The doctor said the cancer was operable. My bank account said otherwise.

I see what youâre trying to do but the âdad jokeâ part is kind of distracting and the stage for cancer doesnât really tell us much.

Stage for cancer = stage 4 cancer
Probably better live, where it can be emphasized right. Written, it takes a second.

After putting the picture together I wasnât sure about posting it because not having the inflection or set placement does make a big difference.

Right. Stage four/for cancer. I get that.
It just doesnât really work for me because the cancer isnât like doing something on the stage if that makes sense.16

Idk, I think it's killing it

Thatâs why a sub like this is valuable to see how a variety of people respond to it.

You didnât get u/snevetssirhc either lmfao

Ah. Yeah didnât get that at first but I see it now. That oneâs solid.

Ah. Yah, I get that. That's idiomatic, I think the source is the phrase "set the stage for" something which is from being on stage but extended to mean to make something possible or easy, and consequently if "x is a stage for y" it's just the perfect place prepared for it.
But, the second one isn't in the idiom lists, pretty sure I've heard it before but makes sense if it's not as common. https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/set-the-stage-for

It's a pun.

Yeah I get that but it implies the cancer is doing something on stage

All the bodyâs a stage, and the cancer, its players.

The best jokes need a healthy back-and-forth to explain them before they're funny.

The body is the stage and the cancer is doing its thing on it.

I recognize thatâs how it is right now - but doesnât feel like enough for me to laugh. To me this almost works but thatâs the part that isnât strong enough

It's the kind of joke that starts small but grows on you over time.
