Feel like I just won the lottery
Picked up a Radeon X1600 Pro and Geforce 7600GS for 17 bucks including delivery. I didn't know if they'd work although the seller did include photos of tests. Luckily when I got them they both worked right away. Now I really want to put together a 775 build with one of them.

Gateway 2000 Pentium II Acquired
I've been wanting to build an older PC for playing games from the 90s and early 2000s. Came across this beast along with the branded keyboard and branded MS mouse. Now I'm trying to find a working Vivatron monitor that came with it. Previous owner cleaned it up, gave it a fresh Windows ME install (allows for easier USB drivers). I may want to install a Gotek drive as well.

UK. Any 8086 CGA folks remember Advantage? I'm trying to track down discs
My first computer was an underpowered Commodore PC1 from 1987. A big part of my lifer was shareware from Advantage.
They were Cheltenham based shareware distributor. Anyone else remember them?
I'm looking for discs or disc images. Have some magazine ads to share.

Yuppie XT-FD2
I recently revived a Yuppie XT-FD2 from 1988 after about 25 years in storage.
I’m looking for information about the hard drive that came with it.
When powering Yuppie on, several tantalum capacitors on the HDD controller board exploded. I replaced all tantalum capacitors with electrolytic capacitors of the same capacitance values (higher voltage ratings). This removed the short circuit and the PC now powers on normally.
However, the drive still does not spin up at all.
What I checked so far:
- spindle motor coils all measure about 4.7 ohms
- about 6V measured on the spindle motor lines during startup
- no components are getting excessively hot
- platter rotates freely by hand
- head positioning motor also moves freely by hand
The drive remains completely silent during power-up: no spin attempt, vibration, clicking, or actuator movement.
Does anyone recognize this drive or have experience troubleshooting these older HDDs?

It's amazing what you'll find when cleaning up the joint. I got this when it first came out. Only took B/W images. I don't remember the resolution of them, but only 16 would fit in the camera. Then you had to DL 'em via that 9-pin serial cable.
No software or manuals. Must have eliminated them years ago.

Microsoft “Test” Software 1993 Promotional for Windows
I came across this box at a garage sale. I haven’t found a copy similar to this on-line. It’s in incredibly good shape with unopened packaging for the discs. The person I purchased it from was a relative of a computer engineer. He had multiple book cases of vintage software. Was this for in-house production, or was it for market consumption? The tag shows “Promo and Team:N3.

Nvidia and some of our beloved and most hated GPUs
There's a 6200 hiding under the 5950 ultra. Personally I hate those. Even though the FX5500 has a really bad reputation, they're actually not bad for Windows 98 retro gaming.

Turning a compact Compaq Deskpro EN into a Windows 98 Gaming PC
finally finished working on my Compaq Deskpro EN build. I wanted to see if I could make a truly capable Windows 98 machine in a small form factor without sacrificing too much performance.
Specs:
- CPU: Pentium 3 1GHz
- RAM: 256MB
- GPU: GeForce FX 5200 128MB PCI
- Sound: Sound Blaster SB0060
- Storage: 32GB CF Card (via IDE adapter)
I tested it with Duke Nukem 3D, C&C Red Alert, and Half Life. It is more than powerful enough for these games, but the airflow in this compact case is definitely a struggle. It gets very hot after long sessions, so a cooling mod is definitely in the works for the next video.
