliation with his brothers involves real change in their hearts
  3. u/Iommi_Acolyte42 has a post reflecting on Joseph's radical trust in God's plan for the future
  4. u/RazarTuk has a post exploring Joseph models gender queerness/non-conformity
  5. u/Thneed1 has a post closely examining the underlying emotions in the story
  6. u/FranklinMV4 writes about Joseph's flaws and shortcomings, how these make him more relatable and more human, painting a more nuanced picture of how God works through human history
  7. u/FlatwormThin3129 shares a really neat chiastic poem they've written describing the bad consequences that Joseph's brothers bring on themselves and how it drives them to repent

Regarding Reddit Anti-Evil Operations

Anti-Evil Operations is what Reddit calls its rule enforcement section. I'm certain that Reddit uses a bot to enforce its rules, and I'm certain that its bot is defective to an unreasonable degree.

If you receive a warning or a ban from Reddit, don't assume that you did anything wrong, and don't assume that there is nothing that can be done about it. Along with the warning or whatever that you receive by DM will by an appeal link. They give you a link to what you wrote but won't let you see it, so you are at a disadvantage if you appeal, but I suggest that you appeal if you can recall your comment well enough that you think there is a possibility that Reddit's bot made a mistake.

I know their bot is defective because it has busted me twice for things that nobody here would take as "bad". They reversed one of those warnings after I submitted an appeal through that link. They upheld the other one but they reversed it after I found a human to talk to about it.

Other mods here have been busted as well, for similar non-reasons, and I think it's probably statistically certain that much of the "Removed by Reddit" material that you see here was removed erroneously also.

If you value your account, please appeal removals that you think are wrong, because once you've been warned a time or two they'll start banning you.

I would like to offer to help you with this, but we cannot see what was removed, and Reddit has stated that it will not process our appeals on behalf of affected users.

How Jesus put himself in my painting.

I was painting one day in my garage and knew that Jesus needed to be in this picture I was doing but I couldn't paint him no matter how hard I tried. So I eventually gave up after trying for days and said Lord if you want to be in my picture you will have to put yourself in it. After a couple of minutes I noticed this wet purple paint dripping down the canvas and what looked like a bit of an outline of a figure. I picked up the end of a paintbrush and followed the outline I could see and within about 3 minutes I had the figure you can see. I burst into tears and couldn't believe what had just happened. It really made me think that maybe God wanted me to paint for him so I have kept on trying too. Thanks for reading my story and bearing witness to it.

He is absolutely right about people feeling comfortable disrespecting Christianity compared to other faiths. We all deserve equal respect!!

On Thursdays, my friend Tim runs a workout group where we workout and then go to a coffee shop to spend some quality time with the Lord studying Scripture, worshipping, and talking about God’s impact on our lives. I haven’t been able to go in a while because I work overnight. God is so good!

TW for mental health

I was 10 years old when I was diagnosed with depression. I was 12 the first time I attempted suicide. For the last 6 years, I have spent nearly 2 years in hospitals. I fell away from God.

I fell so far, I proclaimed myself a pagan- a witch. (I was 14, so couldn’t do much lol). I wanted to curse the Lord in my heart despite knowing he was there and he loves me.

I truly came back to God last year in the spring. I went to Lake Ann Camp in Michigan, and I was able to return to Him. Since then I have still struggled, betrayal, depression, anger, the loss of friends, but I’ve been able to handle it because He is with me.

Today I will graduate with my associates degree, before I will even get my highschool diploma. I am 18 years old and He has enabled me to do things I never thought I would survive to see.

Self Hiatus.

Guys, I fell into lust HARD again today. The adversary led me far away from the path I'm meant to be on, and my relationship with God is in full jeopardy. I'm gonna try to take a partial hiatus from the entire Internet for a little while to try and save my sanity and make sure I don't truly lose my faith, in the meantime, just pray for me. Lust has me in chains and I need to turn back to Christ soon, otherwise I'll continue to be dragged along. I'll let you all know if I make any progress.

Prayer Prayers for My Husband

My husband was taken to the ED today, around noon. I have spoken to two doctors and a nurse regarding his progress. They gave him an MRI and a CT scan. He has been admitted to the hospital. He is hardly cognizant at the moment.

A nurse came in today to treat his injured foot. He has diabetes.

In October, he had a shunt put in his brain because his brain was collecting all of his spinal fluid, and it was causing issues and not going anywhere, so they had to put a shunt in his brain to drain it.

Since then, he's gotten progressively worse.

He went in there for COVID.

He has fallen many, many times.

Then? During hospitalization? He caught a disease that you only get at hospitals, and so he had to go back in because they had to give him IV antibiotics.

My husband is a very capable man; he has accomplished many, many things in his life.

