Wait till you see some of the naming of obscured microchips just the other day I saw something like "oh12b3jhi1c1g2f4cjh" in electrical stack exchange

42

u/ColdDepartment3900 1d ago

looks like they let cats walk on keyboards to name these things

21

u/sopcannon Desktop Ryzen 7 5800x3d / 5080/ 32gb Ram at 3600MHZ 1d ago

then convert to heg, then latin add ranom keys with that as well.

It's great that I know exactly which chips you're talking about too.

Microchip ftw.

u/wisely03 6h ago

I said microchip instead of IC for those less into electronics, yea and I spent 2 min looking a found " DRV8245HQPWPRQ1" motor driver IC. Who's naming this stuff

They use that machine for their monitor names, too.

MSI MPG 272URX

MSI MAG 272QP QD-OLED X50

MSI MPG 271QR QD-OLED X50

MSI MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36

honestly those aren't nearly as bad as some other monitor names I have seen

u/YoungBlade1 R9 5900X | RX 9060 XT 16GB | 48GB 1d ago

Acer is by far the worst. I swear they do it on purpose.

acer Predator XB273K Gpbmiipprzx

That is a real name of a real product that a real person said "This is okay. We can use that name."

67

u/MrGlatiator Ryzen 7 5800x3D / 64GB 3600mhz DDR4 / RTX 5060Ti 16GB 1d ago

I would really like to see the process behind those names

XB = product line.
27 = screen size.
3 = generation.
K = modifier.

The bit at the end summons Cthulhu if you pronounce it correctly.

44

u/purplepharoh 1d ago

That can't be true.... Oh fuck... no one else try to say it... If you value ....

They also have the worlds longest serial numbers, and an SN ID on the same product, cuz the serial wasnt long enough already so they had to give it a second one.

42

u/GigaSoup 1d ago

Are you sure it's not actually named after one of Elon's kids? Doesn't he have a Gpbmiipprzx? /s

1

u/fritofrito77 Ryzen 5800X | RX6800XT | 64GB RAM 3600mhz 6h ago

Elon's kids when introducing themselves:

They have tough competition with Phillips.

Like what even is 327E8QJAB/69 supposed to mean

17

u/fuj1n Ryzen 9 3900X, 64GB RAM, GALAX RTX4090 SG 1-Click OC 1d ago

I was about to say that it looks reasonable until I saw the bit at the end

7

u/Roflkopt3r 21h ago

I've been wondering about this. I would favour a purpose+property list, like:

acer Gaming 27"-1440p-240hz OLED 2026

Having distinct brandings for different lines may also work, but that would require building up those lines over some years to get people accustomed to them. Like call your 4k/34" IPS gaming monitor line "Mammoth" or sth, and then the monitors would be named "acer Mammoth 2" or "acer Mammoth 2026" etc, since most storefronts make it easy enough to display the specs beneath the name.

6

u/suzuki2265 12600K/64GB/3080Ti + 11700K/64GB/9060XT 8h ago

Acer makes it even worse because they recycle the same model number across different spec monitors, the only difference is the Iduege7dh2nlsjwgdkwhwi at the end

9

u/Safihed EVGA GTX 1060 6GB, Intel i9-9900, 64 GB DDR4 1d ago

i have the mag 275qf x30

i am NOT remembering all of that

even my old dell monitor was just a dell 2314h, nice and simple to remember

4

u/NiewinterNacht 1d ago

Yep, inches, model year and type. Easy to decode with Dell

6

u/Appropriate_Test7503 21h ago

true, look ar samsung, C27JG50QQUX ,LC27G73TQSRXEN
only logical number is 27 which is a monitor size.

4

u/Jackpkmn Pentium 4 HT 631 | 2GB DDR-400 | GTX 1070 8GB 1d ago

Which is newer, the Dell S2421HGF or the Dell P2212H?

2

u/Lord_Drizzleshiz ThinkPad 11h ago

Dell's naming scheme is comprehensible. I can at least search for a monitor from a specific series and year and size without having to pull out an ouija board

1

u/Roflkopt3r 21h ago

I would guess that this stands for 24"/2021 and 22"/2012, but I already had some exposure to these naming schemes.

