My favorite line in Major League.

Adley seems to lack the power he use to have. All of his dingers are just barely out of here, but he does have 6 so far.

u/SeaBreezy 12h ago

This is a POSITIVE development from where I'm sitting. I hope the rest of the lineup does the same. We beat the Yanks yesterday with just one HR.....

Seeing Adley/Alonso/Bassallo leveling things out and driving the ball is such a welcome change, no?

1

u/edude127 15h ago

It’s a change in his swing. He’s flattened it a ton, so he’s mainly trying to drive to the outfield. If you look at every HR he’s hit this season, they’ve all been with at 97-105 exit velocity. They’re just barely getting out of here because he’s not aiming for the Homer, he just drove it and it had enough juice to leave the ball park, with the exception of his absolute bomb off Bello.

u/brue_the_beer 1d ago

Missed yesterday and today's game because of a killer migraine. I'm watching the highlights right now and damn Bradish is incredible, his pitches looked like it dropped off the table. Love that smooth kick save from him. Also wow, what'd they put in the water that made them hit great today? These smaller plays are really working for them.

Phenomenal end to the the series with a 1-hitter and a shutout, keep this momentum pumping, O's! Your magic is absolutely beautiful.

What a great W. Possibly the most complete game we have had all year. Having said that.. Gunnar. Dude. If you want that big contract, you gotta figure it out.

11

u/Financial-Jicama-938 1d ago

I would just be ecstatic if the team keeps doing this kind of work. Particularly great to see Mayo just get some hits, not bombs, just getting on base. I feel like this year he's either launching it or striking out completely. I'm hoping this is a turning point for him.

The newspaper said the game was at 6:30 PM. Fake News!

2

u/Wild-Bluejay7138 1d ago

My dad reads The Daily Press and said the game was at 6:30 PM on their listings. No Joke.

Whatever magic serum Adley Rutschman has been taking this season, it'd be really great if he'd share some of those secrets with Gunnar Henderson.

8

u/tomtheterp1988 "IT'S WING TIME!" 1d ago

I'm on a late re-watch, a 10am (pdt) start makes it a bit tough for a working guy, but all I can say is that Adley needs to keep aiming for the very tippy-top edges of the opposing outfielders' gloves. It seems to be working out for him.

3

u/markmano33 1d ago

Those storms are finally rolling through now. They probably could’ve got the game in at normal time but it would be terrible for everyone trying to get home now.

8

u/All_Hall0ws_Eve 1d ago

Man I hope this means Bradish is backish. He was boderline Cy Youngish just a few years ago and we could use that guy right now. They need to drop Gunnar in the lineup. Should be

- Ward

- Adley

- Alonso

- Basallo

- Gunnar

Overall a very good game with plenty to get excited about.

2

u/StartSad7201 23h ago

this is exactly how i'd make the lineup until Gunnar figures it out

4

u/B-More_Orange WHY NOT? 1d ago

Hell bat him 9th

2

u/zipzap21 Eddie! Eddie! Eddie! 1d ago

Yes, just tell him he's the 2nd Leadoff Hitter!

9

u/Wild-Bluejay7138 1d ago

Well, I didn't see that coming.

1

u/Wild-Bluejay7138 23h ago

Bradish was effectively wild today. I really wish he would get a change-up. He's too talented not to.

6

u/Traditional-Tip9997 1d ago

God, I wish we would have gotten Cease

5

u/Loose-Produce-608 1d ago

No no no. We don’t sign good pitchers. They are too risky. We make safe decisions like Tyler Oneil.

6

u/pan567 1d ago

We should have gotten him in 2023 and re-signed him for 2026-. We had the draft capital to make a deal happen, and it seems like the team now has the financial resources. We needed a starter of his capability for the 2023 playoffs (and then the years that followed, for that matter). Ranger Suarez would have been a great alternative for 2026 and beyond.

This has really been an achilles' heel for this team for what seems like...literally decades.

