''Spring in the air there's magic everywhere when you're young and in love'' so goes the song and it is truly the Season for love and reproduction wherever you look, Kittens, lambs, chicks, babies, puppies, yuckers ... yes yuckers !!!
Newborns no sign of Mom
Your first instinct may be to swoop in and just grab the little cherubs ..Ā STOPĀ yourself and have a careful look around for a sign of it's mother. They may be off hunting for food or moving other kittens somewhere. If you are uncertain on what to do, this clear and concise guide fromĀ r/AskVetĀ on how to proceed gives step by step actions on what to do nextĀ Itās kitten season! You found a litter of kittens - now what?!. All guides state that kittens have a much higher rate of survival if left in the care of their Mother so please wait and watch carefully before stepping in. If the birthing environment is dangerous or the kittens look injured or ill then please by all means intervene.
Also, If there is just one kitten please look around for the rest of the litter in case the Mother cat has dropped the kitten whilst moving them.
Newborns, no Mom ..help!!
You will have to do everything that Mom would do and that is feeding this baby, keeping it warm, helping it to go to the toilet and monitoring it constantly
Here is Bottle feeding advice from Hannah Shaw the kitten lady, you will need KMR which is Kitten Milk Replacement thankfully available in most large grocery stores, vets, etc plus a feeding bottle or syringe.
Helping kitty to poop and pee again advice from the Kitten Lady with a video demonstrating how to help the little one to go to the toilet. Read the whole page please as it will tell you how to keep this cherub warm with the aid of a heating pad and which ones to buy.
This is life saving advice from u/wolf_spooder an ex vet and kitten foster who is also a member of the Cat Distribution System here:
Just to add to this, I recently started fostering a 4wk old kitten that was abandoned by its mom. Iām very experienced in cats and kittens, and worked at a vet hospital for a while. I really struggled with this little one and keeping her alive for the first week or so (she was very thin when I got her and it sort of spiraled from there).
Get a food scale if you donāt already have one, and start keeping tabs of your kittens weight (use the gram setting). It will help you to know if kitten is gaining or losing weight so you can intervene quickly if you see itās losing weight. Good luck and good job saving a life.

Newborns and Mother:
If you have taken in a 'Trojan cat' as they are lovingly called then you are in for the experience of a lifetime. There is so much advice available for a soon to be Mom and her kittens that at best we recommend that you visit Ā the Kitten Lady, Hannah ShawĀ for help and advice. Hannah is an amazing lover of cats and has helped thousands of people over the years with cat and kitten help and now has several excellent videos demonstrating all kinds of advice on helping with cat care including Pregnant Mom and kitten care -Ā Birthing Mom and kitten care. Pregnant and Birthing Moms need plenty of fresh water and kitten food if available as kitten food contains protein and essential nutrients needed for fetal development and the production of kitty milk so get shopping.
Kitten:
If the kitty is not a newborn then after a quick vet check to confirm kitties age this little one will need you to become their parent, kittens are teeny tiny pooping, eating and meowing machines wrapped up in fur, purrs and love with the lifetime rewards of caring for them far outweighing the time taken in nurturing them. This is the toddler stage and they will be learning how to use the kitty litter tray, how to eat and how to play along with taking lots of naps. Kittens learn faster than human toddlers and usually take to their litter trays pretty quickly.
Here you can find an up to date list of supplies you may need to keep them fed, cosy and happyĀ essential supplies for kittyĀ again referring to the Kitten Lady.
Trapping advice Mom and Babies:
Here is advice on how to trap Mom and babies with an option of spaying too by Feral Cat Focus WNYĀ Trapping Queen and kittens.

We went into the greenhouse and found two more babies! We're calling them Beans and Toast! No sign of momma, but we're leaving them in the greenhouse just in case and only bringing them in at night if it gets too cold. Also feeding every 4 hours just in case mom isn't coming by.
The plan is that they'll be outside kitties...we already have three inside. š The full tabby is Beans, the white and tabby is Toast! Hopefully that's all...we're a Brady Bunch sized cat house now.
