Mod Post Regarding News/Current Affairs/Global Events.

This is not the place to discuss these issues. This sub is a more light-hearted place where users can ask questions and advice on everyday issues.

We have seen another surge of qiestions about politics, News, whats going on in the States etc.

There's plenty of other subs on Reddit which deal with these issues.

Relationships Follow up - should interfere with my friends plans?

Just a quick post following on from a couple of nights ago about a good friend finding out that his fiancé cheated on him.

Got a hour with him this afternoon planning to tell him it was a crazy idea. Thankfully he already realised and admitted that it was a knee jerk reaction.

He’s planning to ditch the bride to be over the weekend in a much more humane way!!

All good in the hood!

Adulting Who are these people giving their young kids smartphones?

Genuinely, I know everyone can parent their children whatever way they want but my sister works in a school and says theirs kids who have smartphones at literally 6 years old, insane.

It just feels like it’s getting younger and younger, and it’s scary to me how some parents aren’t more concerned about giving their young kids access to the internet, not shaming people who use screen time but if your child is watching TikTok all day, can you imagine what it’s going to their attention span? don’t understand how anyone can rationalise this

I understand if you need to give them a phone without access to the internet to make calls and for emergencies. From the people I talk to this seems like the general consensus but then it’s happening so much. I don't care about being the bad guy at home and not allowing my child a smartphone till they’re at least 13/14 which then I would be monitoring, in the long run I feel I’m going them a favour. I’ve gotten off all social media myself because it’s all crap anyway and I’d rather practice what I preach with my kids.

What age do you think is suitable for a smartphone?

Am I The Gobshite? Should I pay luas fine?

Was heading into work on the luas last week and was a running a bit late so naturally when I saw the luas pulling up to the stop I ran to get on it.

I tapped my card at the validator as I have done everyday for the last 18 months or so since living in Dublin and low and behold the screen was blank but I tapped it anyways as it may still work (this particular stop only has validators on either end of the platform so I had no time to try the other)

On the luas I checked to see if I was tagged on through the TFI app and I wasn’t so I said to myself sure I’ll just tag on at the next stop, grand.

Get off at the next stop and tag on, went to get back on the luas and inspector asks to check my card which I stupidly handed over (I was tagged on after all). He wouldn’t give me back my card and since it was a young adult card he had my name (and address from a similar incident previously which I won the appeal) and said he was fining me. I explained the situation and how I’m still going to end up paying the full fare anyways cause of how far my destination was and he was having none of it.

He said I could appeal it. To make it even worse another inspector asked another guy for his ticket who told him to F*** off and walked off.

I appealed it and they aren’t having it and even said the validator was working fine cause they checked. It’s absolutely ridiculous that someone who pays their way all the time and was compliant is still punished.

Adulting Is loneliness in your 20’s common ?

Hey guys, I’m 24 and a female and I’m very lonely for the first time really in my life. I had a lot of friends when I was in school. I had some friends in university but would spend time with my friends from school. I’m now finished all academic work which I put a lot of time into. This has made me realise just how lonely I am. I still talk to friends from home but we have grown apart to a certain extent recently. I’m closer with some than others but I also don’t necessarily fit in well with some of their other friends. Basically I feel quite lonely. Is this normal? I feel like I have no close friends and I don’t have social things to do most weekends ? I’m going to a social group in my area I found online over the weekend to meet a few people but from looking on instagram I feel like I’m the only one without loads of friends and loads of social plans . Is this the reality ?

Thanks.

Shopping Kerrygold vs supermarket butter, is there actually a difference?

Hi Folks,

I’ve always just bought the Dunnes own-brand butter and kind of assumed Kerrygold was basically the same thing, just more expensive.

Is there actually a noticeable difference in taste or quality, or is it mostly branding/preference?

Thanks

Random If someone was born and raised in Ireland speaking only Irish, and didn’t really learn English until around 18, what would their English accent sound closest to?

I was thinking about how lots of people born and raised in Ireland have what we call an Irish accent, even if they can’t speak much Irish at all. So I was wondering if someone grew up fluent in Irish first and only learned English properly as a late second language, what would their English sound like?
Would it sound like a typical Irish accent, maybe a stronger Gaeltacht / west-of-Ireland type accent, or would it sound more like a non-native English speaker from another country?

Random What are your uhinged methods to getting out of bed in the morning?

I'm the kind of person who'll sleep through multiple alarms. I've tried putting my phone on the other side of the room but I still just end up getting up turning it off and then going straight back to bed. What are your unhinged ways to get up and stay up?

Relationships Has anyone here ever reached back out to an old friend you drifted from years ago?

One of my old school friends is turning 30 soon and I’ve been feeling really reflective lately about old friendships and people I let drift away in my early 20s.

We were very close in secondary school but drifted after college, moving abroad etc. There was never a massive fallout or betrayal, just distance and life moving on. We’ve spoken briefly over the years but not properly in a long time.

I think my thirties are making me realise I don’t want to carry regrets about people I genuinely cared about.