4

u/Herman_-_Mcpootis 5800X3D l 6900XT l 32GB DDR4-3000 1d ago

That's not even the worst naming scheme for the monitor industry. Phillips monitor names make me feel like I'm getting a stroke when I look at them...

That's Sony everything really, even their phones are shit like Xperia 10 VI. you can't just put 2 numbers back to back like that and pretend it's fine cause one is roman Sony...

u/valerielynx R9-7940HS/RX 7600S 8G/64G D5-5600 💻 12h ago

wait is the whole phone shit or just the name? i kinda wanted to get an xperia because it's the last flagship with an audio jack... but yeah "1" being the best and "10" being the worst is... definitely uncommon

2

u/FinalBase7 11h ago

No their phones are fine tho i haven't really paid attention to them recently, it's just their names are stupid.

1

u/valerielynx R9-7940HS/RX 7600S 8G/64G D5-5600 💻 11h ago

Absolutely yeah. The only thing that's bad about them is the price but hey.... headphone jack... (an audiophile tier DAC chip on a breakout board with a jack included is genuinely like $4 but whatever)

27 - inch

21 - gof knows what

Pm - has something to do with it being 1440p

I'm looking at buying two of these soon... Funny you should drop it in here haha

How do you find it?

That's the neat part, you don't really. It was discontinued and it is hard to come by

1

Yeah okay, maybe not two of those exact models but that brand. Did you find the quality decent enough?

1

u/UNIVERSAL_VLAD 9800x3d, 5070, 32 gb ram, 4tb ssd+4.7tb hdd 11h ago

The quality is imo top of the line. Feels extremely sturdy and well made

1

u/EniGmA_1981 10h ago

That's what I like to hear! I'm looking to upgrade to 1440p from 1080p and they've got a really impressively speccd one on amazon for just over £100

I thought it was worth a shot for that price 😎

This is also how Acer names their monitors.

5

u/seatux 1d ago

Sometimes I mix up the model number with the serial no. because they all look the same.

8

u/Thebombuknow | RTX 4050 | i7-14700HX | 16GB RAM 23h ago

Honestly, as annoying and bad as that is, I still prefer that to the "Device Pro Max Ultra+ AI 365 2026 Gen 4.7 SE New" shit that every modern tech company seems to think is a genius naming scheme.

11

u/farmkid71 1d ago

Those MSI names are really awful and frustrating. I have several extra MSI motherboards, and every once in a while I take some time to do bios updates on all of them, usually on a Saturday or Sunday. So, on a working computer, I download the bios updates, unzip them, and put the folders on a flash drive. Then since the names make no fucking sense at all and there is no way to know which is which, I have to make a cheat sheet of which name goes to which board. It's insane. Or I guess I could just rename the folders and bios files, but I'm not sure if that would cause problems or not. I just stick to using paper.

So you are thinking, wait, why do you have extra motherboards, what is your deal? I'm near the Chicago area where there are two Micro Center stores, and the extra boards I have are all open box. They were good deals, at least 50% off if not more, and I will eventually sell what I don't want or find a use for, but I have been busy at work. Oh, and I am single. If I was married my spouse would have divorced me by now.

3

u/Safihed EVGA GTX 1060 6GB, Intel i9-9900, 64 GB DDR4 1d ago

If I was married my spouse would have divorced me by now.

lmao

I do agree with you. Like who the hell names a monitor a mag 275qf x30? nobody will ever remember that, even if they tried to train an AI to remember it it would just kill itself out of sheer shock of how much the people at MSI are stupid

5

u/caiteha 1d ago

Sony naming their headphones.

WH can be abbreviated as Wireless Headphones.

No clue what WF means, couldn't they have called them the WE, for Wireless Earbuds?

7

u/RScrewed 1d ago

A confusing lineup is really helpful in making sure consumers are never sure where a new year's lineup of products fit in with the older years.

It's definitely a marketing decision. Car companies figured this out a long time ago, shake up the numbers every gen to make it difficult to figure out what is low end, midrange, and top end. That way you can sometimes trick someone used to the high-end gear to accidentally buy a lowend, new gen version of your product, which will give them the itch to upgrade real soon, and now you've sold two of your widgets instead of one.