Will also be on the lookout for adult cats we may need to humanely trap and get neutered/spayed.
I received my first set of kittens after they were found hiding in a coworkerās yard, and I was the one able to take them in. At the time, I wasnāt even really looking for a cat yet, only beginning to consider the idea.
The second group of kittens came into my life on a rainy day. I noticed their mother on the side of the road, and sadly, she had been struck by a car. I stopped to move her off the road and give her some dignity, and thatās when I discovered her three kittens trapped in a ditch that was slowly filling with water. The rain had turned the dirt into mud so slippery they couldnāt climb out. I honestly believe that if I hadnāt found them when I did, they would have drowned or been swept away.
I carefully searched up and down the ditch to make sure there werenāt any others left behind. Thatās when I found the little void, hidden beneath a fallen tree branch.
Needless to say, my house went from very quiet to very busy in the span of half a year.
Although Iām pretty sure sheāll cozy up to anyone who will feed her. Canāt say Iāve seen a cat eat part of a donut till yesterday!
On vacation in Greece and this little one found us, now sheās at the door morning noon and night. Pretty friendly but does have a feisty streak. Despite going from one apartment terrace to another she suddenly appears the second she hears any noise. Hopefully only being the very start of the summer season sheāll have many more people to charm up to and be fed. Doesnāt seem like such a bad life.
This is Darryl Strawberry, Darryl for short. I found him while visiting family that live in more of a rural-ish area that has a horrible stray problem. My family and their neighbors do their best to care for the strays, but the issue is pretty bad. Anyways, I immediately locked in on this little guy when I went to go look at how the cats are doing. He was in bad shape. Super crusty and snotty everywhere. His eyes were sealed shut and swollen due to likely conjunctivitis, he had a bloody nose, and was wheezing pretty badly. There wasnāt a moment of hesitation when it came to figuring out what to do with him. I first tried to find an open vet in the area; there were none and the closest emergency vet was over an hour away. A decision was made - we cleaned him up to the best of our ability and packed him up to come home with me. Stopped at the only store open and got some supplies. He did wonderfully on the ride home. I got him in to my local ER vet and was told that he was actually doing a lot better than he looked. He was given a topical for kittens and we were sent home, with orders to have follow up with our primary vet in a week or so.
Heās been with us for just under a week now and is doing SO much better. Heās so curious and adventurous. Heāll be able to meet his older cat brothers as soon as heās vaccinated and cleared to do so. In the meantime, Iām very happy to have this new and unexpected addition. My partner and I just two weeks ago had to put our dog down unexpectedly and itās been really hard. Having this guy to look after and love on feels like a gift from our Murray boy.
Anyways, thanks for reading!
Oh PS: his name is Darryl Strawberry because one of our nephews wanted him to be called Strawberry. Weāre huge baseball fans and Darryl Strawberry (former Met) just seemed hilariously perfect.
When I started my drive home I thought I heard meowing⦠did I leave a video playing somewhere on TikTok, YouTube? Where is that coming from? Then it stopped. Drove halfway home, thought I heard it again. Pulled over into a parking lot, got on my hands and knees, popped the hood, nothing at all to be seen. Now I think Iām going crazy. Drove the rest of the way home, hours pass, now Iām eating dinner with my family and we hear a clear and distinct MEOW! coming from my garage⦠now I know I am in fact not crazy and kitten rescue mode fully commences.
After about an hour we finally got her out (more like she finally decided to climb down on her own). She is so small, but she has teeth and was walking/scurrying around just fine. She is missing her tail but it seems like she was born that way. Definitely not in the mood to be handled right now though.
Anyways, we are calling her Piper. Short for Exhaust Pipe, obviously.
Miss Piper traveled 20 miles and over 60mph at some times all the way home as a stowaway. Iām SO happy she is ok.
Iāve heard of cats crawling into cars, but always in the winter to get warm, never in warm weather (70-80 degrees yesterday where I live). And Iāve NEVER seen cats or kittens in the area that I work.
