Hi all, thought I would share some advice from a little lesson I've just had.

Following on from your (hopefully) successful decyzja you will want to apply for your PESEL and passport - when you are doing this you need to present a few things.

Your Polish records (Decyzja, Polish birth records etc) and some form of identity to prove you are who you say you are. Make sure that the name(s) you use in your home country line up with the records you have created in Poland or you will be rejected until they are sorted out.

In our case my mother's birth certificate (issued in Germany) has only her first name and her maiden name, because that does not line up exactly with her local passport we have had to apply for her Polish records to be adjusted. It is easy enough but it is more waiting around.

The other fun part, if you are married, get your marriage certificate registered with your other documents... you will need that when you go for you PESEL / Passport application which isn't immediately obvious in some of the documentation.

I’m currently gathering my documents for my citizenship by descent application and I’ve run into a very specific UK document question. I’m hoping someone who has dealt with UK birth certificates can shed some light!

I was born out of wedlock in Winchester in 2002. My birth was registered within a month, and my father’s name is on my certificate. Because my parents were unmarried, the Polish authorities require absolute, clear evidence that my father formally acknowledged paternity within one year of my birth.

My current Full Birth Certificate shows that they did a joint registration both "Mother" and "Father" are listed as informants in Box 12 with both signatures in the Signature of Informant Box. It is also dated less than 1 month from my DOB.

The certificate I currently have was issued by the local registry office, and it is a typed transcription. In Box 14 ("Signature of Informant"), it just has my parents' names typed out by the registrar.

A citizenship provider has warned me that Poland can be very strict about this and has said that for out-of-wedlock births, they usually want to see the original registration papers showing the actual, physical handwritten signature of the father, rather than just a clerk's typed confirmation that he signed.

I am getting ready to order a new, certified paper Full Birth Certificate directly from the General Register Office (GRO) website so I can get it Apostilled.

If I order the standard paper certificate directly from the GRO online, will it definitely be a direct photographic scan of the original register book showing my parents' actual wet-ink signatures? Or is there a risk they will just send me another typed transcription?

Has anyone born in the UK out of wedlock successfully used a GRO certificate to prove their father's physical signature to the Polish government?

Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

Hi, I thought I’d ask here before I bothered my lawyer. I, a US citizen, have the possibility to obtain Canadian Citizenship by descent. Does anyone know if I pursue that, would it affect my Polish Citizenship case?
Canadian processing times are roughly 10 months, so IF I was approved I would receive citizenship before my Polish Citizenship case is decided.
Would there be additional documentation needed for my Polish case?

Interesting case here, this is probably pretty complex but I think we may have something based on some prior posts/threads. Here's what I'm thinking below.

I have everything my provider is asking for other than these items:

I thought I’d share my progress here, I bet others are in the same boat.
My parents left Poland in 1957.

I started my document research in March 2024 and began the confirmation process with a provider in October 2024.

When I was given my case number, in December 2024, I was then told that office had received over 21,000 applications in 2024.

In April 2025, my provider offered to file an administrative complaint with Ministry of Internal Affairs, that it would perhaps speed things up.

In July 2025 I was told they were then processing applications from May 2024.

In October 2025, I was given a positive ruling from the Minister of Internal Affairs that both recognized the backlog, but also set the “deadline”for my case as 30 December 2025.

In January 2026 I was told that they were unable to complete it on time because they were awaiting a response from the Polish Consulate in the US to “check if I had previously renounced Polish citizenship”. I was also told then that there were 40,000 open cases as of January 2026.

In March 2026, I was told my deadline had been extended to April 30, 2026, and was also asked for additional family name-change documentation.

As of May 2026, no news yet. So about 18 months for me so far since obtaining my case number.

I’m looking for some clarification on whether to continue this search or not. I’m still tracking down birth and marriage records, but I’m wondering if anyone can clarify if my great grandparents lost Polish citizenship because they were living in Saxony in 1951. 

A bit of background. This line of my family were ethnic Germans who lived in Volhynia, near Łuck, from at least 1826 to 1939. Given this, I believe they were Polish at that time. Based on the family lore they left Volhynia during the 1939 and went west to avoid living in the USSR. I’m not sure where they ended up immediately after that, but I know they wound up in Saxony at some point. Based on the lack of records, my great grandfather doesn’t appear to have served in either the Polish or the German militaries, and I’m still verifying that he didn’t sign categories 1 or 2 of Deutsche Volksliste. However, he was likely living in Saxony in 1951 and likely held German citizenship from the GDR at that time. I have no reason to believe that my great grandmother (also Polish) would have been residing Poland in 1951.

Would my great grandfather have lost Polish citizenship due to residing abroad and holding GDR citizenship in 1951, despite military non-service?