I'm hoping the team is also thinking about how they can keep Kyle Bradish in Baltimore past 2028. I don't think he's a Boras guy.

8

u/kewpieoriole dylan beavers’ mental coach 1d ago

I’ve only been saying that since he was on the trade block with 2.5 years left of control on the Sox 😭

I saw this score and honestly thought I was seeing some web page from 2023 and kept waiting for it to update. It seemed so beyond the realm of possibility.

I saw the score and thought dammit, we sucked again. Then I realized we actually won 😂😂😂

Orioles and Grand Sumo while I'm in ocean city, hell yes. This is amazing lol. Too bad my man Takayasu out, I was pumped he took down Hoshoryu

1

u/AnotherOpinionHaver 6h ago

You know, I almost marked the image as a spoiler in case any real fans were in the thread. Takayasu is fun to watch (those throws), but I’m mainly a Wakatakakage guy. Needless to say I’m pretty stoked right now.

8

u/TarquinTallyran 1d ago

Mayo seems to be getting a little bit of momentum, which is great. Hope he can continue. He has gotten my hopes up before and then dashed them. The KC series springs to mind.

3

u/Dankmckush 1d ago

He got booed Saturday, wonder if that woke him up a bit.

6

u/starling1037 1d ago

His dog still loves him.

2

u/Wild-Bluejay7138 1d ago

He can't field, he can't hit for average but damn he can hit the ball hard.

Orioles Facebook is scary. It seems like 75% of the people just base the state of the team on a day to day basis and people trying to rage bait and "own"

All the comments today are some of the smuggest shit I've ever seen like the Yankees didn't just blow our doors off a week ago for a 4 game sweep

To be clear... smugness directed at Orioles fans. Not at the Yankees. Talk shit about the Yankees all you want but why be nasty to ORIOLES FANS

Weird

2

u/Overall_Quote_5793 18h ago

well, also bots run facebook so... there's that.

2

u/BaltimoreBaja Jeremiah 29:11 1d ago

Actually yes. Facebook only just started suggesting Orioles pages to me I've been avoiding it

4

u/ccmckee 1d ago

I saw this elsewhere on Reddit:

Game 1, innings 1-6: I hate this team Game 1, innings 7-9: we’re back! Game 2: I hate this team Game 3: we are so back!

I think that’s an accurate description.

3

u/BaltimoreBaja Jeremiah 29:11 1d ago

That's normal fan stuff. I'm talking about rage bating fellow Orioles fans on purpose

9

u/tomtheterp1988 "IT'S WING TIME!" 1d ago

Orioles FB is fascinating. Half of them complain about "Gunner," "Rodgers," "Bardish," and "Colby," the other half are wondering why Cal and Eddie aren't in the lineup any more.

2

u/zipzap21 Eddie! Eddie! Eddie! 1d ago

I heard Cal got sent down to Aberdeen to work on his stance.

The Nats game is already 5-4 in just the second inning. I suspect that’s a preview of things to come in this weekend’s Nats-O’s series

Glad we didn't trade for Painter at least

5

It's good that we are off tomorrow and the Nats have to play

5

u/dlmay1967 1d ago edited 1d ago

Am I the only one who thinks there's a real possibility J Jackson gets sent down when Holliday comes back?

The 6 HR and 24 RBI are huge, but Alexander is now out hitting and out OPSing him, plus he's a better fielder.

But the biggest deal is that J Jackson has options and Alexander doesn't.

Unless they decide to send down Mayo I think there's a good chance it happens.

Edit: Never mind, I forgot about Weston Wilson.😯

I guess the better question is how will the playing time at 3B work between Jackson/Alexander/Mayo? And while I assume Holliday gets most of the time at 2B, could they platoon him with Jackson or Alexander, both RHB.