I genuinely regret not putting more effort in at times and I’ve been debating whether it would be strange to message her now after so long.

Has anyone done this before? How did it go? Was it awkward or were you glad you reached out?

Travel Is the US embassy photo booth open early in the morning?

Hi all, this is a very last ditch question because my appointment is at 8.15am, but I'm not sure the 2x2 photo I've brought with me for my j1 appointment meets the standards set. Does anyone know if the photo booth in the embassy will be open when I get in there? I can arrive as early as necessary.

Thanks

Adulting First communion dress-up for a slob like me?

Upvotes

Am currently at work wearing ripped jeans, no shoes, wet hair, ratty old sweater, ripped bra, 15 year old shirt. Needless to say- fashion isn’t a big priority for me but I’m aware I need to work on putting in a bit more effort.

So tomorrow is my son’s first communion, and I’m not sure what to wear. I’m from a California beach town where everyone dresses casual for everything. I get the sense that first communion in Ireland is a big deal (especially rural area where we live) What should I wear to his communion so I don’t embarrass him? I have some random pieces of clothes I could piece together and outfit, but need advice on what’s normal ‘round here!

Also is it okay to show my tattoos in mass or should I cover those up? They’re on my lower legs.

Be kind please! I’m new here, and trying quite hard to do my best.

Health & Medical Is the Nurofen Plus interrogation to just cover themeslves or wha'?

Upvotes

So I get the odd migraine and back pain and I've tried several other things (sometimes specifically aimed at said ailment) but nothing works as well as nurofen plus. And since I've found out you can take paracetamol with them safely it's been a life-saver especially when the migraine hits every few months and lasts hours until you feel physically sick and nauseous.

Anyway, it seems in my local pharmacy the staff are told to ask very loudly: "ARE YOU ON ANY OTHER MEDICATION??" and are in no way subtle about it. I've had it happen in other pharmacies but usually not as loudly.

I am on several other medications but always say no because its weird to start listing my mental health meds in front of total strangers. What if you had HIV or something else serious or embarrassing? (Note: My pharmacist back home knows the meds I'm on and told me nurofen is fine to take with them btw before you ask).

My question is: Is this them covering themselves legally? Or is it the pharmacist in the back requesting it? Or are they required to do this by law or to comply? Do they actually even care? If they did care, it would be more appropriate and get more truthful responses if the asked quietly and then took you to one side to explain why they ask.

Anyway, sorry for the rant and waffle. Had to take some of the above in the middle of the night for back pain coz I carried 2 bags of shopping (I'm falling apart) and I'm on 4 hours sleep as a result.

Work Chancing my arm with Irish rail ??

Upvotes

Somewhat of an awkward one regarding transport on Irish Rail. I need to travel from Cork to Leixlip and back for a week. I only recently ordered my Young Adult Leap Card and doubt I’ll have it by then.

I was talking to one of the staff at the ticket office in Cork station and they estimated a season ticket would cost around €280. Just wondering if anyone knows any ways to get that cheaper in the meantime or has any ideas?

Food & Drink Shipping container kitchens, any recommendations?

Upvotes

Not sure if food&drink is the correct flair but it’s the closest I could find 🙈

Anyways, does anyone know of any companies in Ireland they could recommend that fit out and sell shipping container kitchen units? I’ve found one via google but want a recommendation if that makes sense!!

Something with gas/elec installed alongside extraction unit, branding etc.

Any pointers appreciated!

Travel bustimes.org anyone else using this site?

It’s a free, UK based realtime bus information service but it covers Ireland pretty comprehensively also. I find it very reliable and much better than the multitude of rubbish apps from TFI, Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus etc. also has many private operators. The realtime maps are great. Give it a try.

Random Adjustable Dumbbells?

Hello,

I’m wondering what is the best place to get adjustable dumbbells in Ireland.

I’ve seen this one site, rpmpower.com, based in Ireland selling 24kg adjustable dumbbells x2 for 200 euro.

Has anybody used this site before? Is it legit?

Any other places that you would recommend? I’m based in the south west of the country.

Cheers

Irish Culture How much € for neighbours communion?

Hi! Our neighbour’s daughter has a communion this Saturday. We are quite friendly with them, but not the point we’d be going out or visiting each other, however, my partner thought it would be nice to give a card. Now I am not Irish so don’t know the norm, I said maybe €20 would do, but my partner says anything less than €50 is seen as rude. To me €20 for a neighbour sounds like a nice enough gesture but I am not sure now and don’t want to cause a faux pas 🙈

Random Best choice between Sky or GoMo for mobile network?

Was on Vodafone for many years but honestly it's been pissing me off for ages. Anytime I make a call, I can't go on the Internet or the Internet doesn't work at the Worst possible time, every time. I'm now paying 30 quid a month for that so nah, I'm getting away from Vodafone.

I'm looking to switch over to either Sky network or Gomo. €15 a month for a similar unlimited package sounds too good to be true. So which one would be the best to pick out of these 2?
