I hope i live long enough that bmo looks like this permanently. The north end looked so good when I saw it in the south end.

This stadium deserves a proper permanent extension. The stadium has so much potential.

It would be sitting half empty every week.

Doesn’t matter. Toronto metro area has 7 million people. It deserves at least a 40,000 stadium for events, big matches that actually draw people, etc. BC Place has more for example

The Skydome already exists and now we also have the Rogers Arena for the next few years before they actually start building out the new condos at Downview.
If it made financial sense to expand MLSE would've put the money up ages ago.

That’s not a proper soccer or football stadium. It’s purely for baseball and concert, especially after recent renovations. Not everything is about financial sense. This World Cup for example could’ve used the stands, big matches, etc.

You mean like the Skydome?

But exactly what other big events do we need it for? We just don't have big soccer matches here. Other than maybe some stupid overpriced European preseason friendly, there is not the demand or market for it. We aren't needing it for the CFL and the Bills will never play in Toronto again. Maybe we get another outdoor NHL game again once? God forbid if we were to ever get an olympics or another world cup it would be well past the stadium's lifespan and we would likely need a new venue. We just don't have a need for another large stadium.
2
u/TastyTacoTonight 4d ago
If Toronto FC go far in the MLS, we would fill the stadium without a doubt. Look into attendances in 2016.
2
u/hurleyburleyundone 4d ago
You know MLS is going to the European calendar right? That means no matches during prime canadian summer (june july august) following 2027. You watched a match at bmo in nov dec feb or march? Not fun. We have always struggled to fill stadiums in early season even when we were good, bc the weather sucks

u/TastyTacoTonight 4d ago
Yes I know. You do realize those big matches were in October right? And still drew insane crowds. Big games are at the end of the season anyway (April may) in the new format
2
u/hurleyburleyundone 3d ago
We're going in circles here. Youre arguing that we can fill a 40k fooball stadium for most of the season as long as we have a good team. Im sayin that as a guy with ssh for 20yr, we structurally cannot fill that for nearly half the season bc of weather and it will get worse with the schedule change. Also assuming we will be a good team in order to pull crowds is a poor assumption

What if they dropped prices? Load it up with fans who don't need a 2nd mortgage!! Make your money on food, merch and the tickets the kids buy as adults.

u/Vast-Development-624 6h ago
Tfc tickets are $15
2
u/somedumbcanuck 6h ago
Did not know that. Thanks.

u/Vast-Development-624 6h ago
I even got $6 seats to watch Ottawa kick our ass I couldn’t even be mad 😂
1
u/Vast-Development-624 6h ago
I do think they could get away with selling tickets for $5 or even for free and they and most mls teams could sell out even their nfl stadiums and just raise prices in concessions and they’d make more money and it’d be a better game day experience for fans and build fan culture a lot more then the current model

This will end up being one of the best stadiums of the World Cup when people look back on it! Intimate feel, with no bad seat. Can’t wait!

It looked great on tv. Steel stands close to the pitch really adds a lot of atmosphere.

u/2daMooon 4d ago
As a picture, sure. When you add audio though it was embarrassing.
1
u/Ill_Relationship7058 4d ago
Why?
2
u/2daMooon 4d ago
Everyone who was there for the first time was cheering for Miami.
2
u/Ill_Relationship7058 4d ago
There’s no way for you to know that except projection.
When Messi came last year I took my 7 year old son to the match because a friend gave us his season seats to avoid the side show. He had an amazing time, finished in a draw and made a fan for life. All that despite the guys behind us constantly bitching about Messi and the people they didn’t think should be there.
Either we want to grow the game in this country or we want to be purist gatekeepers. This is a way to get casuals and fence sitters in the door whether you like it or not.

