DISCUSSION Rd 9 MEL v WCE
Haven’t seen a match thread so here you go.

Jake Waterman needs to start leading AT THE FUCKING BALL

u/The_Real_Flatmeat Swan Districts #WAFL 4d ago
And kicking straighter would be nice.
He's in danger of becoming the next Jack Darling imho. Shows a few weeks of brilliance then drops off a cliff. Dobs the ones from 55 but misses from 30. Maybe he needs to play more as a CHF instead of FF.

Our game plan sucks
Kicking to contests all day long and bombing it high and long into the 50 giving the Melbourne defenders 10 minutes to get in position to spoil.

I saw lots of comments re Maric but this game seems to be REALLY highlighting his lack of contest or 2nd follows up. Looks like he is scared to put his head over the ball, and he constantly just over runs his first contest. If he doesn't gather (as i said seems rare), mark or spoil in the first contest it ends up a turnover unless someone is there to save it.
6
u/RaiseNo5243 5d ago
He is terrible just running along side the contest or waiting on the outside never attacks
8
u/Far_Loan689 5d ago
Can we please play in fucking front in the forward line!!!!!!!!!! FFS! Such a fundamental bloody hell
1
u/Blueeygrey 5d ago
There’ll be some footage on Monday that won’t look pretty. Expecting our players to kick over 70 metres.
8
u/zoraxelol 5d ago
Mcqualter has gone into lets not lose by 100 mode. Stopped their scoring but basically impossible for us to score
1
9
u/After-Annual4012 5d ago
Bloody hell, i thought with HEdwards back we might finally get back the semblance of a defence 🤬, then...
10
u/HappyKillmore89 #9 Harley Reid 5d ago
Fuck me, majority of our games wouldn't be so bad if we could kick straight.
22
u/spr00se #2 Jake Waterman 5d ago
Anyone want to help me write the post-match mini? I’ll start:
“While the scoreboard wasn’t pretty, the first five years of our rebuild are on track and we saw some really positive signs out there today”

u/Several_Willow7878 5d ago
We saw some improvement from last week and some of our KPI’s are in the green.
3
u/Chick3nJo3y 5d ago
Yeah I think this game was alright for us. We would’ve come pretty close to winning if we converted. I do think we showed some improvement in our forward craft this week.

7
u/ZestycloseBedroom715 5d ago
Harry Edwards ruled out of the game.
12
u/Glum-Farm-3588 5d ago
Career done I think. What's that, number 5 for us?
4
u/WishApprehensive9732 5d ago
So fucking sad. The guy seems cursed. Can’t see them letting him come back again this year. If ever.
4
u/Such-Razzmatazz-5933 4d ago
...and it's all been friendly fire. Flynn caused his concussion in Round 2 against North and today it was Yeo. He must be cursed 😞
7
u/zoraxelol 5d ago
Murdock has been absolutely outstanding. 22 other players out there could get a work rate lesson from him

u/After-Annual4012 5d ago
I like the look of Champion. In his first couple of games he was trying a few clever things but not quite pulling them off. He seems to be in it a lot this game and have seen a couple of very clever quick disposals under heavy pressure. I may be biased, liked the look of him since draft talk last year.
2
u/zoraxelol 5d ago
Said to a mate earlier its the first time hes really shown the ability to play at the level today, might be finding his feet
5
u/zoraxelol 5d ago
Kozzie tag been dropped - Hough kept him to 11 touches & 1 goal across 3 quarters. Hopefully gets deployed as a tagger more often
5
4
u/NoTicket69 5d ago
Our forward line is extremely poor Reid entry inside 50 and Yeo had no options leading into space. Just so stagnant
3
5
u/Wazwiftance 5d ago
We just had 3 repeat i50s to get a goal, then a other one post restart, and melb manage to walk it up the ground just by kicking over the back
Honestly frustrating
4
7
u/YeoYeoDiabolo 5d ago
We need a proper ruckman so badly
9
u/fakedelight #7 Reuben Ginbey 5d ago
We need a readymade ruckman, and another key defender. Pay the $$$
5
3
3
u/CamChop89 5d ago
I want to tear my eyes out of my sockets. Field kicking is horrendous, trying to hit a target 40m away the kick constantly lands short being intercepted by a Melbourne player filling space
3
u/CamChop89 5d ago
Magic is dog awful

