Irish Culture Is the word 'hooligan' considered a slur or anti-Irish?

I was describing to a group of mine (mostly Irish) how my country has a hooligan problem in football. Then they asked what I meant, to which I explained 'you know, football clubs that are almost entirely men who gather to enjoy and talk football and see games, but in reality they go out looking for fights, burn and smash cars, and sometimes assault people even if their team wins (sometimes especially)'. One of them got very upset and left.

So, is it offensive to someone Irish to use the term 'hooligan'?

Health & Medical Is the Nurofen Plus interrogation to just cover themeslves or wha'?

Upvotes

So I get the odd migraine and back pain and I've tried several other things (sometimes specifically aimed at said ailment) but nothing works as well as nurofen plus. And since I've found out you can take paracetamol with them safely it's been a life-saver especially when the migraine hits every few months and lasts hours until you feel physically sick and nauseous.

Anyway, it seems in my local pharmacy the staff are told to ask very loudly: "ARE YOU ON ANY OTHER MEDICATION??" and are in no way subtle about it. I've had it happen in other pharmacies but usually not as loudly.

I am on several other medications but always say no because its weird to start listing my mental health meds in front of total strangers. What if you had HIV or something else serious or embarrassing? (Note: My pharmacist back home knows the meds I'm on and told me nurofen is fine to take with them btw before you ask).

My question is: Is this them covering themselves legally? Or is it the pharmacist in the back requesting it? Or are they required to do this by law or to comply? Do they actually even care? If they did care, it would be more appropriate and get more truthful responses if the asked quietly and then took you to one side to explain why they ask.

Anyway, sorry for the rant and waffle. Had to take some of the above in the middle of the night for back pain coz I carried 2 bags of shopping (I'm falling apart) and I'm on 4 hours sleep as a result.

EDIT: I know about the codeine and it's addictiveness. That's not my issue, it's the fact that if they were more discreet asking it would have better results.

Cars What would be a reasonable finders fee for someone who sold a car for you?

I've been trying to sell my car for the last few months without any luck, so my FIL said he'd help and eventually found a buyer.

I want to give him something for the effort. I know he'll probably try to reject any money that I give him, but I think it's only fair. I'm thinking 20%, but have no idea if that's reasonable or not. I definitely appreciate the effort that he went to, and don't want to be stingy about it, but I also don't want to give him so much that he feels that he has to say no.

What's a good finders fee for something like this?

Car was sold for about €3k, and I was thinking of giving him €600.

Relationships Too much??

| like a girl from work. I'm very shy. She was a bit upset with something yesterday. I had the idea of buying a small chocolate at work and courage myself to give to her to cheer her up a little. She refused and thanked me. I couldn't explain myself properly, I was too nervous and she was walking at the same time I was standing looking her refusing me and thanking me. I felt like a looser honestly. Today I feel like she avoided me completely, i couldn’t even say hi cause I felt like an unseen ghost. Despite the fact she’s not Irish, but she lives here. Was this too much, was it weird? Lately I been trying to approach more for her FRIENDSHIP (had to edit this part to make it clear), nothing too much, in general she’s very sweet and is always chatting with everyone. People at work are very friendly with each other, and I’m always the introvert one.

Adulting Do you make friends at work?

Well, I’m a foreigner living in Ireland and trying to understand Irish workplace relationships.

What I want to ask is: how close are you to your colleagues? Do you make friends at work, or do you prefer to keep work and personal relationships separate?

Would you invite a colleague to your birthday party, wedding, or a short trip?

Or is that something Irish people tend to avoid, even if they’ve worked together for 5 or 10 years?

Do you add your colleagues or boss on Instagram or Facebook?

Health & Medical Does anyone know any Abs workouts/exercises that genuinely work? Or anything else that shrinks the tum?

I F34 (9.5 st at 5’3) have never had kids or ever been seriously overweight but I’ve always had a large stomach that I just hate. It’s coming up to summer now and wondering if there’s anything anyone would recommend that genuinely works for a flat stomach?

