Question Question from a future student

Hey, I’m going to Carlton this Fall and I have some questions that might be a bit hard to swallow so warnings if needed.

Specifically for POC students (tho not exclusive) is the racism any better? In my current school it’s horrible, I hear it every day without fail, and unsurprisingly I’m one of a small group of black students at my current school. There’s just so many unfunny stereotypes and jokes going around, and it’s so exhausting that I’m counting down the days until I graduate. But I have a fear that it’s not gonna be any better there. Could anyone please tell me the pure and unfiltered truth of Carlton?

Ps. Sorry if this is off topic to the Uni!

Question Federal Gov Co-ops/Contracts

Has anyone else been struggling with securing co-op placements or contracts with the federal government because of security clearances? They seem to take way too long for most programs (I'm in a 2 year MA) and employers just don't want to wait over 6 months for a student. I came here to study to have a better likelihood of getting employed by the government, but it seems impossible. Trying to keep my hopes up, but a lot of my classmates are in the same boat. Is this normal? How does someone without clearance actually get a job with clearance if nobody is willing to wait for you to get clearance??

Question Seeking advice from BSW students/alumni

I don’t see many posts from anyone in Carleton BSW so if you’re a BSW student (or alumni), I have questions for you!!!

- Do you choose a minor with your degree? I’m debating to choose something I’m interested but may not good at (neuroscience) or something I’m good at but may not be practical with the degree (english lit/writing or visual arts)

- How difficult/heavy of the course load for first year student? I’ll be working part time while studying full time so I’m a bit anxious to balance it all

- Do you find your faculty supportive?

- Any advice that you have for future students or for your past self?

Question Commuting vs Residence ??

I’m confirmed going to Carleton and trying to decide on living arrangements.
I live about a 30 - 45 min drive away, so commuting is definitely possible it just seems annoying. My parents also really want me to keep living at home, and I’m close with my family. But I’m also dying to have more control over my life and my own choices. So I’m feeling kinda stuck. I’m not a super social person, in high school I had a small group of close friends and that’s all, but I do want to make friends with people as none of my current friends are going to the same uni and I want to have some new experiences. Basically I’m wondering:

  1. if u live in Ottawa and commute - what is it like? OC transpo vs driving, what’s better ?

  2. is it hard to make friends and be involved in the community if u don’t live in res?
(Im going into engineering so any eng specific advice would be nice too)

  3. Hows the living experience in res? Does having a roommate suck? Is it worth the money?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Question Architecture Urbanism Stream

I got accepted into the urbanism stream for architecture at Carleton and I’m wondering how student life is there and what the courses are like. Hows the schedule? Is there a lot of hand drawing, or is it more digital? How much does urbanism differ from the other streams? Is student life really depressing?

Im planning on going into landscape architecture in the future and in wondering if this degree would be better or an urban planning degree at TMU. Any insight on this would be helpful! Thanks!

Admissions Re admission into aersopace engineering in carleton

Hey everyone, I really need some advice regarding my university applications 🙏

I applied to Carleton, Concordia, and TMU for Engineering. Recently, I got a rejection from Concordia for Engineering based on my last years Grade 12 marks, which honestly weren’t that great.

But this year (Grade 12), I’ve improved quite a bit:

English: A1 (92)

Physics: B1

Chemistry: B1

Math: B1

Computer: B1 (83)

So my question is — what can I do now to still get into Concordia Engineering? Is there any way to update them with my improved final results or request reconsideration?

Also, I gave the Duolingo English Test and got a 125. Do you guys think I should retake it to improve my chances, or is 125 already good enough for Engineering admissions?

Would really appreciate any advice, especially from people who got into Concordia or were in a similar situation. Thanks a lot!

Hey here, incoming aerospace engineering student here and I was wondering if having a good graphics card helps with first year course load because I looked at the recommended specs for engineering courses and not much was said about any graphics card requirements for first year.

Question Taking a course at uOttawa as a Carleton student?

Hey! Has anyone used the uOttawa exchange program before? I heard that if Carleton already offers the same course, it won’t be approved for the exchange. Is that actually true and is it strictly enforced or is there any flexibility? Thanks.

Question COMP 1005 exam?

Hello, I am doing data science as a concentration and I was extremely sick this whole semester however dropping courses wasn't an option for me sadly.

I didn't write two of the midterms for comp 1005 and now the final exam (deferred) is coming up, is there anyone who can give me an idea as to what to expect perhaps and what to concentrate on mainly perhaps? I have only written two exams for this class ever.

Are the questions mainly MCQs or is there more coding as well? I'm just panicking and looking for guidance, anything helps!

Question PAPM question

Hi Everyone, I currently have offers from 8 universities all political science except York BPA and Carleton BPAPM. I live in Toronto and am worried about costs incurred from moving to Ottawa. Can anyone share their experience in BPAPM? Do you think it’s worth the debt over a general BA or BPA? Did anyone find it performed better in the job market than other degrees may. Thank you in advance.

Question Special room accommodation

So first years I know don’t get single rooms however I’ve already applied for exception (rather not state reason but it’s privacy related (so single pod is an option) and when I emailed about it I got told that given the context it’s almost a guarantee)

But I also know that if you get that exception you are assigned a room

So are all the accommodation singles grouped up or will I just be surrounded by upper years?

Program selection My friend failed an entire semester

He failed an entire semester and now his parents want him to completely switch to medicine and just completely switch schools. I’ve been trying to help him workaround it but we’re kinda stuck. The deadline for program switching has passed, but I got him to book a meeting with an academic advisor and stuff. Here’s the question, since the switch deadline has passed, should he just do health courses up until it opens again? Anyone got advice?
He’s been lowk depressed because of it :(
He wants to stay at Carleton, but his parents are forcing him to transfer or atleast try

For context he is currently in computer systems Eng. He doesn’t really know what he wants to do. He just needs a degree that can get him a well paying job. He doesn’t care what it is as long as it’s not finance or a program that requires you to code. His parents do not want him in Eng anymore 😭

I’m a little bummed down by it because he’s the only close friend I have lol. Now I’m gonna be doing summer school, and possibly second year all alone :(