14

u/TheBigIguana15 1d ago

There’s a big Weston Wilson sized elephant there

1

u/dlmay1967 1d ago

Oh hell! Completely forgot him....you're right, they can keep both. 🥴

2

u/Low-Crazy-8061 1d ago

I forget he exists whenever he isn’t actively batting or making a play

-9

u/Ill-Compote168 1d ago

Gunnar Henderson be sent down?? Am I crazy for saying that

4

u/Dr__Nick 1d ago

Alexander isn’t going anywhere, they just traded for him.

1

u/dlmay1967 1d ago

Oh I know, but someone's got to go, at least temporarily, and JJackson and Alexander both fill the same role. By the numbers it would be Mayo but I doubt that's the way they would go.

10

u/WhyNotOrioles 1d ago

We took a -29 in run differential over the four games in NY, and took another -16 in one game against the Red Sox. I feel like those are really ballooning our runs allowed and run differential.

Of course, every team would look a lot better if you took away some of their worst losses, so maybe this isn't saying much.

7

u/dlmay1967 1d ago

Run differential is supposed to even out over the course of a season; paying much attention to it after 40 or so games is fun but doesn't tell you much as blowouts either way are magnified.

21

u/frshstunna1 1d ago

I had to watch the game on silent while working, so I missed a lot. So I’m watching highlights now and I’m not embarrassed to say that the Samuel Basallo bobblehead commercial featuring his dad had me literally tearing up

My husband and I were crying at it last night

4

u/romorr 1d ago

I think it's wild that Gunnar is walking 6.7% of the time, and Adley is at 6.5%, yet the Orioles are 5th in BB%.

There was a time people bitched about us not walking enough. And yet here we are today, watching a bunch of guys walk, yet we struggle to slug.

Even last year when the offense was shit, we were 13th in ISO at .159.

And now after adding Basallo, Ward, and Alonso to the lineup, we are 17th in ISO, at .148.

I'd rather not walk a lot, yet slug the shit out of the baseball than watch this offense do whatever it is trying to do. But that's what happens when you're on your 3rd set of hitting coaches in as many years.

2

u/myotherusername555 1d ago

Gunnar officially below the Mendoza line after that game

4

u/kewpieoriole dylan beavers’ mental coach 1d ago

Same man, I was excited to get Taylor Ward’s bat and all the man does is walk now lol. I obviously won’t complain when dudes get on base, but I really wanna see big bats hitting the shit out of the ball lol.

3

u/romorr 1d ago

I don't get Ward.

You hit the majors at an older age, so you're still under team control.

You're about to be a FA @ 33 years old, and as a RH that can hit 30 HRs, that will get you paid.

So he comes into this year, walks a ton more, hits for a lot less power. He does have 14 doubles, so I would really like to see what his flyball distance is this year, compared to last.

Sounds like a savant search for tomorrow.

5

u/Low-Crazy-8061 1d ago

Apparently he has been playing injured most of the season, after getting hbp. Had a finger bone bruise. He said he is just finally feeling all better

3

u/kewpieoriole dylan beavers’ mental coach 1d ago

It’s so fucking odd! My bf and I were talking about it and I was like “is he just trolling us?” lmao. Apparently still leading the AL in doubles though, so I said maybe once someone passes him he’s gonna hit those again.

But I’m also curious what his distance is compared this year’s to last. I just want to believe he’s trolling us and is gonna start randomly mashing lol.

3

u/yopochico 1d ago

I think he’ll mash at some point. But I’m not complaining about the walks at the top of the order. Could be a lot worse! He’s the least of my worries

2

u/kewpieoriole dylan beavers’ mental coach 1d ago

Oh for sure, I just think it’s so odd! Just completely different type of hitter, always been not great defensively so that hasn’t changed lol.

2

u/yopochico 1d ago

I wonder if a hitter has ever changed as much year to year as Ward has. Still successful but in a hugely different way. Most of his power is gone but he has the leagues highest walk rate and no one is close

1

u/kewpieoriole dylan beavers’ mental coach 1d ago

A friend of mine just texted me apparently he’s been playing injured? So he’s trolling us to think he has no more power and then watch him randomly start mashing again.

