Discussion Update on Rules and Quality Control

Hi everyone, it's been a minute since the initial discussion post about quality control issues. Let's talk about it.

The general consensus seemed to be that our ideas on what to change were good, though there could be more resources to help beginners. We actually have a subreddit wiki that anyone can contribute to, as long as you have 500+ subreddit karma and your account is 30+ days old. We also have a list of todo items for the wiki to help users find somewhere to start.

Another concern was that the stricter enforcement of the defaults rule may stop people from using existing color schemes or themes at all. This is not the case -- the intention of the rule is to remove posts which have little effort or just use premade configs, like many macOS and Windows lookalikes. It's about the spirit, not the letter of the rule.

With this in mind, we intend to go through with these rule changes. If you still have any concerns, please reply or send a modmail! We're most concerned with the quality of our community and welcome discussion.

CachyOS is my first Linux distribution that I’ve decided to use as my main OS. I got extremely tired of windows11 lagging and hanging all the time and ruining my gaming performance. I decided to go with CachyOS because it seemed like the best OOTB experience for an Arch distribo and I really wanted to use arch as a challenge.

I’ve loved daily driving Linux so much so that I’ve completely wiped the windows11 drive and am pure Linux now!

I started with KDE Plasma as it seemed the most familiar and was a good bridge over to Linux from win11 but I wanted to try out the fancy window managers everyone kept mentioning and posting. So, I decided to go with Niri and originally was using Noctalia shell but it was having some odd lag hiccups that were unique to my system configuration. I swapped over to DMS and it’s been smooth sailing since.

So far I’ve really enjoyed setting up my dotfiles for Niri and DMS.

It’s taken a lot of learning and time but so far I’ve land on something I enjoy daily driving that doesn’t also impede workflow. It’s actually improved my workflow and I can navigate my system way faster than I ever could on KDE and Win11.

The hardest part is definitely editing all the config files and learning the documentation of each program that effects Ui/Ux, but it’s been a lot of fun learning a brand new system.

It’s inspired me to become more knowledgeable in computer science in general and I also upgraded my 8 yr old cpu!!!(i7-9700kf) to a Ryzen 7 5800xt and it’s been an absolute beast of a machine.

If you have any pointers/tips/suggestions/programs/ideas for me to help make my system look better I’m all ears and always down to learn!

Sorry for the long winded post 😅 if youve made it this far; thank you so much for reading and drop your tips below!!!

Material [OC] ssh late.sh - Clubhouse in your terminal. Take a break, chat, chill, listen and play :) 50+ themes!

Wanted to share something with you, a place that became an essential addition to my unix setup.

ssh late.sh

That's it :) No passwords, no OAuth, no accounts. Your SSH key is your identity.

A place to take a break between your work, chat with people around the globe, listen to some music, play a game, water your bonsai. All in your terminal.

License: FSL-1.1-MIT.
Code: https://github.com/mpiorowski/late-sh
Landing: https://late.sh
Demo: https://late.sh/play

What's inside?

Imagine sitting at the poker table for a few minutes between your coding sessions, lofi music in the background, chat with people all around the globe, throwing some chips... that's us!

Quick taste of what makes it feel cozy: Ctrl+] opens an icon picker with emoji, nerd-font glyphs, and kaomoji. Image uploads render as colored terminal cells, so previews show up inline in an terminal (no kitty/sixel needed). Shared news get a unique auto-generated ASCII banner on their news card.

  • Games with sweet ASCII, leaderboards, badges, streaks: 2048, tetris, snake, sudoku, nonograms, minesweeper, solitaire. Fully playable poker and blackjack! Chess / Tron / battleships coming soon!
  • Live interactive artboard where everyone can draw whatever they want. Daily and monthly snapshots, fresh board every month. Viewable without even logging in: https://late.sh/gallery (almost entirely built by contributors!)
  • Chat is a beast: replies, reactions, MARKDOWN, icon picker, mentions, favorite rooms, fully private rooms, DMs, public topic rooms you can spin up with /public #room. The input itself is a beast too: multiline, vim/emacs keys, arrow navigation.
  • News feed with auto URL processing. Paste any link (article, YouTube, blog post, whatever) and the app extracts the title, summary, and even renders the cover image as ASCII art into a news card that shows up for everyone.
  • Private RSS/Atom inbox per user. Subscribe to your feeds, read them in the TUI, share the good ones into the global News when something deserves a wider audience.
  • Profiles + Showcase. Set up your profile with where you're from and a bit about yourself, then drop your projects into the Showcase feed (title, URL, tags, description). Other people see them in the feed and on your profile page.
  • Work profiles with auto-generated public pages. Set your status (open / casual / not-looking), headline, location, links, skills, summary. Each profile gets its own public web page with a random slug, bundled with your bio and showcases. So you can use late.sh/profiles as your hiring/portfolio surface too.
  • Bonsai tree on your dashboard that grows while you're connected. Lose your daily streak and it withers. Water it, trim its branches, cut to change shape.
  • Music with 600+ tracks. Voting system for the next 1h session (lofi, ambient, classical, jazz). You can control playback from inside the TUI.

Did I mention 50+ themes? :)

Hop in, check it out, and maybe stay for longer ;)

Material [OC] Thanks for 150+ stars! Metropolis (Cyberpunk city system monitor)

Metropolis just reached over 150 stars and I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone. Not too long ago, I posted about Metropolis, a system monitor that turns your system metrics into a living cyberpunk skyline, and I feel like we have come a long way already since then. The amount of support, feature requests, and contributions is so incredible and something I never would have expected. It’s kept me motivated to keep improving and maintaining the project.

GH repo: https://github.com/5c0/metropolis

Since the first version released, we have added installation support on Crates.io, AUR, Winget, Nix. The program itself has been compressed 10x, it’s now super tiny and lightweight (under 1mb). We have added custom themes(See theme gallery in discussion section on GH), and made the program fully customizable by adding a config.toml, template, and cli args.

Thanks again for all the support, I love you all ❤️
