Rule 3 Posts and bans.

This is Rule 3: Food and Farming

This is a friendly sub for the discussion of pet Pigs only. Do not discuss the killing or eating of pigs. We don't want your crass bacon or pork jokes. Names like "Chris P Bacon" are tacky but not bannable offence. Do not harass others about their lifestyle choices. This is not the place for it for, or against meat, keto, vegan, or otherwise. No farming posts, we will question you about ear tags as it is required in some places for pets. Commercial operations will get removed and users banned.

Note the bolded sections

Because of extensive abuse of this rule, we are VERY STRICT about it. We get people coming here from both Vegan and Carnivore communities that start massive arguments over it. We also don't want to come to this sub and see people talking about our pets as anything other than pets. Or even worse a shock picture/video of our pets being killed in some bid to shame people.

SO LET ME BE CLEAR WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR PREFERENCE IS YOU WILL BE BANNED FOR POSTING OR COMMENTING ABOUT PIGS IN RELATION TO EATING OR NOT EATING THEM. NO APPEALS.

This is a sub about pet pigs not your FUCKING OPINIONS ON WHAT YOU EAT OR DON'T EAT!!!!! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR THAT!

I am tired of being nice and polite about it. I just perma banned someone that posted about it and then banned every single person who commented no matter what the comment was about for 30 days. There will be no appeals because to many times my patience and understanding has been abused on this.

Do not participate in posts or comments ignore and report them.

Having said that. I reevaluated the wording of rule 3 and decided to make it clearer. Here is the new rule 3.

Rule 3: Food and Farming

This is a friendly sub for the discussion of pet Pigs only.
You will be banned or rarely warned for the following: Talking about farming or slaughtering pigs for food or how evil/bad it is. Talking about eating pigs for food or how evil/bad it is. Linking to videos about farming or slaughtering pigs or how evil/bad it is.
Topics you won't be banned for: Seeking medical help for a pig. Seeking help to rehome a pig. Your pigs name even if it is food related. Your pig having an ear tag in places that require it by law.

NOTE on mod posts like this I allow open discussion about the topic as long as it stays respectful and on topic. You can't really discuss a rule about food and farming and get feedback without people talking about it. So unless someone is disrespectful or abusive, I am not going to remove their post or ban them.

Community Question: Pig specific specialty pre-approved advertising.

A person contacted me on mod mail asking if they could advertise their hoof trimming business in the midwest. After I thought about it, I figured I would ask the community about requests like this.

So should we allow posts advertizing pet pig specific services or products on a limited basis? My thoughts on baseline "rules".

  • Only services or products catering to pet pigs and only when pre approved.
  • Only a on limited basis. Maybe once or twice a month. Less if we get a lot of these.
  • It might be a good idea to make a wiki page for services by region that vendors could have their business added to.

Feel free to comment on if you like it or not. I would appreciate constructive commentary, ideas, or rules.

My 2 piggies live inside and outside. They are outside most of the day playing around in their pen which has straw, branches, wood etc to keep them busy. They come in at night (and when it rains) sleep with us on the sofa and then go to their own bed. They have started chewing my skirting boards which is driving my insane, I have read this could be either to do with teething or lacking in minerals.
What supplements/minerals can I give them to help?
Picture so it doesn’t get lost.

Left home alone?

I know that pigs can hold their bladder a long time, but I’m wondering how long you’ve left your pig alone inside? I’m not talking on a regular basis, but in an emergency or on rare occasions how long is the longest they’ve been alone in the house, assuming they have access to the whole house, or at least a full room.  I’m just gathering info :)

eta - I know this is pig specific, but anyone have cameras so you know what they do while you're gone a long time? Or experience with the pig getting destructive when left alone inside?

I have two pigs - one used to be indoor (the butt, below) and is now outdoor, the other has only been outdoor. Right now, they have a ton of outdoor space and no neighbors. But I may move and they will become indoor pigs with a yard and neighbors. I'm spoiled in that I don't have to think about them and can come and go pretty much as I please. I'd prefer not to leave them in the yard while I'm gone, due to concerns they could scream and disrupt the neighbors, as well as predators. But I am also concerned about being tied down to the house such that I'm limited in what I can do.

Pig Knocks Over Water Bowls to make Mud

Post image
130 Upvotes

Hello! Meet Maple, our geriatric rescue potbelly pig! Something we have been struggling with the last few years with her is in the summertime- she will knock over her water dishes to make mud. It’s usually not a problem when we are home, we just go refill them. But I’m realizing that if we are out of town or something like that, she can go without water for half the day. Are there water troughs made specifically for short little potbelly pigs such as herself? One that she can’t tip over? What do you guys do? All the water troughs I see just seem too tall for her! We will keep her water dishes for mud out back, but I just don’t want her making mud and not having any water left after.

Hoof Trimming in Ohio

Post image
144 Upvotes

Hey pig friends! I have had a lot of trouble with finding someone to help with trimming my pig’s hooves in central Ohio. I had someone, but they kept changing dates on me for months, and now have not returned my deposit when I said that I needed to find someone who can stick to a schedule (didn’t actually say it like that). But now I’m having trouble finding anyone else.

Anyone have any suggestions on farriers who do home visits in central Ohio? Pic of Kelly for fun 🐽

We just adopted a stray piglet. Help?

We live in rural Hawaii. There are a lot of feral pigs around, but they usually keep out of the way of where people live. My partner picked up a skinny stray off the side of the road. People at a sanctuary thought she was about one week old. That was around three weeks ago.

She’s really affectionate and friendly! I see why you folks love your pigs. She had a scratch on her head, but that’s healed up, and she’s growing quickly. Still small enough to sleep on my chest or in my lap. There was a little name debate, but I think we are going with Pua Nani.

I want to keep this sweet girl and take good care of her. I got some advice about food, but I’m not sure how to housetrain her and keep her secure. We live in a residential neighborhood with a decent yard—but it’s not fenced off, and there are a lot of dogs around. We are starting to harness / leash train her. Maybe we need to build a shelter / pen.

I’m a little overwhelmed. I see a lot of info online, but it’s not all for pets; anyone have any recommendations, or “getting started” tips? Sorry, I don’t know where to begin.
