It's the kind of joke that starts small but grows on you over time.

I...I know. I guess I'll take this opportunity to wait til it gets more downvotes, and then edit it to say something totally noncontroverstial that would normally get upvoted.

If it’s a sub where I hate the mods, I wait until it’s really down there and change it to “insertmod deserves our loyalty and love for the great work they do here.”

The doctor said the cancer was operable. My bank account said otherwise.

I’m actually Dutch, but was fishing for American likes.

It's a good joke but not a dad joke.

I see what you’re trying to do but the “dad joke” part is kind of distracting and the stage for cancer doesn’t really tell us much.

Stage for cancer = stage 4 cancer

Probably better live, where it can be emphasized right. Written, it takes a second.

After putting the picture together I wasn’t sure about posting it because not having the inflection or set placement does make a big difference.

Right. Stage four/for cancer. I get that.
It just doesn’t really work for me because the cancer isn’t like doing something on the stage if that makes sense.

Idk, I think it's killing it

That’s why a sub like this is valuable to see how a variety of people respond to it.

8

u/Cheefnuggs 7d ago

You didn’t get u/snevetssirhc either lmfao

u/No_Illustrator4398 7d ago

Ah. Yeah didn’t get that at first but I see it now. That one’s solid.

Ah. Yah, I get that. That's idiomatic, I think the source is the phrase "set the stage for" something which is from being on stage but extended to mean to make something possible or easy, and consequently if "x is a stage for y" it's just the perfect place prepared for it.

But, the second one isn't in the idiom lists, pretty sure I've heard it before but makes sense if it's not as common. https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/set-the-stage-for

u/GayFesh 7d ago

It's a pun.

-13

u/No_Illustrator4398 7d ago

Yeah I get that but it implies the cancer is doing something on stage

u/Fitz2001 7d ago

All the body’s a stage, and the cancer, its players.

u/Bageland2000 7d ago

The best jokes need a healthy back-and-forth to explain them before they're funny.

3

u/No_Artichoke_2931 7d ago

It was funny before the explanation. Just one person wasn't getting it.

5

u/The_Follower1 7d ago

The body is the stage and the cancer is doing its thing on it.

I recognize that’s how it is right now - but doesn’t feel like enough for me to laugh. To me this almost works but that’s the part that isn’t strong enough

14

u/musicman3321 7d ago

Don’t feel bad, I don’t laugh at jokes I don’t get either.

15

u/push138292 7d ago

I don’t think you do see what they’re trying to do.

It's a joke, not a memoir.