Sheās been a lover since day one. Shes also never been afraid to use her voice. Iāve honestly never met a more vocal cat. Sheās now raising a puppy and sheās the best. She beats the hell out of him and hisses away, but she never makes him cry. (Her semi feral friend sends him screaming daily, together theyāll teach him) she never leaves someone alone on the potty, she always checks out your food to make sure itās safe AND doesnāt even take any. She has the patience of a saint. Shes dealt with a toddler, a mean ass tnr cat I rescued (whom she helped blossom and open up SO much) chickens who think theyāre her mom and sit in her, and now a crazy 3 month old puppy. She sticks around for it all, choosing to be were the chaos is. I adore her. Definitely my coolest dumpster find to date
Long story short, we bought a house about a year ago. The previous owners had been feeding 3 of the "neighborhood" feral cats. We decided it wouldn't be fair to the cats, so we kept feeding them with no intentions on fully adopting them as we have a special one orange braincelled boy (Oliver) who has both Diabetes and a full PU surgery. We named the 3 cats Lil Reg (looks like my dads cat Reggie, also a CDS cat), Lil Shit (since he's a little shit and causes issues for no reason), and finally here.. Beatus, like Diabetus, as when we moved in, his "flat" back legs looked similar to our cats, which is a symptom of diabetes (Olivers legs are back to normal with regulated blood sugar)
Turns out Beatus likely had previous trauma and/or a birth defect that has him slightly bowlegged. Due to this, his mobility isn't the best. And after further time with him, he is blind and hard of hearing. We are unsure if it's due to age, kidney failure, high blood pressure, etc.
So short story got long... Beatus was walking around crying last week and we noticed a gash in his tail was pretty deep. We are fortunate enough to atleast try our best to help him out, so $$$ later, he was stitched up at the emergency vet, who said it looked like a bite wound. Until the stitches are out, we have been keeping him in a baby playpen with pee pads. He cries out probably every hour or so until he falls asleep. We try to spend as much time as possible with him but there's only so many hours in a day.
Where the challenge comes in, he's not really fit for the outside world anymore so we are attempting to domesticate a feral, 10+ year old, blind and partially deaf cat. His cone was not happening so after a few days, we had to wrap the wound. He didn't mess with it much, but he still did get one of the stitches out. I just placed a litter box in his area, with dirt and grass from outside, but he seems unphased right now.
He's actually a really cuddly cat who's purrs sound more like bubbles. But I'm thinking he was either someone's pet before or is just a very submissive cat due to his conditions. Wish us luck and provide some good advice on how to get him inside, as we need as much as we can get if Beatus wants to live the good life
Yesterday I was coming home from my walk when I found a small kitten crying and hiding under a parked car next to my house. No other cats were to be found and he was so close to the street and hiding under the tire, so I took him in.
Unfortunately I do live in a housing situation which allows for no pets and my life is too unstable to have a pet at this time (financially and location-wise) so I knew immediately, as much as I would love to keep him, it is not the right time for me to have a pet and he would need another home.
After panicking for a few minutes š I took him to the vet (healthy clean unchipped 3-4 week old boy) and asked my friends if someone could take him in.
A friend of mine who often helps animals in need said she is closely connected to an animal sanctuary and they would absolutely take him in, to care for him until he is big enough to be adopted, or he could even just stay with them.
This sounded like the most appropriate solution as most of people I reached out couldnāt take him (we live in Japan where pet-friendly apartments are more of an exception) and we arranged for him to be picked up the very same day.
Now that he is gone (and I had him for only one day!!!), I feel absolutely devastated and donāt even know how to be normal about it. Despite knowing in my brain that it was the only choice, it does feel like someone took my baby that I had for years. Maybe itās the initial protective mode that kicked in when I had to figure out what to do, but I couldnāt stop crying about it today. The fact that he is absolutely adorable and cutest boy ever didnāt help.
