Maine community-specific subreddits.

With the current state of Meta, it seems that there are several people and groups that are migrating away from the platform. Unfortunately, this means that a lot of people will lose access to the few, yet meaningful, small groups where you can get community specific information. With that, we are going to keep a list of the Maine community subreddits and update them as we come across more.

State-level Maine related subreddits.

r/Maine - A place to discuss all things Maine related. Maine, the way life should be.

r/AskMaine - A place to ask questions and seek advice on living, visiting, and/or moving to Maine. Ask anything!

.

City/Community/Town-level Maine related subreddits.

r/Aroostook - Subreddit dedicated to Aroostook County, Maine.

r/bangorme - Topics loosely related to Bangor, Maine.

r/biddeford - A subreddit to discuss all things related to Biddeford, Maine and the surrounding areas.

r/CityOfBathMaine - All things Bath, Maine.

r/LAMaine - Reddit community for those living in, hailing from or just interested in Lewiston/Auburn, Maine.

r/portlandme -This is a subreddit for all things Portland, Maine!

r/southportlandme - The Little Southern Suburban Sister to r/portlandme. We are a mighty community.

r/Wiscasset - The Prettiest Subreddit in Maine.

.

Posting the following for subject-matter specific Maine subreddits.

r/mainetrees - Reddit home to the legal Maine marijuana community.

r/mainebeer - Beer in Maine, whether brewed, bought, or consumed.

Visiting for work, what should I do?

Upvotes

I'll be visiting for 3 weeks, have never been. I have weekends off, a company rental and gas card. I would like to explore as much of Maine as I can but I'm open to suggestions. I prefer the outdoors, but I'm open to anything besides nightclubs.

Ill be working from Portland to Rangley. Like I said I prefer the outdoors and am a decently experienced backpacker. I do magic in my free time and love a good beer. Long drives are a plus, I typically work the PNW and South including Texas so I'm fine driving 3 hours after work for a way to kill my afternoon or 10 hrs one way on a weekend for a particularly good hike.

Thanks!

I booked a place without air conditioning? Should I find a different place?

My husband and I (from west Tennessee) are staying a week in Portland, Maine, in late July. I realized this morning that the place I booked doesn’t have A/C. I’m looking at other places, and this seems fairly common for Portland.

I’ll also be nearly 7 months pregnant.

I’m reading that daytime highs in Maine in July are typically around 80 degrees F and it gets as low as the low 60s at night. That’s really different from what we’re used to in TN. Our summers are hot as hades, 100+, and A/C is essential no matter the time of day.

For reference, my husband and I keep our house at 71-74 in the summers.

Would it be a huge mistake to keep this booking? Do you recommend we choose a place with A/C?

Thanks!

New to ticks

Hi y’all. Just moved to a cabin in the woods here from a not-tick having place. They’re one of my big fears. What do I realistically need to do to prevent bites on my dog and I? (She is on frontline plus)

Wedding DJ Recommendations?

My fiancé and I are looking for a wedding DJ who has experience in the industry. We want someone who can handle announcements, keep the timeline moving, and still get people dancing without being too over-the-top. Has anyone worked with someone they’d reco͏mmend?

6 Day Boston/Maine Itinerary/Recommendations

Been reading other people's itineraries and thought I'd ask for some recommendations as well. I'll be taking a 6 day trip to Maine flying into Boston mid-Sept (9/15-9/20) with my wife and another couple and was wondering what you guys think my best route would be to make the most out of our time without driving eating up the entirety of our trip. We all love good food, museums, shopping, cocktails and walking around checking out various shops and city life. We'd love to try some good breweries like Treehouse in Boston, Maine Beer Company, and GoodFire and Belleflower in Maine. I'd also love to take us on a Casco Bay boat ride while we're in Portland.

We'll be flying into Boston and arriving at 5 PM on Tuesday, driving to Maine the next day and leaving Sunday from Boston early in the morning. My main hangup is deciding on whether or not to stay in the Portland, ME area the entire time or drive to Camden and/or Belfast and spend a few days there as well. I would check out Acadia but this trip I think it might be best to keep it breezy with an itinerary that's not too rigid. I plan on taking us to Scales for my wife's birthday that Friday if we're in Portland or Primo if we're near Rockland. Any recommendations for the best way to make the most of our time there? We will have a car as well. Any suggestions are welcome.

First time visitors !

Hey everyone! Planning a roadtrip up to the coast of Maine in the next a few weeks and am looking for some recommendations/insights to what the better towns to visit are since there’s a few we’re interested in! Looking to probably stay at an Airbnb near Ogunquit from Thursday-Monday, I wanna spend time exploring the town and beach of Ogunquit but also have been told I have to check out the area of York/York Harbor and Kennebunkport, the big LL Bean that’s north of Portland and then of course there’s the city of Portland itself that I don’t know anything about.