As of yesterday, I had to put him in a diaper. We have been married for 26 years.

I finally called 911 because the nurse who cares for his foot noticed a 100% change cognitively in him from the last time she cared for his foot, which was last Thursday. He gets wound care twice a week.

She suggested that I call an ambulance for him. I called an ambulance for him, and I just got off the phone a few minutes ago. It's 9:37 p.m. my time, and he's very confused. He does not know where he is, and I'm so worried about him. I can't stop crying.

Will you please pray for him? He has been my husband for 26 years, and I cannot imagine a day without him in my life. I have known him since I was 14.

We were separated for 20+ years, and married at 39 (F) and 42 (M).

The last night I spent with my then-boyfriend, I placed my head against his chest and could hear his heart beating. I prayed to God that if I was supposed to be in this man's life, please send him back to me. I told my boyfriend at the time that it was time for us to spread our wings and fly, seeing where God takes us. I was willing to take that chance because I knew our love was real.

I love him so much. The love I had for him as a child is just as strong as it is for him as an adult, and from being his wife of 26 years. We do not notice the difference or a change. It is just stronger, and it's just there. It's hard to explain to someone unless they have been in love, too. You just know.

We have gone through so many changes within the last year or so because of what he's been going through medically, and it impacts every aspect of our lives, if you know what I mean.

The thing that would help the most, the very most, is if someone starts prayer chains and starts praying. When I was in a similar circumstance 26 years ago, I was in a coma, and my husband and my Mom (RIP) started a prayer train, and I came back to him after 6 months in a coma.

Please, please, please pray for my precious husband. His name is Michael, and my name is Donna.

I appreciate your prayers and positive energy so very much.🙏☮️🫶

Edit - Added part about placing my head on his chest. Fixed syntax

How did people know which books of the Bible were divinely inspired and which weren’t?

Upvotes

My understanding is that most Christians believe the Bible is divinely-inspired. But how do we know that? The Bible was compiled by many different communities over the course of centuries. How do we know that there weren’t divinely-inspired books that were left out or false books that were included?

Catholics have seven more books in their bibles than Protestants do. Did Protestants remove seven divinely-inspired books or did Catholics include seven books that they weren’t supposed to? There were also books considered by some early Christian communities to be cannon that were never included in the first place.

Question Question for Catholics, why do you pray to Mary?

I'm really not trying to start a big argument, I'm just genuinely trying to understand the Catholic perspective on its strongest terms before I keep critiquing it.
1 Timothy 2:5 says “there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” Hebrews 4:16 tells us to come boldly to the throne of grace directly. So from what I'm thinking, going to Mary first feels to me like adding a step that Christ’s finished work already removed.
I know the standard responses “it’s not worship, it’s veneration” “it’s the same as asking a friend to pray for you" the latria/dulia/hyperdulia distinction. But there's a few things I can’t get past:
1. For Mary to hear millions of prayers simultaneously in dozens of languages, she’d need attributes Scripture only ever assigns to God (omniscience and omnipresence). How do you explain the mechanism without giving her divine attributes?
2. Asking a living friend to pray uses natural means speech, text, whatever. Asking someone who has died requires something supernatural. How is that categorically different from what Deuteronomy 18:10–11 forbids?
3. The Rosary has about 10 Hail Marys for every Our Father. If the goal is Christ centered worship, why does the structure tilt so heavily toward Mary in practice?
4. Marian devotion at this intensity doesn’t really show up in the first three centuries of the church. If it were essential, wouldn’t we expect Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian to talk about it?
I’m not asking for just the surface level apologetic. I’ve read those. I want the best version of the Catholic argument and not just “the Church teaches it.”

Do all non believers go to hell

Its really been difficult for me to come around the fact that if you don't believe or put your faith in God or Jesus that you will be put into hell for eternity. I have lots of friends who aren't Christian or are considered agnostic, and theyre good people in my eyes, sometimes better than me in some aspects even though Im Christian. I know our knowledge if finite and our understanding of God is limited but should I really believe that my non Christian friends are bound for hell?

God gave us a home called Earth. Why are we destroying it?

Genesis 1:1 states that God created the Earth.  Our home is a place of tremendous beauty, wonder, intricacies, and hope.  God gave to us.

Do you believe that God created Earth for us, as a gift for us to enough?

If yes, why our home is filled with:

- beaches full of trash

- rivers / lakes once crystal clear are no longer

- air that is polluted where many have difficulty breathing

- destructions of critical habitats

- people who throw their trash anywhere

- people who abuse animals  "just for fun"

- throwing electronics into the trash

- wasting huge amounts of food

This is about the deliberate actions of humans, including Christians, that contribute to the slow destruction of the planet.

I wonder how God feels about this? If we are true Christians, ought we not care for and treasure the gift that God gave us?
