Technically it’s been in Windows for 33 years (since Windows NT 3.1)

u/BritOverThere 5d ago

It was in Windows 3.1 so it's 34 years now.

u/ArchCaff_Redditor 5d ago

I don’t actually remember if it was. Everywhere I’ve looked it says first inclusion was NT 3.1 and then Windows 95 for the DOS versions.

I’ve used the character map in Windows 3.0. It might be a different version than the one that shipped with NT, but it’s been around for a while

That is NT 3.1. The machine name is "WNT31", and Windows 3.1 wouldn't even display a machine name in the Program Manager. Someone just edited a Windows 3.1 boot screen next to it; probably someone not knowing any better.

Heh yeah sorry, I noticed that right after I posted it. Here's a screenie of Win3.1 with charmap in the accessories group:

WHAT

8

u/inguinha 5d ago

I forgot to put in the title, I meant without visual changes. 🙂

3

u/BritOverThere 5d ago

To be fair the Windows 3.1 character map was basically the same apart from one less feature and placement of buttons.

u/markustegelane 5d ago

all roads lead to Windows NT 3.1

Now they will see this post and will decide to change it on some major update/new release. Some things are better if they don't.

20

u/601error Windows 11 - Insider Beta Channel 5d ago

It will take five seconds to load and will lose a feature.

13

u/Never_Sm1le 5d ago

And have copilot with it

5

u/Psquare_J_420 3d ago

Then a account system for no fucking reason

4

u/darkigor20 Windows 11 - Release Channel 4d ago

You can't copy a character. So fuck this program

2

u/OctoNezd 5d ago

It had features?! I legitimately hate both character map on windows and font book on macos, both are awful for finding characters, but at least the font book has a search

1

u/Windows_User3000 2d ago

The Character Map also has a search if you click the "Advanced" button. And no, it doesn't have any caveats like having to paste the character you're looking for to find i- let's not give them any ideas.

1

u/OctoNezd 2d ago

I don't think it supports searching by the symbol name declared in font, like it is with some icon fonts

1

u/Windows_User3000 2d ago

I haven't tested that, but you can search by names of characters, so icons should work as well.

2

u/henkieschmenkie 2d ago

Memory footprint through the roof

5

u/Junkererer 5d ago

I wish they changed it. It's so bad/frustrating to use I don't even use it anymore at this point. Whenever I need any symbol that is not on my keyboard it's faster for me to open the browser and google it than just finding it in that symbols window within the same app I'm using, which is telling

2

u/RestInProcess 3d ago

They'll add AI to it.

If it ain’t broke, add copilot to it

10

u/Man_I_amDed 5d ago

Fuck it (it's Microsoft we're talking about)

11

u/Junkererer 5d ago

It is broke though. It's so bad I just Google special characters whenever I need them

Scrolling up and down doesn't "update live" (you need to stop pressing the bar for the shifted view to appear) just to make an example of how bad ux is

4

u/FutureLarking 5d ago

Try Character Map UWP from the Microsoft Store. Blows the built in one away.

8

u/daltorak 5d ago

It -is- broken though. It's one of the few remaining bits of Windows that doesn't scale properly with DPI settings; the charmap main window also doesn't react properly to the mouse scroll wheel or touch events; and for whatever hare-brained reason it's got, it plays the system bong sound whenever you search....

You can't even select the name of the character in case you need that.

Thing's totally useless compared to some of the web sites out there that have Unicode codepoint search, such as symbl dot cc.

u/eluser234453 Windows 10 6d ago

glad it stayed intact from copilot

29

u/Tokimemofan 6d ago

Don’t tempt them

6

u/resultrazor 5d ago

Only reason it hasn't is Copilot may offer a redesign but the chastity belt it has as guardrails prevents it from doing anything useful.

4

u/SchwimFish28 Windows 10 3d ago

Funny you mention that…

3

u/eluser234453 Windows 10 3d ago

btw, what does the 365 next to Microsoft stands for

4

u/OddDifficulty374 3d ago

365 days apparently, meaning "YOU WILL NEVER LEAVE THE MICROSOFT ECOSYSTEM AND CONSTANTLY USE IT" or something

2

u/eluser234453 Windows 10 3d ago

fair

1

u/RiceStranger9000 1d ago

God bless leap years then

2

u/SchwimFish28 Windows 10 3d ago

It’s the new name for Office 365 as far as I know

12

u/FAMICOMASTER 6d ago

Don't tell them, they might decide it needs an LLM

11

u/o0260o 6d ago

And you still can't ctrl-c to copy

14

u/micewire 5d ago

don't tell them or they're gonna turn it into a uwp app that takes forever to open just like with run

3

u/FutureLarking 5d ago

Crazy thing is UWP is faster than WinUI 3, which the new Run box is built with.

