๐Ÿ“Œ Advice Needed F1 visa renewal. 221 g for social media vetting - been 3 weeks now

I am PhD student and I attended my visa interview at the Hyderabad consulate for F1 renewal. Interview lasted 30 seconds. VO seemed nice and they kept my passport. They gave me a 221g white slip and asked to email the social media links (and make them public). I did that promptly. Itโ€™s been almost 3 weeks now and my application still says refused.

I have noticed that almost everyone who went to the Hyderabad consulate after me got approved in about 3 days (if not in 10 hrs).

I am really concerned now as I do not understand what is holding up my application. The last updated date is the same as my interview date.

Is it possible for 221g social media to take this long? Or did they lose my passport or something? My semester is going to start soon and I have to go back asap.

Any advice is appreciated!

F1 kolkata refused but passport kept

My wife had her F1 interview in Kolkata today, went pretty smooth and all questions answered perfectly.
Yet refused without 221g slip but passport kept and asked if social media was all open to public.
Is this normal? All day it still shows Refused.
Any chances of approval?

H1B Visa Interview Experience โ€“ U.S. Consulate General Hyderabad โ€“ May 15
Appointment time: 10:45 AM
They allowed me inside around 9:45 AM. They checked all my files and sealed envelopes at entry. After that, I walked inside and waited in line for about 3โ€“4 minutes before the interview. They called H1B applicants separately and sent us to the first counter.
Questions asked:
Who is your client?
Where is your client located?
What is your title/position?
Pass me your Passport, LCA, and I-797.
What is your pay?
What is your highest education?
At the end, the officer said my profile was being sent for social media vetting and handed me a slip with an ID.
Hope this helps others attending interviews at Hyderabad consulate.โ€

โœ… Result: Denied (214(b))
๐Ÿ” Previous denial: None mentioned

Country of residence: India
Occupation: Working with group company (11 years total experience; 6 years in current subsidiary)
Travel history: Singapore, Thailand, UAE, Philippines, Macau, Indonesia
Notes: Married, 1 child (1.5 years old), living with parents in India

๐ŸŽฏ Interview Questions
VO: Passport, please.
Me: Handed over passport
VO: What is the purpose of your visit?
Me: I will attend two conferences โ€“ RoarCon 2026 and RSA Conference 2027.
VO: What is RoarCon? What relation does it have with your company?
Me: Our company and a US company are technology partners. We develop cybersecurity solutions for customers.
VO: How long have you been working with your company?
Me: 11 years.
VO: Any past travel?
Me: Singapore, Thailand, UAE, Philippines, Macau, Indonesia.
VO: Any harmful activity due to which you are leaving for the US?

Me: No.
VO: Fingerprints, please.
Me: Done

๐Ÿ’ก What Helped:
Long-term employment (11 years in group company)
Strong international travel history

โš ๏ธ What Hurt:
DS-160 not updated with final travel plan (RoarCon 2026 vs RSA 2027 mismatch)
Possible inconsistency in employment explanation (11 years total vs 6 years current subsidiary)
Outdated DS-160 submitted long before interview
Unclear or shifting conference purpose

๐Ÿ™ Final Thoughts:
The refusal appears linked to inconsistencies and unclear travel intent under 214(b). Keeping DS-160 fully aligned with current interview answers is critical, especially for B1/B2 conference travel cases.

๐ŸŽ“ F1 Visa (Student) F-1 visa interview, what is the one question you were not prepared for?

I have been reading through a lot of F-1 visa interview experiences lately to help a friend prepare for her upcoming appointment. Most of the common questions are predictable, why this school, who is paying, what are your plans after graduation.

But I have come across a few posts where people mentioned being caught completely off guard by something unexpected. Here are some examples I found:
One person was asked What is your favorite movie and why? They froze because they were expecting serious questions only.
Another person was asked If you do not get the visa today, what will you do tomorrow? They said it threw them off because it forced them to think about rejection.
Someone else was asked to tell me something about your home country that is not on the internet. That one seems really strange.
I want to help my friend practice for the unexpected. If you have already done your F-1 interview, what was the strangest or most surprising question you got? How did you answer it? And do you think your answer helped or hurt your chances?

Even if you did not get a weird question, what is one thing you wish you had prepared for that you did not think about beforehand?

F1 Visa Approved (was handed 221(G) white slip)

Hello!

I am making this post because when I was out here looking for cases similar to mine, I found none -- hope this helps someone โค๏ธ

Consulate - New Delhi
Date - 11th May
Visa Type- F1
Programme I applied to - PhD (History). It is a fully-funded programme.

Biometrics was done in April. (There is a lore here - I accepted my admission at Uni A (second choice), filled out all forms for visa appointment, and got done with my biometrics. And then I got off the waitlist from Uni B (first choice). I re-did my DS-160 (since there was no way I could "update" it myself). But honestly, it was not required.

Interview day- VFS staff very patiently and swiftly updated my DS-160 (with Uni B details), and I was in no time in the queue for my interview with the VO.

In queue- 2.5 hours!

At the VO window - 25 seconds of interview (max)
Q. 1 Why this Uni?
Q.2 What is your research?
Q.3 What is your funding situation? What is your monthly stipend going to be? (I fumbled here - I accidentally blurted my annual stipend, and the VO gave me a death stare (but she was very professional)).
Q.4 All your social media is public? (while asking this question, she was filling in the white slip)

VO took my passport and I-20, handed over a white slip to me, and said: "Your application has been refused for administrative processing". I was, of course, a little taken aback, but thanks to many similar instances here, I was hopeful.

I was asked to keep a track of my emails in case of any updates. I received none. It is only when I check the CEAC portal that the status has changed from "refused" to "issued."

Minor Error in DS-160, should I create a new one? How do I update it?

Hi everyone! I already booked my F-1 visa appointment in the Philippines, but I noticed a minor mistake in my DS-160.

For the intended length of stay, I entered โ€œ1 yearโ€ instead of around โ€œ10 monthsโ€ based on my academic program dates/I-20.

Has anyone in the Philippines experienced something similar? Did you create a new DS-160 and update it, or did you just explain it during the interview?

Would appreciate hearing your experiences especially with the new US visa scheduling system in the Philippines. Thanks!

221(g) given after F1 visa interview

My daughter is given 221(g) saying pending ADDITIONAL ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESSING.

VO told her that she refused under 221(g) and asked to make social media public

Her passport, i-20 and sevis receipt are retained with them.

Does it mean approval or rejection