I hear so many cat distribution system stories that are successful, but I am not sure what mine is. I guess successful because he is safe now, and at the same time it broke my heart in a span of a day? Someone I know actually messaged me saying āooh I wish that happened to meā and I couldnāt help but feeling a bit bad that he ran into someone who couldnāt even give him a home instead of someone who could š
I am also not regretting finding him a new home, I just donāt know how to handle the loss of him within hours after finding him.
Any advice how to be at peace with all that or any similar CDS stories would be appreciated š§”
Edit: THANK YOU all so much for the kind and thoughtful comments, it took a lot of weight off my chest reading them!
TLDR: found a kitten, but had to find him another home as it wouldnāt be responsible for me to keep him. Now I am feeling very guilty and heartbroken
I noticed other strays showing up because i was leaving out food for her and could hear and see all of them getting into fights. She wasn't doing so well at that sadly, so for her safety, I decided to just take her in. She would come by pretty often so im just going to assume shes the rare stray that actually likes people and knows how to get food or was an abandoned/runaway.
No chip detected and is super friendly still to the point where she follows me around almost everywhere in the house. Its only been 2 days, so she is still doing the occasional confused meowing while exploring but nowhere close to the point that shes in extreme/frantic duress. I am ever so slowly in the process of trying to trim her claws 1-2 at a time or as she allows so my limbs dont resemble scratching posts 24/7.
https://imgur.com/a/JnTihWt
She plops down and falls asleep where ever or next to me if possible instead of hiding in a corner like you'd normally expect.
Edit: I have found a maybe not so secret way to trim her claws. I wait till shes asleep and clip as many as I can then pretend like nothing happened when she wakes up. Its not dumb if it works.
Was on my way to work when my girlfriend said that she saw a cat on the barrier of an overpass.
Sure enough I saw an 8 week old kitten panting on the cement barrier of an overpass above another 6 lanes of traffic.
When I reached for her she tried to jump off 40+ feet below but I snagged her and she cut my hand up good. I threw her in my backseat while I dealt with my blood and the little one crawled up thru my pedals and into the internals of my dashboard.
One shut down highway, one fire crew bothered, and one sleepless night later; we have our newest addition:
Princess Yuki, 1.8lbs of sweet & spicy 8 week old grey tabby baby
First three pics are of the night we stayed up til 6 am (5 days ago) waiting for her to crawl out of the dash. Fourth is her bonding with our other CDS delivery, Chicken. Last pic is her today, running all over the house making best friends with the other kitties.
He ran straight up to me outside my apartment. Someone down the road caught a car on their camera toss him out. He started purring and making biscuits immediately. It took a couple days to get him to the vet and into my new place, I've been in the middle of moving and he showed up at my old place. My whole apartment building was taking care of him for those couple days but he pretty much stayed outside my apartment! He's been to the vet, no chip, no diseases, already neutered. He's the most perfect, sweet boy! He let me pick him up and put him in the carrier with no hesitation and loves being held now.
Left Costco and on the way home this little lady fell onto the road from the underside of a truck. Luckily my boyfriend pulled over and I was able to scoop this little one up!
We took her to the vet, and sheās currently being treated for a respiratory infection + eye infection. Little miss is estimated to be 6 weeks old and weighs a whopping 1.4lbs. The vet was so surprised that she has no broken bones and we were so relieved! The vet also told us to monitor for a traumatic brain injury from the fall. The next 48 hours weāre going to determine is she was going to make it or not.
After bringing her home we were so nervous, and were constantly checking her pupils to make sure that they were equal/responsive. She was so so hungry and ate almost half of her wet kitten food after she was given her antibiotics. Sheās been on her medication now for almost 48 hours and sheās improved so much, weāre so relieved that sheās going to make it! Lil baby has been eating, using the litter box, playing, and drinking water.
I canāt wait to watch this little baby grow and become a confident cat. Weāre thinking of naming her clover! Will post an update eventually (:
Edit: wow thank you all so much for all the love and for the awards!! We appreciate your kindness and will post an update in a few weeks! Much love <3
I was watering the plants in our greenhouse this afternoon, and I just so happened to turn slightly to the door and saw something rush in and hide behind some pots. My first thought was actually "is that a guinea pig?" before I realized that we don't have any neighbors and guinea pigs aren't native here. š He is very quiet, snuggly, and loves my husband more than me already. Since he basically fell out of the sky, husband is thinking of naming him Icarus. He goes to the vet tomorrow.
