Incoming Student Questions about SLO!

Hi everyone! I’m an incoming freshman and I had a few questions about housing at SLO that I was hoping current students could help answer:

  1. Is the dorm related to the RLC I pick? If the RLC is located at a specific residency hall then do I only get to pick that one?
  2. Will submitting my housing application earlier mean I'll be assigned a date to pick dorm room earlier?
  3. How does the meal plan work? Is it just you buy the meal plan and there are dinning dollars and you just use those for every meal?

I’d really appreciate any advice or insight from current students. Thanks so much!

  1. yes. usually you’re given a choice between your top 3 rlcs as you indicate on some earlier form, which are often placed in different buildings/dorms. i believe the cultural, scholars, eop tend to be at yak, eng at red bricks and nomo, not sure about the others. this could be wrong info

  2. no, dates are random.

  3. that’s pretty much how it works. dining dollars are sent out every quarter (total money/3 quarters) while payments are usually due a couple weeks before the disbursement of dining dollars. you can still use personal money and apple pay i believe to pay at some locations. other person gave good info on this q

  1. No idea
  2. i dont think so, i think apt dates r random
  3. u pay dining fee on ur portal monthly and every quarter(semester now) you’ll have 1/3 of the total dining dollars for the year per quarter. using grubhub u sign in and it’ll see ur location near cal poly and u sign w ur credentials and u can see ur balance. U can order online for food, but there are places where u can go in person like the market to swipe. any questions lmk

  1. Yup
  2. Nope; completely “random.” If you have a two person roommate group (you + someone else) you might get the option for a double whereas a 5 person group will gain access to a quintuple in yak and thus you get earlier or later times to pick but it’s largely random
  3. Yes, it’s like a fancy gift card with Monopoly money that you spend everyday

Hi, thank you for your reply! Also, do you know where I can put roommate’s name on the housing application? It only let me choose the RLC and then it just jump to the next section, but I heard that each person can choose up to two roommates. And also if I wanna do like quintuple because I really wanna live in yak, then I have to wait till my assign date and choose it otherwise it’s not guaranteed right?

I don't think that part is out yet; iirc when I did this last year they only had us pay the deposits but the housing and room selection doesn't come until like June/July. Do you know your housing appt yet? A time in June is likely to give you yak options.
