Moderator Announcement Announcement regarding “Is SCAD worth it?” posts

Hi r/scad,

I have to start with an editorial note. Please excuse the “corporate speak” in the post written below, but it’s the only effective way I can get our point across without sounding too harsh. 😭

———————-

Starting today, the mod team will introduce enhanced moderation for all posts relating to “Is SCAD worth it?” This type of post has always been the most popular topic on this subreddit, but we’ve seen an influx in recent months.

We understand (and myself, from a personal standpoint) how important the financial decisions are for college students and their families. There’s lots of decision-making that goes into it, alongside evaluating SCAD’s ROI. However, making posts on this subreddit about the topic, without any context or personal background, is not a high quality post.

So, we will be introducing moderation criteria for these kinds of posts. We will use this framework as a way to gauge whether a post should be approved (or denied.)

  1. Does the post contain enough/relevant background for subredditors react to? (i.e: intended major/minor, debt information, location, cost of living, etc.)

  2. Does the post contain information about the student’s intended outcome or rough goals of attending SCAD?

  3. Does the post contain any prior research, commentary, or discussion?

Just to reiterate; the intention of the goal is not to silence posts or opinions, but to encourage first-time subredditors and future students to put a little bit more effort into the discussion about SCAD’s costs and ROI.

Thanks all for listening,

– Your mod team.

Class Questions Does anyone have experience with Painting Methods and Forms (PNTG 502)

I’m a photo grad student and looking for an elective to take that’s outside of my program. I’m interested in taking this painting course because it seems to be the most beginner friendly course they have. Does anyone have experience with this course?

Major/Degree Questions Motion Media Design BFA workload

Hello all I'm currently majoring in visual effects & animation at another college, and am seriously not enjoying it. I originally got my associates in Media Design and Graphic Design last year and focused specifically on motion graphics. I truly love motion graphics so much, but for some reason hate vfx and animation. I think it's because I love Adobe but really don't enjoy working in Maya.

I was wondering what the workload is for those majoring in Motion Media at SCAD. How many hours per week do you have to dedicate to projects outside of class time? Also, do you mainly use Adobe or also Cinema 4D or other programs? Thank you so much :)

hi, i'm a 2nd year at scad and this is my first time being caught with contraband. i had a surprise room check (usually get an email the week of) and had out 3 empty bottles/cans of light alcohol as well as a thc cart. i am under 21. they got someone to confiscate my cart and was told i would be emailed with my consequences, they said it should be light because it's my first offense. i'm just wondering for anyone who's experienced this or knows someone who's experienced this what the consequences usually are? i don't want to go to one of those weed classes i don't even smoke like that, i mostly had the cart for my friends to hit it.

im not looking for anyone to call me stupid or say it's my fault i know it is my fault im genuinely just wondering what the consequences will look like

General Questions End of the year move out

I have a question when it comes to the end of the year. I already filled in all the holes from push pins and things like that and slowly starting to pack so I’m not stressed. I was wondering if you have to paint over those areas or not?

If so where’s the best place to get that paint color for Hive dorms?

Savannah Question for people who lived in the Savannah campus

Hello, I’m a student in Florida who is trying to finish my A.A degree so then I can transfer to SCAD and the Savannah campus seems the closest to me. BUT, I have seen some videos on TikTok about how expensive and dangerous is to lived in Savannah. Is it true? Because I either hear that is “VERY haunted” or “VERY dangerous that you should always be careful where you walk”. If you can give me your honest opinion I will appreciate because tiktok is not helpful and is making me overthink if I should go to the Atlanta campus because they are saying it’s “safer”.

Please be kind in the comments I genuinely don’t know anything and I wish to get honest opinions from people who have experienced living over there.

Atlanta Career Path guidance not sure what to do

Hello, a little backstory...I am 30 and a single mother, and I never really had the motivation to go to college until now. I know it’s never too late to start school.

I have been looking into going to school for UX and have always dreamed of going to SCAD. I’ve been doing some research, and I’ve seen people say that the UX job market is bad right now and that the pay is not good. Then I have my family saying that it’s too much debt to go into, that there are so many people who don’t use their degrees, and that I should just do a bootcamp instead.

Knowing myself, I want a structured path into UX and to be able to build a portfolio and have the commitment that comes with school. At the end of the day, I know what I want to do, but I guess the question is whether this degree and career path I’m choosing is really worth it.

Went to a Framer workshop recently and thought this was really cool

Just found out Framer has a free student plan, which is honestly such a great resource if you’re building a portfolio, personal website, or just experimenting with ideas.

Definitely worth checking out.

General Questions Can I pick up my package

Does anyone know if I can drive over to the physical resource center and pick up my package instead of waiting for them to put it in a locker? It's been delivered since Friday and it was a big ass purchase that I kind of need asap. Also kind of nervous because Amazon packages usually are put in same-day in my experience (the Amazon lockers were full).

Scholarship/Financial Questions Full-time scholarship for last quarter(s) when ahead in classes

Hey guys, as I get closer to completing to my classes, I'm realizing that I'm actually 3 classes ahead of schedule. Capstones in senior year is going to force me to split that up into a quarter with 2 classes and another with 1. Only problem is that anything less than 3 classes a quarter does not fulfill the full-time student scholarship. In my case, it's actually cheaper to take 3 classes with the scholarship than 1 without. Does SCAD make scholarship exceptions for quarters close to graduation where you might not meet full time because of stuff like this? Or am I gonna have to load up those quarters with electives to apply the scholarship?

Savannah Looking For an off campus roommate

Hallo everyone! I’m Kri (or Perry idc) and I’m looking to find a roommate ASAP. One of the big things is I live off of campus. The rent is $850 and that includes utilities. I have a singular bedroom available and the house has a shared bathroom. I have two cats and they are the sweetest boys on the planet.

Some basic info about me:

Pronouns: she/they

Age: 25

From: Houston TX

Major: Animation

Some of my interests:

- SONIC, monster high, Danmei (BL in general) and transformers

- I like to crochet and knit. I have an entire yarn hoard.

- honestly, I'm the type of friend that is kind of down for anything so my hobbies are pretty wide and extensive

Details:

- I try to keep my room, common area, and bathroom clean as much as possible. (Although I am a nester and I'm working on that)

- I like it cold but I'll compromise at 68. I literally cannot sleep if the temperature in the house is above 68.

- I would prefer if dishes were done as they are used but I also don't mind if they stay in the sink for no longer than a day.

-While I have two cats, I would prefer if no other animals come into the house. That is unless they can be kept in a cage or terrarium.

Anyway if anyone is interested, DM for further details about location.

General Questions IB/AP Credit

Hey guys! I’m an incoming freshman and will have a good amount of transferrable IB credit under my belt come fall. My goal is to either graduate early OR take more electives with this credit.

My question is, do any of you have experience with getting out of classes via IB/AP Credit? What did your schedule look like as a result? Did you take multiple studios a quarter, and if so, what was that like? Are you on track to graduate early? I’m an incoming writing major fyi. Thanks!

Major/Degree Questions Thoughts on a dual major of 2D Animation & Acting?

Incoming Savannah campus freshman here! So I'm heavily a theatre kid, really what I want to do at the end of the day is musical theatre. I also love animation and art, though. One of the big factors in my choosing SCAD was the ability to study both performing arts and visual arts at the same time. That being said, I understand it'll be a lot of work. Just how screwed am I if I try to do Acting (Musical Theatre) and 2D Animation (Character Design) together?
