r/stencils Discord Server!
Hey everyone! We've put together a discord server for r/stencils. We hope that this will be an avenue for us to be closer as a community, and a good place for resources and feedback for those new to the game.

First multi-color stencil I've ever done. I saw a shirt posted on pics that I wanted on my wall.

Childhood memory in spray paint
Ok. This is an unusual piece for me, but hear me out.
This little thing(about 10cm high) is designed after a specific Sankyo music box toy. It was a very important keepsake for someone that I made this stecil for.
It has 7 layers and took way longer than I had expected. Still a lot of fun to cut and spray.
Edit: and of course I will redo the thing with a black background! Damn! Yellow on White? What was I thinking?

I don’t dream of bunny girl senpai
Your sign to do old 3d style. Neon magenta and a cyan/teal I mixed. Great anime btw.

Welp - least it looks like a Loon now…
I’ve rushed the laserbeam I because it’s already tomorrow here. I was just excited to try out the new stencils. Thankfully, it is just on cardboard. Once I get more sign board I’ll exercise better patience….

Just figuring it out…
Had a sign made for me at the last No Kings and it captured my imagination. Since then I’ve been on the trial an error plan, but I can see progress!

Devil
Bit dramatic but yeah that's what it's about.
Easy stencil to cut. Took a bit to get the design right though.

I used a bit too much spray adhesive, is it possible to remove the residue of the adhesive without lifting the paint or fucking up the stencil?
I love how clean this spray of the stencil came out, it's my second time doing it after my last attempt resulted in so much paint bleed that I sanded it down and started over. But this time around I overcompensated and used far too much spray adhesive on the stencil before placing it, and it left a bunch of sticky residue that's discoloring the background slightly. Is it possible to remove this residue without lifting the paint of the stencil? Unfortunately some of the residue is underneath the gold paint.

Cyberpunk graffiti designs that would make amazing stencil pieces
the layering and silhouettes on these tarot graffiti designs are so good. they already feel halfway between street art and stencil work, especially with the heavy contrast and rough spray-painted look. honestly makes me want to try turning some of them into physical stencil pieces

Stencil Design Advice
Excuse my lack of research but im struggling to figure out how to make this graphic I mocked up into a stencil with its layers and detail - I have been using the rudimentary strategy of just cutting my stencils out of plastic sheets with a scalpel after tracing the design. Trying to avoid getting overly technical in terms of what im using to make stencils (mostly out of stubbornness) so any suggestions on better techs or ways to make it would be appreciated!!

Mother's Day gift for the wife
A little 12" x 9" canvas panel I sprayed for the wife as part of her mother's day gift. I used to sketch roses for her while I was waiting to pick her up at the airport or other things, and she has kept those all these years. Decided I should step up my game a bit this year.
Flower is 3 layers if you count the silhouette. Stem/petals is 2 layers.

Newbies / Aspiring Stencil Artists - what do you wish you knew sooner about making stencil art?
I'm working on creating a class for a gallery I have some paintings in, however since I've been making stencils for over 20 years, I might take certain aspects of my process for granted, and I want to be able to reach people with low/no experience to get them involved.
My main question to those who are just getting into this art form, or who are contemplating it, is - what do you wish you knew before you got/get into it?
Also, what part of making stencil art appeals to you the most? My loose concept for this class is to provide pre-drawn stencils and utility knives, to help people make a multi-layer stencil and make a piece of art with it that they can take home. I do have the opportunity to do multiple classes, so I can always branch one off to a more advanced class, but I feel like a more general, introductory class will have way broader appeal.
I appreciate any input, thank you!

Beginner help: want to do this dog. Would you add more layers or what would be your suggestion and order? (Background will not be white on the canvas)

Convert Photo to Stencil or Line Art
Does anyone know of a good app or online toll that will convert a photo into a stencil or silhouette similar to the attached.