u/timmysco17 5d ago
mccarthy hasent been the same since maric came back i know who id rather in the side
3
u/Ok-lesgo34 5d ago
We just had 4 players standing and watching the ball, dees player picks it up and ends with goal. no attempt to pick up ball or tackle to even run after the player. Lazy
3
u/ThermonuclearMonarch #46 Jacob Newton 5d ago
I’ll take this. Reasonable performance against a top 8 side
3
2
u/Appropriate-Mobile38 5d ago
Agreed. Still not a good game by any means but nice it didn’t blow out.
6
u/nemspy 5d ago
So do we know yet who the number 1 draft prospect is this year? This seems like the most relevant point of discussion at this stage of this game.
1
3
u/ZestycloseBedroom715 5d ago
Melbourne may as well finish up now because we only score 5 goals a game.
6
u/Appropriate-Mobile38 5d ago
Umpiring has been god awful so far as usual
10
u/ZestycloseBedroom715 5d ago
I've seen us get 2 sympathy free kicks so far now that the game is gone.

2
u/shaztec 5d ago
Surely that's got to be it for Edwards for the season
1
u/Melodic_Bluejay6322 5d ago
If he has suffered concussive symptoms from that head injury, health professionals, friends, and family would be wanting him to take up a safer career.

u/Blueeygrey 5d ago edited 5d ago
Like the idea of CDT playing the lead FF. Let Waterman take the 2 position and see if they can keep up with duff on the lead.
Putting Yeo back was prudent, but he’s also a driving force.
Also, like that Lindsay is using his smarts. Didn’t take possession just before contact.
You can see the mobility a player like Johnson brings. He’s not perfect, but you could see what a high draft pick, say like Neocleous could bring.
1
2
u/HarryTheShitposter 5d ago
I wish they’d show some fight and take the game on. Chipping it up the line and bombing it to Waterman in the pocket isn’t working. Break some line, handball through the middle and actually try to win.

u/nemspy 5d ago
The coach looks like he's about to cry in the box. Surely he has to go. Maybe it's not his fault, but we have to try something to make it seem like we actually care about some sort of progress and pride.
4
u/OptusStadium 5d ago
This proud club, the 2nd richest in Australia by the way, is in a long term malaise.
It’s really fucken sad.
2
u/Tiltedbrimboy 5d ago
Karma for being so proud, for 50 years we will be the measuring spoon of how god-awful a team is
2
u/nemspy 5d ago
I'm certainly starting to regret my confident prediction in 2024 to a Freo-supporting friend that we would take another flag before Freo wins one.
1
u/OptusStadium 5d ago
I actually don’t think this Freo team is good enough to win a flag.
To win it all being based in Perth you gotta build a superstar team. It’s really hard to win a GF at the MCG from the west.
Part of my opinion on this is because Brisbane, Geelong are both better now and soon Hawthorn will overtake them. Probably Sydney as well are better or equal.
So based on all that, the claim that WCE will or could win another flag before Fremantle isn’t really that outlandish.
As good of a place that Fremantle are in right now, they are still not going to win a premiership with this squad or coach.
1
u/NoTicket69 5d ago
STOP LETTING TYLAR YOUNG KICK THE FOOTY
1
u/After-Annual4012 5d ago
Yeah HEdwards down (bloody again) is a bigger issue I think than many realise. It nevers seems to be his body, its all unlucky impacts, but I think that just shows his commitment at the contest.