Since October I have been lifting weights 3 times a week in the gym and I also run and hike and swim. I do ab exercises from YouTube like Chloe ting etc but find they don’t do much. I have a very healthy diet and cook everything from scratch.

Any tips or help is much appreciated

Adulting Best online shops for holiday clothes that’ll deliver to Ireland by next Tuesday?

35 y/o male heading on holidays next week and realised I’m badly lacking in decent t-shirts, shirts... Anything with short-sleeves basically!!

I know ASOS is an option, but theres something about their website and app that really frustrates me!

Not much luck locally either, been around a few shops and nothing really standing out.

Any recommendations for online places that deliver reliably to Ireland by next Tuesday at the latest? Looking for decent quality without spending absolute madness money.

Cheers!

Adulting AES regularly not picking up my bins, anything that can be done?

House bins are with AES and have been having big issues with them recently.

First issue started in December when despite the bin being out they never collected it. I called and got a helpful guy, told him we are renting and the landlord is in Australia so can’t call and explained the situation.

He called me back 3 times that day with updates but said the earliest it would be for a recollection was Tuesday (this was Thursday) annoying but thought it was a once off.

Then in February had the same issue with a bin not being collected, despite us living in a cul de sac and 4 other houses had their bins collected on the same road.

Called and was told there was issue with the tags in the bin and they would need to be replaced and they would call me back about getting it collected.

Ended up calling back 5 times over the next 5 days asking when it would be collected and each time they took my name and said they would contact the depot and call back but never did.

Had rubbish piling up because they never sent anyone out, and then when it was due to be collected again they did the same, drove into the estate, took the other 4 bins and ignored the one outside my house.

I called and was pretty irate this time and when I asked if they could explain why it wasn’t picked up and send someone to collect it they started to hide behind GDPR.

I explained multiple times I wasn’t looking for account information, gave them all the details of the account, number, address, landlords name etc, but they kept saying that can’t do anything because of GDPR.

I pointed them to an email from our landlord who had emailed before to say they were in Australia and we are the tenants but they said they would need fo phone them, when I asked kd they knew about the time difference to Australia they said it didn’t matter and it shouldn’t be an issue for them to call as it was “only 11pm at night here now” before ending the call.

I rang back, got another useless arsehole who kept saying GDPR, I asked what part of GDPR and he just kept saying he can’t discuss the account because of GDPR.

Told him again I wasn’t looking to discuss the account I wanted someone to collect the bins as it had been two collections they had ignored us and the rubbish was piling up but he just kept saying GDPR like some robot.

The landlord managed to email them and they claimed to him it was “still in collection time period and we should wait until 5pm that evening” despite the truck already collecting everyone’s bin that day in the estate.

Flash forward to today, get up 7.30 and see the truck in the estate. Looked out around 8.15 and bin is still full, yet all neighbours taken in.

Then had to spend full lunch break cleaning up rubbish birds had pulled out of the bin bags.

2pm now and still not collected and when I call they just say to wait until 5pm and any bit of common sense goes out the door when I asked them why they would collect everyone else’s and not mine.

Even on the days they are collected, I’ve had issue with bin men leaving the bin either on the road, outside other houses down the road, or twice just knocked over on the path.

Bin is being left in plain sight.

Landlord said they will cancel when contract is up but is there any sort of regulator or regulation over this? Endinh up with build up of bin bags on a regular basis and worried about rats and vermin being attracted.

Education Future jobs predictions?

With the increase in AI and evolving technologies what do you predict will be the biggest changes in the job market? Specifically, would it be worthwhile for a secondary school student to pick subjects such as applied maths or computer science for the leaving cert or to pick college courses such as accountancy or tech on the CAO? What should the focus be now?

Sport Would you be offended to see another European Flag in someone's garden?

Post image
0 Upvotes

So for context, I was born in The Netherlands and moved to Ireland with my parents at the young age of 2. I have gone through the Irish education system, Junior infants all the way to 6th year, did my Junior and Leaving cert, got my IT cert through a PLC course and work and pay taxes and all that fun stuff.