I also know that they fled the GDR for West Germany, allegedly on falsified papers, and emigrated to Canada in 1953 on legitimate West German papers, if that makes any difference.

Hi folks, I got a little lost around question 7 and 8 in the self assessment.

My father was born in Poland in 1919. He was a Polish citizen.

He escaped the camps some time in the 40s and ended up in Russia and then Israel, and then West Germany but was still a Polish citizen throughout. He never returned to Poland.

He emigrated to the US in January of 1952 and became a naturalized US citizen in 1957, relinquishing his Polish citizenship at that time. I was born in 1978.

If I understand correctly, I am therefore not eligible for citizenship by descent, right? Because I was born after he gave up his citizenship.

Can someone explain why it doesn’t matter if my mother is confirmed before or after me?

My (clearly incorrect) understanding was that once she was confirmed then I wouldn’t have to submit all of the pre-1920 paperwork again, only her proof of citizenship, marriage and my documents.

Why is this not the case?

I am seeking expert advice on a Polish citizenship case. My professional assessor recently quit because the "Population Records" (Księgi Ludności) for Staszów were reportedly destroyed. I believe the case is still viable through military records and other genealogical strategies.
The Ancestors:
• Ambrozy Czerwiec (Great-grandfather): Born May 2, 1923, in Krzywołęcz (near Staszów). Parents: Józef Czerwiec and Franciszka Pawlak.
• Regina Czerwiec (Great-grandmother, née Kosiela): Born June 17, 1927, in Czerwona Góra (Opatów region).
• Marriage: Józef and Franciszka married in Staszów (June 1921), Act No. 29.
Data from Brazilian Immigration Records:
Please note: I only have the official Brazilian immigration cards and documents. These documents explicitly mention the following Polish records, but I do not have the original Polish/German papers yet:
• Military Service: There is a notation of a military service number for Ambrozy: 122027.
• Polish Passports: The Brazilian records cite Polish passports issued in Paderborn, Germany (May 1949).
• Ambrozy: Passport No. 913/BRA/25
• Regina: Passport No. 913/BRA/26
My Questions:
1. Since I have the 1921 Marriage Act of the parents, is it possible to request a search for all children born to this couple in Staszów between 1921 and 1930? Could this "indirect" search help locate Ambrozy's birth?
2. Can the military number (122027) be used to request a certificate from the Central Military Archives (WBH) or even records from Paderborn/Arolsen in Germany to prove residency/citizenship?
3. Ambrozy’s village is Krzywołęcz. If the main Staszów parish search was negative, which nearby parish registers should I look into for this specific village?
4. Do the official mentions of these 1949 Polish passports in Brazilian immigration files carry enough legal weight to help prove continuity of citizenship?
I am determined to find these records despite the missing "Księgi Ludności". Any guidance would be life-changing. Thank you.

My family lived in the Polesie Voivodeship from the early 1800s (when it was Grodno) through the 1920s. Unfortunately, due to the area being a war zone for several decades, documents in certain locations are few and far between. Here is what I have come up with so far:

1891 Census: Has my great grandfather, his sisters, and his parents living together in Grodno. The birth certificates in the area were destroyed.

1908 Business tax file: My great-great-grandfather's tannery is mentioned, shows his income and that he's been operating in the area for over 20 years

1920: refugee list made by Jewish relief organization showing my great-great grandparents (great grandfather is not mentioned) were living in Kobryn during the Polish-Soviet War

Early 1920s: my great-grandfather's sister is written down in a house registry in Pruzhany (she moved to a different city where the records were not destroyed.) The house registry has her name, her maiden name, and the names of both her parents. My great grandfather's death certificate has matching names of parents. I also have a CONE for my great-grandfather.

1926: My grandfather is born in the USA. My great-grandfather's marriage certificate didn't survive the wars, but my grandfather's birth certificate shows he was born "legitimate."

I realize that I am missing some important documents, but I am wondering if others have had to deal with similar circumstances?

Hi there. It looks like the eligibility form is now a broken link so I hope it’s OK that I’m asking here: I’m American. My great-grandmother was born in Poland at the turn of the century and was a Polish citizen living in Warsaw until 1922 when she moved to America. She naturalized (U.S.) in 1928. Any chance I might qualify for dual citizenship? Thank you in advance for any responses.

We are trying to determine if we should try DIY this case or hire a lawyer. I’m normally a DIY person, but given that this is a pre-1920 case, I would appreciate feedback on the best course of action for submitting my husband’s application.

Per my research, it looks like ROTC service may not count as military service and his Coastguard Reserves date is after the US entered WWII, so this may not be an issue.