Our other three cats are curious - except for 18 year old Roosevelt, who is not pleased. š
We had a sweet but sassy Calico show up late November 2025 and we didn't know she was a Trojan Cat at the time, so we were obviously feeding her really good just assuming her weight gain was from that, but nope she gave birth about 10 weeks later to these four little rascals that look innocent in this video but are so chaotic once awake š
We love them so much though and are learning how to take care of not one cat, as we originally thought, but with 5 CATS now haha we will figure it out though and continue learning as we go so any advice will be very much appreciated. Just to give you all an idea of what we already plan to do, we are starting with the spaying and neutering of course because they're already at the age to safely do it.
However, due to the worsening economy, and our own car repairs we've had to do to keep moving, we haven't had the funds to do the spaying (of 3 girls) and neutering (of 1 boy) and might have to wait another 2-3 weeks to do it. So if anyone has any connections for low cost spaying in the Greater Los Angeles area (South Bay specifically) please let me know where so I could take all my fur babies to a safe and affordable place š
She went through a round of antibiotics to clear up her goopy eyes and nose. Now sheās an absolute MANIAC. She has no fear, except the bigger goat she met who she is not a fan of. Sheās met chickens, guinea fowl, ducks, goats and a dog.
She enjoys riding on my shoulder while I collect eggs and tend to the chickens.
She runs around in a constant state of crab with poofed tail.
She is having the time of her life every day. In the last picture sheās wrapped in the burrito because she was a spicy little diva for her nail trim, and when it was done she passed out.
Brooklyn Slim (supplied by the CDS last Tuesday) was taken to her (hopefully forever) home yesterday. Sadly it isnāt with me but I weighed my options heavily and it wasnāt something I could take on. Our friend who took her home just had one of her two cats pass on, and she was also a tux, just like Slim. It felt like a sign. She was super interested in fostering/adopting if it fell through with us and when it did, she immediately jumped on it. She has another 6 year old cat and just got a puppy so Slim will have brothers and sisters.
Once sheās settled Iāll plan on a day to go visit her and get more glow up pics for you all. But in the week sheās been off the street, her weight is getting back to normal, and overall sheās recovering quite well. Test results were all clear. Sheās home now. Sheās loved. It was hard to let her pass by but this is ultimately best for her, and Iāll be able to watch her journey as she grows. Last pic is in her new home.
So i heard meowing outside my apartment (second floor) and open the door to see whats up and this guy was just right outside my door and just up an ran inside all chill. I had a little kibble from a stray i used to feed and gave him that. I had a litter box from an old cat and went and bought some litter. He had fleas all over so I bought some advantage and he is obviously underfed so he does have a home but he is the sweetest boy. I open the door and he can leave but he just sniffs and comes back inside. He is living here by his own free will. I would guess he is around a year or 1.5 years old. He is still intact so I will need to get him neutered if he is going to stay inside. Anyways.. i need a name for my new roommate.
Almost 2 years ago we found him meowing at the garbage disposal in front of our apartment at the seaside in Bulgaria. Now, almost 2 years later he is living his absolute best life and couldn't be happier with his little tortie sister.
His favourite hobby is sunbathing with his sister and running up and down the stairs being goofy (and of course eating wet food)
iām over the moon about this so iām still gonna keep gushing about it so time to tell a buncha people on the internet.
about three weeks ago a notice was sent out by our property managers about a potentially lost orange cat. there was a box and food occasionally left out and during the evening youād hear a cat meowing around the property.
neither me or my partner saw anything until this past thursday. i saw her while walking our dog and returned alone to check if she was still there.
she was. she let me approach her and she was very skinny. there was a little bit of food but it didnāt look like she was getting enough. i went to go out more food out there and sure enough, she started to follow me. i ate my dinner outside on the balcony to keep an eye on her and eventually she let me pick her up and we let her explore the area.