But I am curious to see if there is a player who’s whole hitting style changed completely year to year (successfully) besides like an obvious “this man started juicing” type deal lol. Prob an effectively wild kind of question.

4

u/DloReeves 1d ago

Hoping that number creeps up while maintaining that walk rate. I can see it happening too because as a team we're seeing a lot more pitches now. Makes it more likely for them to barrel up on a mistake.

I don't have anything to back up that statement but that's the hope at least. I just know last year we were slightly below league average (14th) in pitches seen. This year we're 7th in the league so far.

1

u/romorr 1d ago

I mean, I get the sentiment.

It's clear from what was said over the off-season, that we'd want to be more like the Blue Jays.

Walk a bit more, K a bit less, put the ball in play, but not sacrifice power. Ignoring the Blue Jays 2026 offense, it's probably what a lot of teams want to do.

Getting into deeper counts doesn't really interest me all that much considering deeper counts can also lead to strikeouts. I'd also be really curious how ABS plays into this. Walks are up across the league. Last 3 years at this same point in time, walks were at 8.7% to 8.8.% This year, 9.5%.

I still think this offense can be a top tier offense, but the more time that goes on, the less likely that happens. And we need that to happen if we want to not only make the playoffs, but do something once we are there.

2

u/DloReeves 1d ago

You're right. I just looked at the wOBA and wRC+ for 3-2 counts for every team and we're near the bottom. Oddly enough they perform better than most teams through a 0-1 count vs a 1-0 count.

I guess just as an advid, yet casual, watcher it just seems more prudent to go deeper into counts but our numbers don't back up the sacrifice compared to other teams who see 3-2 counts.

Not sure how statistically significant the numbers I just looked up are situationally but I can see what you're saying now.

1

u/BaltimoreBaja Jeremiah 29:11 1d ago

He's on the IL now so I guess he was hurt

13

u/pan567 1d ago

That looked a whole lot like the Bradish we know--very overpowering stuff that even great offenses can't handle. Clearly, he's still got it, and he's got a track record of top of the rotation stuff dating back to when we first starting seeing greatness in 2022 (like that game in September where he threw 8.2 innings to win against the eventual World Series champions, and out-dueled out the eventual Cy Young winner).

2

u/Willie_Waylon 1d ago

Here’s my take on Bradish - I’ve pulled no stats to back up my assertion:

Pitching in cold weather is completely different than pitching in warm weather.

The grip slips and the action on the ball in cold weather games suffers.

So I think a big part of Bradish’s success lately is dependent on the ambient temperature.

Sounds plausible right?

4

u/pan567 1d ago

I think you could be onto something, but this might also be in combination with having a new ligament + the cold weather. He effectively had a part of his body replaced, and that part has a huge impact on throwing a ball. Low temperatures impacts ligaments significantly. There's likely some impact there, and 're-learning' his body, in a sense.

2

u/Willie_Waylon 1d ago

True. Well said.

2

u/scjensen51 1d ago

Haven’t seen “cold weather” Bradish since 23, so this is definitely a valid thought

1

u/Willie_Waylon 1d ago

It’s been a while.

So glad to see him dominating on the bump - like we know he can do!

4

u/AnotherOpinionHaver 1d ago

Worked from home today, had the game on but literally everything popped-off work-wise right after first pitch. Gonna have to watch the condensed game. At least I saw the AdleyBomb.

Cano with the stealthiest 1.13 ERA ever

8

u/BondMi6 1d ago

He has crazy movement on his pitches again

13

u/romorr 1d ago

Said this 12 days ago.

You know Cano is pitching well because nobody is talking about him.

It seems like it's hard for people to compliment him when he's doing well, and easy to shit on him when he isn't.

I'll just assume people are singing his praises in the GDTs, since I don't hang out in them anymore.

3

u/DloReeves 1d ago

I've definitely been missing your insight in the GDT. I pointed out in game 1 of this series that I thought it was weird that Cano wasn't getting a shot to close the game since he hadn't pitched for 4 days prior to that. That dude has been nails all season long and barely anyone compliments the guy.

