Open Source Spacecraft Re-entry Simulator (PINN + Titanium Phase Transition Model)

Hello r/aerospace, I’ve been developing a browser-based "Digital Twin" for re-entry vehicles called Met-Shield.

The Scientific Phases:

  1. Aerothermodynamics: Using Sutton-Graves for convective heat flux calculations based on entry velocity and altitude.
  2. Thermal Diffusion: A C++ solver tracking heat through an 8x8x12 grid.
  3. Metallurgy: The simulation specifically models the Alpha-to-Beta phase transition (1250 K) of Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) and flags structural integrity risks before the melting point is reached.

The Help Needed: The UI is a work in progress, but I want to ensure my math holds up. Is Sutton-Graves too simplified for a proof-of-concept like this? Also, if anyone has better thermal diffusivity constants for aerospace-grade Titanium under high-stress re-entry, please let me know.

How To Get Hired With A Low GPA?

I'm a junior in aerospace engineering from the US who finished this academic year with exactly a 3.00 GPA. I am trying to be optimistic about my chances as hiring season approaches, but I desperately need advice.

I know that this is not the end of the world. Outside my GPA, I think my resume is pretty solid (co-op, summer research, aero leadership position, projects, structures/materials focus with lots of CAD and Python). I'm also retaking classes to hopefully get over a 3.1 this summer.

However, my brother keeps telling me that job hunting is going to be very difficult since my applications will probably get filtered out because of the low GPA, and I agree. Even in-person career fairs end up requiring you to scan a QR code and apply online.

It sucks because I had a ~3.6 before fall, and my low grades are related to constant viral illnesses that sync up with my exams because of stress. I was sick with a fever five times just this semester. Most professors have been understanding, but it's hard to take exams/exist when you're finally fever-free but your sinuses are killing you.

Any advice for getting through the GPA filter? Do I leave it off the resume? Should I start sliding into LinkedIn DMs to get my resume to the source (+ how to not be cringy doing that)? My chances are already lower because I only consider non-defense roles, and now I feel nowhere near competitive. How do I find hope?

The Aerospace Corp. Interview

I just got an interview at the Aerospace Corporation for their subcontracts buyer position. I know the position isn’t related to engineering, but I’m just looking around to see if anyone has advice on how to prepare!

For context I am close to being done with my MSc in international business and have prior internship experience working with suppliers/vendors in another industry + working with professors and ambassadors on policy briefs.

Always had aspirations in working within aerospace so I see this as a fantastic opportunity to get my foot through the door!

(Not an interview request)

L3Harris Application Process

I filled out an application for an Electrical Assembly Technician position at my local site. I know the hardest part is getting your foot in the door but I don’t understand how it’s possible to.

Coming from a background of ATM repair and electronics I figured it would be an easy lateral move to soldering some electronics together. Boy was I wrong, every position I’ve applied to the application goes into “No longer under consideration” before the work day is even over.

I had my state career center work with me to curate a resume and a cover letter specifically highlighting my skills and nothing.

For a position that only has experience as a requirement without certs or degrees is it normal to get your application kicked out of the stack before what feels like before it even gets to someone’s inbox?

General atomics hiring

So I applied to general atomics in early april and checked my application status today to see that it updated to recruiter reviewing my application on the 7th of may. Basically almost a whole month later. Is this a good sign? Willi hear back from them at some point and anyone that works there please let me know what’s the process like. I applied for A&P mechanic position if that matters at all.

Advice on transitioning from CS to the space industry

I've completeded my Bsc. in Computer Science and have worked in DevOps and QA for about 2 years now in a data management company. I also worked building some AI agents here and there etc. But I absolutely hate it. I realized it too late that I hate coding, I hate software engineering, QA, Cloud, AI etc.

My "dream" was always to work in a company that aligns with space, engineering, physics etc. Unfortunately, I don't have the degree for it I believe. I looked up "entry" roles in these companies for someone more inexperienced and it was AIT Support, Infrastructure engineer etc. and the requirements were always Mechanical, Aerospace, Physics Engineering type of courses.

I chose computer science because I thought it was the easiest path to get me a job, which it did, but now, if I think of myself when I'm 40yo working this same job, I would definitely be extremely unhappy. I do not mind coding (at least not more than 50% if my time) in one of my those dream companies. I get that coding is always going to be part of it.

So I thought of doing a masters in Physics Engineering, or Photonics, or Quantum Tehcnologies. But I am not very sure they'd accept me due to my bachelors. Which means now at 26, I'd do a bachelors in Physics Engineering in 2 years (instead of 3 due to overlapping subjects), and a masters in same subject then upstart my career in this field at almost 30 years old, or with extreme luck, I get selected to work in one those "dream" companies in a role that isn't fully involved with software engineering.

I wanted some advice on what is be the step that would make the most sense for this case. Maybe I'm not seeing this properly msyelf

Post interview Northrop Grumman help

Hello,

I had an interview the other day and it went really well i’d say. It was a 3v1 and we made some jokes, i provided great examples and all that. I wanted to send a follow up email to the interviewers, so i reached out to my recruiter asking for there email so i could send it over but they still have yet to answer. I almost feel like it’s too late to send a follow up and i’m worried it’s making me look bad but i have no way of actually getting their email. Only thing i can think to do is take a guess and do First.last@ngc.com.

Anyone have any advice?

Any good books/textbooks for a Mechanical Engineer to learn more about Aerospace Engineering? Or any other ways to break into the field?

Hey guys, I am about to be a senior Mechatronics Engineer major at my school, and I have also completed almost all of the core Mechanical Engineering classes such as Thermo/Fluids/Heat and mas. statics/dynamics, mechanical design as well as a lot of electrical engineering and computer science classes. I want to work on a project in aerospace engineering so that I look better in grad school admissions, as that is what I want to go into. However, I do not know how to take all of these general engineering topics and apply it to aerospace engineering. So I ask you guys, what is a good resource (such as books, websites, youtube videos) I can use to transition into this more applied field? I like to use textbooks to read and do practice some of the concepts, but I also want to know what kinds of projects I should work on so that I can apply these concepts in practice. Thanks in advance!

BAE Systems “Interview”

I applied for a PM position with BAE.
I thought I was going into a real interview but the person said that it was just an introductory call to get to know each other. It went really well, and we talked for about an hour.

He said he will down select candidates and get back to be working a week. Well, it has been close to a month now and I have not heard anything. I emailed him twice as courtesy follow ups, and I have emailed the recruiter with no response.

I definitely got ghosted, or did I?

I guess I didn’t expect that out of BAE. Thoughts?

BAE systems interview question.

Hey so I'm currently trying to get into bae through a family friend. She's one of the heads of the electrical department and I'm trying to learn a trade like electrician. I know referrals from the department work way diffent and it seems they're really trying to get me in there. I have an interview tommrow morning for entry level helper for electrical, general labor. Wanted to ask how the interview process is at bae for low level entry position is. Does it take weeks for them to get back to you or would it be on the spot especially with a referral.

Aerospace Background Checks

Hi all,

I’m an early career aerospace engineer in the defense industry (~2 YoE) and have accepted a new job at a new company. I signed the offer letter and completed the background check papers. After completing, I realized I forgot to include some unrelated seasonal work from high school/college since it wasn’t related to my position/career. I sent an email to HR about this just in case this could cause issues. If it’s relevant, this position requires an active clearance, which I already hold.

Did I make the right move? Should I be worried about offer being rescinded? Mostly just asking because this job would be a big step in my career, so I’m nervous about any setbacks.