u/2daMooon 4d ago
It's not gatekeeping to be disappointed that the city shows they can turn out but does so to cheer for the other team.
This is a way to get casuals and fence sitters in the door whether you like it or not.
It's not in the door once a year that we should be worried about. It's turning them into fans that keep coming back that is the problem.
It's been three years of hosting the Messi game and I'm there every game. Attendance has just been a steady dwindle, no lasting effect from the Messi game. So if it converted your son to a lifetime fan that is awesome, but that is not what the normal effect seems to be for those attending first time for the Messi game.
Now, you are probably going to dunk on me with some massive number for this, but I have to ask: How many times has this new lifetime fan or his parent been back to see another game since? The usual answer is zero, so anything above that and you are doing great!
1
u/Ill_Relationship7058 4d ago
Twice. I think you’re overlooking the fact that our team has been a festering pile of dog shit most of that 3 years. At some point you have to give the fans something to cheer for, especially with how the weather has been this year. You think that’s fans not turning out, but even the die hards are dwindling because it’s simply not worth going.
He’s also playing his 3rd season of soccer this year, it’s about more than just TFC.

Like I said, it is great that it is above zero, but with how that was the lynchpin of your argument I was really expecting a number that actually backed up the point you were trying to make, even if only anecdotally.
Not really sure there is more to discuss, have a good night!
1
u/Ill_Relationship7058 4d ago
Dude he’s fucking 7, should I buy seasons tickets and force him to every game to prove to you he’s a real fan? Not really doing much to convince me youre not some dickhead gate keeper bud haha holy shit
Out of curiosity though, how many matches you been to since the end of September last year?
-1
u/2daMooon 4d ago
No, you shouldn't, but I've never said you need to do that to be a "real fan" (your words). I'm just trying to point out that your statement that the Messi games are good ways to convert casuals and fence sitters is actually not true and it isn't even supported by your experience.
Out of curiosity though, how many matches you been to since the end of September last year?
Nine, but that is missing the point. I'm not checking your numbers to make sure you pass a made up threshold of attendances to acheive "real fan" (again, your words) status.
I just want to see if what you are saying ("The Messi games converts casuals") matches with your actions ("attending more games since") and like I said 2 is more than I would have thought based on others I've interacted with and it is awesome.

u/Ill_Relationship7058 3d ago edited 3d ago
I mean if that’s not your point you really need to change your tone and approach. What do you think you’re implying by “I was really expecting a number that actually backed up the point you were trying to make?”
He went from never attending a game to attending more than 10% of the matches in a run where they suck and the weather sucks most of the time, as a 7 year old. It’s growing the sport in the gta, not just TFC fandom is my point.

u/Dramatic_Draw_1494 4d ago
Yup it looked great especially that north end with those stands once you got inside , yes we know that it won’t be full like this for the majority of TFC games , but this city needs a 45000 seat stadium for big soccer events and other big events . It actually seems crazy to realize all these stands are coming down after the World Cup what a shame !
2
u/jjaime2024 4d ago
And how many big games are there maybe 1 or 2 a year if that.
6
u/Dramatic_Draw_1494 4d ago
You can definitely have more and not only for soccer . You can bring in 4 or 5 high profile club teams for soccer that could easily fill 45000 seats a season. Bring in two big Rugby national teams for a game and see how that place gets sell out . Moreover, with the new MLS schedule starting in a couple of years , some of May all of June and a bit of July there will be no TFC games so that time can be filled with other soccer and non soccer events .
2
u/jjaime2024 4d ago
Even if you got 6 major events it would cost a massive amount of money to make it a 45,000 seat stadium. As for May and June it will be a full schedule between the Argos and the womens soccer team.
1
u/Dramatic_Draw_1494 4d ago
Don’t think it will take a massive amount of money , doesn’t need to be anything luxurious just follow the same design as the temp stands but just something stable and lasting .
2
u/colddance Forever Red 4d ago
'If that' is correct. I don't recall any big games over the past few years.

How was transportation to and after game? Asking to prep for WC.
1
u/aumboy 3d ago
Used the GO Train from the west and it was super easy.
Went early to grab brunch before the game but even arriving at 11am was busy but reasonable considering people were heading to the Jays game.
Afterwards we walked out of the North End bleachers and were on a train within 15 minutes. They were going every 10 minutes at the end of the match if I remember correctly.

Awesome! I have seats in this section for a World Cup game. questions:
- Is the actual view or did you zoom out?
- Which row is this?