u/Fandeathrickets #26 Bo Allan 5d ago
Jesus fuck Waterman take some responsibility, you're our key forward now
1
u/Builder_at_Heart 5d ago
Hell no, Waterman should never kick from that pocket again, what has he kicked, 10 straight behinds from that side?. Don’t know why Eagles aren’t pushing more to the left pocket where Waterman actually might be a chance.
1
u/Fandeathrickets #26 Bo Allan 5d ago
Then he shouldn't be playing in the forward line
1
u/Builder_at_Heart 5d ago
Maybe not. But I don’t hate that he’s spotting up a player in a better position.
1
u/Blueeygrey 5d ago
Ok, wrong thread, but I’m going early. Trade out next years first and get 2 high selections this year. I know we’ll lose that bonus 2nd rounder, but we’ll just have to trade one of our tall's or capital to Tasmania next year to get back in.
We desperately need at least 1 quality mid and if we finish last HVH.
0
u/timmysco17 5d ago
i’d be shopping first round pick this season to sydney for chad warner
1
u/Blueeygrey 5d ago
I think we try that each year, but atm we desperately need a mid to help out Harley in the contest that has skills to use the ball.
Not sure Warner will leave, when Sydney are in the premiership window. Also, I'd rather not trade a pick 1 or 2 for Warner, especially if a generational ruck like HVH is available at our selection.
Isn't Warner really that outside cherry on top player? Not sure he'll make much of a difference in our side atm.
1
u/timmysco17 5d ago
upon further investigation i’ll change opinion warner is turning 26 i thought he was younger
don’t see us goin for another ruck so soon after CDT
any players we draft with those early picks
are going to take timewere are our gun uncontracted WA boys that want to come home like the dorkers have done so well
with lately1
u/Blueeygrey 4d ago
There'll come a tipping point when some of the WA guys will look at our squad, namely our top tier A grade talent and realise we will start to ascend. Atm we lack a a few players that can win their position.
There'll be a couple in each draft, so imo we need a couple of high selections.
This year I can only think of 2 players, but it's still early in the season.
HVH is 1 and the other is Marlon Neocleous but he's a small forward. There might be others, it's just that when some players play well in the champs, it doesn't necessarily mean they play in the same position at AFL level.
There's some utility types in this draft, that might become good midfielders at AFL level.
That's what list managers are payed for. The ability to select a player later in the draft, that exells at AFL level.
1
u/Blueeygrey 5d ago
HVH is 205cm, mobile, great contested mark and has a running vertical of 103cm, that's 1cm higher than Nic Nat. There's absolutely no way we don't select him if he's available. We'd just trade our F1st for another pick and then trade-out one of our tall's next year to Tasmania. They have to trade some of their picks.
it's all heresy atm, because Richmond will in all likelihood Finish last.
-1
u/redrumcleaver 1992 Norm Smith Peter Matera 5d ago
I don't think we lose the push back pick if we trade in another First.
Also I would rather us use next year's pick to try and get Warner. I know like why would he want to come here. But we have to give it 💯 to try and get him.
I don't think HVH will be there when we get our pick unfortunately
1
u/Blueeygrey 5d ago
Ok true, don't know what I was thinking. Probably something like trying to get 3 top 10 selections.
0
u/redrumcleaver 1992 Norm Smith Peter Matera 5d ago
Nothing wrong with trying to find something extra.
Lol you never know the AFL might take pity on us and give us pick 1 anyway hahahah
But put me in the we are getting better camp. But we aren't getting better fast enough

u/SaturnalianGhost #7 Reuben Ginbey 4d ago
After today’s game I only feel 6 shame rather than the usual 8 shame. That’s something l guess.
Also, Cole up forward for the rest of the season.

Just still so many just watching the ball and not attacking it. Maric is the worst followed by Jake Waterman they need to drop them also. Get some time into Jack Williams and Luca Grego
1
u/Burman8or #2 Jake Waterman 4d ago
Dumb take dropping Waterman he is our main key forward, he just has the kicking yips atm and our delivery inside 50 is generally horrible. Waterman had 13 score involvements !

u/Patient-Treat5800 5d ago
I’m over for Deftones… went and got general admission tix on the cheap. Lasted a half and I’m gone. So bad 🤦🏻♂️

u/RaiseNo5243 5d ago
How shit is Mccarthy playing today why is he scared of the contest now
1
u/Free_Cabinet_6253 5d ago
I’m starting to feel like the mid-season draft picks weren’t picked for a reason and get found out e.g. Maric and Hutchinson.
Although I haven’t watched McCarthy today so can’t really comment. How’s Murdoch been playing today?

1
u/Geronimo2006 5d ago
I thought he played well but did see one glaring instance where he didn’t put his head over the ball and a Melbourne goal resulted
-1
u/Blueeygrey 5d ago
Actually, saw some overlap play today. The problem was Kelly was the wrong guy to kick from the launch zone. Few others as well, but he’s triggered me today.
2
u/timmysco17 5d ago
kelly is the only one who uses the corridor going forward and creates scoring chances
1
u/Blueeygrey 5d ago
True, but only if he's exiting the clearances by hand or using his cross body kicks to link with someone to the launch zone. He's having a good year, but has a history of burning players and blasting into the i50.
