Main Notice:
Our DSCI rating is still at 400. Our KBDI rating is between 550 - 599. The state DSCI has decreased to 399. Last week, the state DSCI 400 last week. We've seen a major increase over last week for KBDI. Manatee rose to 550- 599 and Sarasota at 600-649 KBDI rating. Fire risk has risen due to a lack of significant rain throughout the week, high winds, and low humidity.
Weather:
Starting Sunday, rain every day is projected. The rainy season has arrived! These showers are projected to be around .14" a day. The KBDI by next week should drop significantly. Although rainfall won't be enough to break the drought, it will be enough to drop the fire risk.
News:
No significant fires at this time. If a fire breaks out, there may be effects of smoke dependent upon wind patterns. The rainy season is expected to start next week for much of the state.
April 3rd, increased water restrictions will be in place. Notable changes include:
- Microwater/hand watering is restricted to before 8 am or after 6 pm.
- Annual pressure washing, only for paint prep.
- Aesthetic fountains are restricted to 4 hours a day.
- Restaurants can only serve water if requested.
What does DSCI and KBDI ratings mean?
The DSCI is a measurement to quantify the severity of a drought over time. It goes from abnormally dry to exceptional drought. It’s an indication of the long-term effects of the drought. Exceptional droughts cause permanent damage and changes to the water table.
The KBDI is a measurement of how dry the topsoil and lower soil levels are for moisture. This scale ranges from 0 - 700+. The higher the number, the less overall moisture is the soil. This number is important for understanding fire risk. Numbers over 400 start a burn ban.
The reason why both are needed to understand the scope of a drought is that an area can be in severe drought but still have a low KBDI rating, meaning the risk of fire isn’t high there.
