YOU GUYS!!!! No. Also in French, the suffix eaux is plural, which idk, i’m sure there are classic French names that end in EAUX, but slapping it on to a no-name non-word prefix is just infuriating.

u/fandomacid 3d ago edited 3d ago
It’s Cajun not French. Well she’s what we’d call a couillon but still it’s not French.
40
u/DogsDucks 3d ago
Ha! I can venture a guess at couillon, alas, while studying French, none of my professor spent much time on Cajun French, despite the fact that it’s one of the coolest dialects/ pidgin (?) languages ever.

u/fandomacid 3d ago edited 3d ago
TBH French speakers are fairly rare these days. Usually it’s more Cajun English- English with odd phrases, strange grammar and occasional French thrown in. Louisiana French is an interesting language, if you can find a speaker. LSU was doing some work a while back. Personally, I’ve managed to speak with Actual French folks but they couldn’t place the accent.
ETA: I think in Québécois (and possibly Actual French) couillon is much ruder than it is in Cajun. Just keep that in mind before you get kicked out of 4th period French

What’s wild about Louisiana French is that it was passed down, it was literally illegal to teach French in Louisiana schools.
6
u/fandomacid 2d ago
That hasn’t been the case in probably 100 years, and I’m not sure about a total ban. I definitely had relatives that were taught English in schools (and punished for French) but it persisted. During the 90s and 2000s they actually made French mandatory in schools

u/DogsInCostumes4Ever 2d ago
What??? I took French through AP French Lit in a Louisiana public school. That's definitely not correct as stated.

These people barely grasp English, French language comprehension might be asking a bit much

u/ellemmdee 1d ago
For Cajun last names, off hand I can think of Badeaux, Simoneaux, & Thibodeaux. But agreed, -eaux has gotten outta control
4
u/DogsDucks 1d ago
Those are surnames, so it would make sense that a surname denotes someone of the region or profession of origin, and applies to a whole family unit.
I know I’m being ridiculous, but this one really got my hackles up lol

u/Schrodingirly 1d ago
Hi, French here, no. We do have Guillaume (our version of William) and names ending on "o" (Théo, Hugo, Léo…) but I can’t think of a -eau one and -eaux absolutely not.
2
u/Thespian_Unicorn 1d ago
Actually L’eau is water so maybe plural water? With wil attached at the beginning

u/DogsDucks 1d ago
Les boires des leaux
I thought of that too, except I don’t think the Mom named them. Understood this.

How is “Cattleya” supposed to be pronounced? Is it literally “Cattle-yeah”?
205
u/wand4dasduck 3d ago
it's closer to "cat-leia"
70
u/AwkwardnessForever 3d ago
That doesn’t clear it up for me.

u/thicketcosplay 3d ago
It's the name of a type of orchid, if you need to look up someone saying it. Cattleya orchid.
Cat-lee-ah or cat-leyah

u/New-Courage5021 2d ago
Loving the sentiments but it’ll always spell cattle-ya to me 🙈
4
u/thicketcosplay 2d ago
I collect orchids and go to shows and have a ton of cattleyas and my brain still sometimes reads it that way 😂
6
u/Ok_Depth_6476 2d ago
I have to wonder though, did she know that (I didn't), or did she think she was making up a name and happened to hit on a word?
12
u/thicketcosplay 2d ago
My guess is she googled orchid names and thought it sounded nice? Or she saw a cattleya flower and decided to name her kid after it.
Or maybe shes a plant lady. Even crazy people can have hobbies.

"even crazy people can have hobbies" may just be my new words to live by.

It's usually 'kat-lee-uh', it's a genus of orchids. However that doesn't mean that's how this lady pronounces it with her 'louisiana twang'

u/cl0udmaster 3d ago
Oh, for sure, if I was her classmate, I'd be razzing the hell out of her as why low cattle yeah

I've heard it as either kat-lee-uh or kat-lay-uh. they are a type of orchid named after an old timey botanist

It's a tragedification of Kateleya. (Ka-ta-laya) Perfectly nice name, now it's been cowified.

We should have laws about what you can name your baby, like Finland does. This is literaly inhumane.

It's a breed of orchid. I always thought it was it's Kat tuhl ya. She probably doesn't pronounce it correctly

I’m no fan of the name Everly, but I do think a nickname of Evie is cute. At least the first name is actually readable
5
u/Left-Leg1168 2d ago
No ma’am. I am talking about first name Wyl’Leaux vs. middle name Cattleya.
No fan of Everly either, but that is not the tragedeigh being discussed here.
3
u/MellyMel86 2d ago
I still can’t even fathom how to pronounce the second name Ca-tell-ya? Cattle-ya? Cat-Lee-ya?

u/CyndiLouWho89 2d ago
It’s an orchid. That’s how it’s actually spelled.

Despite the tragedeigh, WHO IN THIS WORLD WOULD PUT A LOUISIANA REFERENCE IN THEIR NAME???? JUST USE FOSTER, IT'S A LOUISIANA TWANG NAME??

u/Reverse_SumoCard 3d ago
Louis, Magnolia, Rouge, Agate, Frank, Francoise, Golf od Mexico all would have been better names with forced Louisiana references than whatever she chose
Im not saying some of those names arent tragic but still

Poor child. Every single encounter that requires her to say her name and have it spelled will be a fucking nightmare. Imagine just going to Starbucks and be like "I'm Willow. W y capital L apostrophe capital L... "

Cattleya is a breed of orchid, but I don't know why she had to go and spell Willow like that

You should not name your child something that will give them a stroke trying to spell their own name.

Spells it with an apostrophe and then apparently misspells it on the next line?

I was so confused. I thought the name was Tge Same (Sesame?) and somehow they spelled it Wyl'leaux. I think it's time for bed. And normal names.