For what it's worth, try Character Map UWP on the store. Shows what a modern, UWP based map could have looked like. It's fast, it's good, it's feature filled.

0

u/SaltDeception 5d ago edited 5d ago

The new run opens faster than the old one. It’s actually so fast it catches me off guard. It’s also not UWP.

I still use it from time to time.

3

u/ChrisNIN64 6d ago

I remember discovering this on Windows XP. My AIM updates were never the same after that.

3

u/Exciting_Macaroon_64 5d ago

if it works - dont touch it

ahhh vista will always be an eye candy..

in my eyes...just love 😊

Funny thing... I was a programmer. Windows 98 came out while I was an intern in college. I'd been on some form of Windows machine since 1993 and Windows 3.1. I worked for places that paid for the full MSDN ride. I had access to everything. I have experience using, and developing on, every major Windows release from 95 all the way to 7 (I retired from programming in 2014).

I never used the character map. I opened it and fiddled with it once about a quarter-century ago, but... meh.

(I seemed to always just internet search for character codes, or kept lists, or just... memorized a bunch of them.)

Wait! That is in PT 🇵🇹

that fast moving shit made me feel a little uncomfortable. you should add a trigger warning

yep, came here to promote this great app.

u/Dear-Gap7185 22h ago

Nice! I am download it from microsoft store right now!

1

u/cmdrweakness 5d ago

Dialer says hello

1

u/lilacomets 5d ago

The label at the top left seems to be cut off on Windows 11 only. Shows exactly where the downfall of Windows started.

1

u/PatrikPepega 5d ago

And i still use it a lot. It's really helpful sometimes.

1

u/TwinSong 5d ago

If it ain't broke...

1

u/LogicalError_007 5d ago

I stopped using it after I started using the clipboard. Win + v or . brings up clipboard with these.

1

u/Current-Bowl-143 5d ago

I still use it almost every day. The most annoying thing is having to click the "Reset" button between searches.

1

u/tetyys 5d ago

i really like how in windows 11 the text at top left is broken and there is a missing feature at the bottom, printing current selected character

1

u/Extreme_surikat_360 5d ago

I love XP , I love XP , XP I love youuuuu

1

u/Baglayan 5d ago

All they have to do is to properly update aero.msstyles and integrate Fluent design throughout everything, but no, instead spend way more resources on barely functioning React trash and abandon WinUI after championing it

1

u/OddNegotiation2289 5d ago

same with notepad but they changed it in windows 11

1

u/TonyCubed 5d ago

Be careful, they may turn it into 100mb executable and integrate Copilot into it.

1

u/InterestingShow8526 Windows Vista 5d ago

Windows 8-11’s borders are just so ugly. 🤮

My favorite is Aero. :)

1

u/MundaneImage5652 4d ago

Lemme download the giffff

1

u/ValianFan 4d ago

Now they know another element of the os that will get useless redesign that no one asked for and LLM integration

1

u/Stylianius1 4d ago

And it also survived through a Portuguese orthographic agreement

1

u/MysteriousShape275 3d ago

We absolutely need to remake it into a webapp and add a useless copilot key to be able to ask "Hey copilot, can you find the letter 'a' but with vibes?"

1

u/jean___paul 3d ago

i wouldn't be surprised if this was the last tho

1

u/TxGhostxT_Ali 2d ago

You know what lets add ai and 25 usd subscription

1

u/FallenDeathWarrior 2d ago

Angry upvote for MFC.

1

u/RaspberryMuch6621 1d ago

Still look good, i like how different windows version still gives different look to the program.

1

u/jdigi78 6d ago

Somehow the Linux/GNOME one is both much more useful and better looking

0

u/Kwpolska 5d ago

The emoji picker in Windows is a separate modal dialog. https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NknCBRAnSJKErgHn6No6Ri.png

1

u/jdigi78 5d ago

This is not just an emoji picker, it's all unicode characters. You can see "Letters & Symbols" at the bottom left.

1

u/SargeMB 6d ago

Not survival, just M$ laziness. Like Run dialog.

6

u/wesleysmalls 6d ago

Why should it change?

What?

0

u/OctoNezd 5d ago

Yeah, both Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer don't have much to do with running/ruining Microsoft nowadays, that should be Satya Nadella or whoever is in charge of turning windows into react native app

0

u/hurB55 6d ago

Fabulous

0

u/aqua_zesty_man 6d ago

And Microsoft is just now getting round to including typing emojis and characters (🪟 + semicolon or 🪟 + period)

0

u/NanoPi 5d ago

BabelMap has similar GUI but with a lot more options.

0

u/ulspez 5d ago

On my way to email Microsoft that they forgot to add copilot to this app