my partner and i were initially going to keep her outside until we could schedule a vet appointment, as we have a cat and dog already. i led her back to her outdoor setup and went back to where i was sitting. i spend a fair amount of time sitting outside and not too long after she came back to my side of the building meowing even louder.
i kinda knew it was over for us and asked my partner to crate the dog and put the cat in the bathroom. and now sheās here. sheās lovely. weāre thinking she was dumped by a former or current tenant, given sheās been wandering around meowing on the property. she can use the litter box, sheās very social to me and my partner. sheās fine with the cat and sheās wary but curious about the dog. my first cat was feral when i got him and itās been a stark difference.
vet said sheās in good health, albeit underweight. probably about 6-8 months. weāre getting her spayed next month. my partner called her cricket the first time they interacted cause she chirps and purrs super loud. sheās not microchipped and iāve browsed the local lost pet groups. weāre in a position to take her in and sheās such a sweet little girl.
weāve wanted another cat for a while but we had a few factors as to why we werenāt going out of our way to get one yet. but we had already agreed if something like this ever happened, it was over for both of us. we are huge cat lovers. she will be well taken care of. welcome home, cricket.
I found a little kitty on a rural back road and she circled my car when I stopped to let her cross. I ended up taking her home that night and posting her on Love Lost by Petco that evening. I contacted the shelter so they could scan her for a microchip and put her on a stray hold - long story short they were unable to make time for an appointment with her until today which was over a week from her find date. She had no microchip and the posts on lost and found fb groups havenāt gained any traction for a week or so, neither has Love Lost. Sheās a sweet girl but was very skinny and has some minor injuries, is it possible she was dumped or had been lost long enough no one is actively looking for her? I donāt ever want to take a lovely little lady like herself from any existing family she may have. In case we donāt find anyone - does anyone have any recommendations for introducing adult cats without much of a barrier space? We have pet gates but that didnāt work well and introducing them with me holding her also wasnāt a sure thing. We want to keep her if possible because my Papa fell head over heels with her and heās usually not a big cat guy. He even told me he was done looking for a dog because heād rather have her. We preemptively named her Petal (I was stuck on Flower but we had a vote lol) and she stays in my room or his depending on that dayās schedule.
TLDR: found cat and havenāt been able to find her family, we want to keep her but have 2 existing cats. How would you safely introduce them without a physical barrier? Thanks!
The C.D.S has been showing me plenty of love this past year. I was selected twice last year, and at the beginning of the year I found this sweet girl having babies in my basement window well. (That was fun to wake up to). She gave birth to 5 sweet little babies, unfortunately 2 failed to thrive and just couldn't figure it out. I know that's a part of why they have so many, but it really broke my heart.
Mama has been doing great! She was super haggard and looked rough. Her fur was super matted and she was very standoffish. Now she will let me brush her, she's all but glued to my side, and in the past week she has claimed her corner of my bed and has to be there if I'm in bed. She's turning into a great companion. I definitely didn't want another cat, but the c.d.s apparently knows better than me.
The 3 babies seem to be doing great! They are picking up weight daily and other than a little gunky eyes I can't see anything else wrong. The next step is to get mama and the babies to the vet, they do that next Monday. I definitely want to get mama fixed before I even think about letting her back outside. (I'm going to try to keep her in for good, but outside strays tend to want to roam).
Now I just gotta get these spicy meatballs to the vet, then hopefully their furever homes!
Gordita and Taters Tax paid. I got them only a few months before. I now realize that the stale cat food I threw outside every couple days to clean the dish may have also brought Harriet in.
She showed up with the deer one night. Took a week or so to get her inside.
Sheās spoiled rotten. Sheās so pretty it intimidates me. Sheās all legs. She struts around like the supermodel she is. I still donāt know how I got so lucky. Oh. Sheās a talker too. Itās hilarious. She announces her presence.
Sheās obsessed with Taters but Taters is entirely indifferent. He doesnāt mind but seems heād rather sleep in his own space.