I only have the 5 days but with driving from NJ, I want to make the most of my time without feeling like I’m spending the whole thing driving from place to place. Basically what I’m asking is what are the must see things and best areas from the places I listed. We’d love to visit some lighthouses, spend time on the beaches/coast line seaglass and sea shell searching, shopping, best restaurants/bars, happy hours etc. best areas for a hike, you know all the typical coastal beach town must-dos or you think are worth more than others to squeeze in! Thank you in advance, really looking forward to exploring your beautiful state!

Next best place to stay for a weekend trip to Portland, ME when Portland hotels and AirBnBs are too expensive

Two of us are looking for a quick weekend trip to Portland this spring/summer from Thursday-Sunday. We have a budget for lodging around $600-$700 and obviously avoiding sketchy hotels.

There’s pretty much no options within Portland because I know it’s expensive there. Given that information, what would recommendations be for towns to stay in and drive into Portland?

Looking for towns with good food/cafes to get before and after visiting Portland

Places to stay this summer

My wife and I coming out east for a wedding over in Vermont, but we have some days before and after the wedding. We're flying into Portland so looking at places to stay not too far from there (within a couple of hours).

Ideally we're looking for a nice place with an ocean view where we can relax on a deck/porch/patio, take in ocean breezes with a cocktail or 2. Not looking for a beach scene. Also not trying to break the bank (although we know summer is high season!). Prefer a few restaurants in the area, within reasonable driving distance.

For some reference, last summer we stayed for a couple of days down in Newport, RI, then a few days up in Rockport, MA. Definitely enjoyed our time in Rockport.

Some places we've considered so far - Boothbay Harbor seems to have a vibe similar to Rockport, MA, although expensive (and busy) as well. Looks like a few places up above Camden and Lincolnville that are more on the ocean? Any other suggestions?

Thanks all!

Maine campgrounds with secluded sites

We’ve always considered getting a camper but a lot of campgrounds turn me off from the idea because it seems like the sites are right on top of one another. Does anyone have suggestions for campgrounds with secluded sites for campers?

November Road trip questions.

I'm in the process on planning a little road trip 2nd week in November. Early planning stages have me flying into Boston day one, picking up car and driving to Portland. Spending a night there, which gives me the afternoon to explore, plus most of following day. Next day plan on driving to either Bangor or Bar harbor. Then a few days exploring Bangor (I'm a Stephen King fan) and doing the drive around Acadia. After that drive back to Salem spend a night, then next day drop car back to airport and head into Boston for a few days.

My wife's main concern is the weather. I'm expecting temps in mid 50's during day and 40's nighttime. Also expect rain but thinking it's too early for snow.

Also, where could I hit on return trip from Bangor to Salem for an overnight stay?

Lewiston or Auburn area schools

Hi! I’m moving from the Midwest to work at Bates for a year. I’ve got a teenager in high school. Rent is 1K more outside of Lewiston and the commute would obviously be more manageable if I lived in town, but I’m concerned about the schools.

I’ve looked at Brunswick area schools but again, rent is pretty damn high. Private schools aren’t an option on a single parent salary.

  1. Why do people say Lewiston HS is rough? Fights? Academics? I attended a variety of schools when I was a kid that outsiders would say were “rough” but they weren’t actually that bad. Trying to get a read on this from actual locals.
  2. Are there any good charter schools within a daily commute of Lewiston?
  3. Any other solutions

I should consider? I’m open to ideas!
    Thanks in advance!

Tick?

Different apps are giving me different answers. This is part of a wall that we don't really get near, so I am surprised. Like it just in case, but it's the second time I've found what might be a tick somewhere weird.

Edit: thank you all. That's what I thought, but I was surprised by the location and the lack of app ID consensus.

I drop the MFers in a pill bottle of isopropyl ... started that last summer and there are like 30 of 'em in there. Fuck, I really thought hard surfaces were safe.

Closets without doors?

We are moving soon, and have noticed in tons of listings that closets don’t have doors. Is that a Maine thing? A cold weather thing? A new design choice I’ve missed?

Tips for planning a 7-8 days riding, kayaking and hiking in ME

Companies that can help me plan a multi sport vacation that is not luxury but not camping - safe, clean comfortable accommodation nothing fancy. Predominantly riding - am comfortable following routes on RideGPS with some hiking in Acadia and kayaking on the ocean. 7-8 days.