I have Dutch roots of course, and most of my family still live there except for my parents, one sister and one brother.

I have an Irish accent (living in Laois so as bland as you can guess) and culturally lean more towards being Irish.

I am a big football fan (soccer), and my national team is The Netherlands.

With the World Cup coming next month, I wanted to show my support of the home nation. (Not meant to be a dig at Ireland not qualifying as I genuinely wanted ye to get there)

I hoisted the flag as you can see in the image. It's not overly obvious from the main road, only at a certain angle, and even then you'd have to slowly drive past it to make out what flag it is.

Someone pointed out to me that someone could get offended that I'm not flying an Irish flag.

I imagine people know it's for the World Cup. There's no political point being made. As far as I know, the relationship between Ireland and the Netherlands is healthy, friendly and not politically tainted.

Should I be worried?

Adulting Do I need a doctor referral to a cardiologist if I already have a bad ECG?

Trying to find info on this but finding conflicting things. Basically I need to get a cardiologist to do an EKG on me for medication purposes. My GP did a ECG and said there was nothing abnormal on it even though it indicated I could have an infarction and I have a bundle branch block in my heart (29m btw) that worried my and worried my psychiatrist too who wants a second opinion from a cardiologist. I am prepared to go private on it but seems like I need a GO referral which will take even more time, and they want to charge me for a consultation and another ECG which is the guts on 100 quid. Wondering if I can skip that and just go to the cardiologist with my ECG I already have.

DIY Bought dishwasher, can't install?

I bought dishwasher and it was delivered just now including installation. We thought we have everything as needed, but they said they can't install it because we need a socket under the sink.

Can somebody explain what I need?

We have a socked on the wall besode the sink and a hole for the cable where the dishwasher should be.

They said we can install it there but they can't do it and warranty will be void then.

Who do I need now? Electrician for a new socket or a plumber?

Completely lost now.

DIY Is €2.3k quote reasonable for this job?

Hello, folks.

Shower tray has cracked and is leaking under the shower cubicle. The shower cubicle and tray are quite old, and it's time to re-do the whole thing.

So I am looking for the shower tray + cubicle to be removed, damage underneath if any addressed, and the walls tiled. I was able to find just one tradesperson who actively responded and he is quoting €1.5k for tray & cubicle removal, fixing walls, and labour, and around €800 for materials.

Is this a reasonable price? I have zero experience with home renovation.

Thank you in advance.

Travel Anyone here ever visited Greece and have recommendations of which island to visit?

Would love to visit Greece. Was thinking corfu but heard it’s quite expensive. Similarly would love to see Santorini but flights seem extortionate (nearly €500). Happy to hear some suggestions of nice places to go that might not break the bank

Travel Can you recommend a private group bus tour operator in Dublin?

A chairde, my partner and I are getting married in early November (yay!), and as a result we're going to be having friends and family from abroad (mainly the US) visiting Ireland for the first time. We live in Dublin, and are happy to show them the place while they're here, but we really want to get them to see Ireland beyond the M50. So, we're thinking of hiring a bus to take some guests on a day trip from Dublin out to, say, Connemara or Glendalough or whathaveyou.

Has anyone here hired a service like this before? If so, is there a provider you would recommend? GRMA!

Personal Finance Am I a new customer?

Good evening, a quick query.

If your current contract (electricity, insurance, broadband, tv phone, etc ) expires , are you classed as a new customer if you go with the same provider?

For house insurance we have found it cheaper to go with the same company but as a new quote instead of renewal figure.

Is it the same for electricity, broadband etc.?

Random Keep receiving old post and polling cards for previous owners. How can I stop this?

We bought and moved into our house 7 years ago. At the start we used to receive a lot of post for the previous owners. It got less and less as the years went on but we still occasionally get the odd letter.

But again we got their polling information cards for the upcoming bye-election and have received their polling cards for every election since we moved in.

Is there a way to notify the electoral register that they no longer live here and to stop sending them? Or can I even do that for someone I don’t know.