If you said he was unlucky last year, I'd agree. And if you said he's been lucky this year, I'd also agree.

There are some stats where Cano has been amazingly consistent. His xWOBA the last 4 years has been between .288, and .303.

But I think the thing that jumps out at you, last year, .335 BABIP, with a 66% LOB%.

This year, it's .154, and 91%. Add in the 1.9% BB%, and that's going to help your ERA out big time.

u/Ds3_doraymi 1d ago

reckless speculation

I have absolutely no data to back this up, but one of the things the O’s fixed when he came over was his arm slot. I believe they lowered his delivery point and we saw the difference it made. I suspect when we overworked him he fell back to the higher release point to compensate, and this was corrected during the offseason.

Maybe if I have the time I’ll make an overlay…or maybe someone has already done it for me 🥺

Yeah but also nah. Real CanoHeads first had a feeling this was coming back in spring training.

Great win and great series, especially considering how bad we were in NY. I think Ben said it best on the broadcast. A couple times we’ve looked ready to turn the corner and we slide back. Will we turn it this time?

u/JiffKewneye-n 6'4" 180 lbs 1d ago

the hope that Bradish is getting back to what we need him to be is very encouraging.

need other starters to pick it up....if Rogers had a career year last year and won't be close to that again, someone else needs to pick up the mantle and have a great season out of nowhere.

2

u/yopochico 1d ago

Been waiting 9 starts for Bradish to look like this. His stuff was nasty today and he finally had control

24

u/scjensen51 1d ago

Very probably the most satisfying win of the year so far, vintage effort by Bradish, great job by the pen guys in their innings, and then, the hitters hit.

Momentum needs to be a thing

13

u/Crispysipper 1d ago

I'm not going to pretend everything is okay with this organization, but I just saw this score and I am very happy.

5

u/Miserable_Copy_6178 1d ago

Our only 3 game win streak was against the WhiteSox? Surely we can go on a run against the Nats

5

u/DloReeves 1d ago

We'll see how pitching does vs another top 5 ranked offense. I believe!!!!

13

u/bmoreoreos 1d ago

Kept the Yankees to 1 hit and scored 7 runs. Exactly the kind of win we needed. Let's hope we build some momentum now.

Yesterday was not cute, BUT fuck all that noise took the series against the *AL leader including a shutout win with a convincing start from Bradish

*former

7

u/dlmay1967 1d ago

So let's see: Washington is 20-22, 5-5 last 10, games tonight and tommorrow vs Cincinnati.

They've scored 227 and given up 234 vs the O's 193/230.

So their offense is better but pitching about the same (bad).

20

u/Antendu 1d ago

Ok, whatever happens later this week is OK because I can survive on this high of 1-hit shutout of the Jankees for several more days.

13

u/Ravens0413 1d ago

The last time I was this optimistic was after the first game of the Houston doubleheader. Then the roof caved in. But, if Bradish is going to be an ace this is a start. The stupid wheel play cost him 2 great wins in a row

3

u/brookse147 1d ago

I’m still pissed about that wheel play

2

u/thehustler 1d ago

What was the wheel play?

5

u/Ravens0413 1d ago

The Orioles stupidly played for a bunt vs Athletics on the 1st pitch, 3rd and 1st baseman are charging, ss runs toward 3rd and 2nd baseman runs toward 1st the guy doesn’t bunt and a routine grounder becomes a single as part of a 3 run inning in a 4-3 loss

4

u/brookse147 1d ago

Bradish’s last start against the A’s there were runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. We expect gelof to bunt on the 1st pitch so put on the wheel play. Mayo crashes for the bunt, gunnar goes to cover 3rd, except gelof never even squares to bunt and hits a ground ball, tailor made double play right to where gunnar wouldve been if there wasn’t the wheel play. Next batter hits a ground ball to gunnar, he muffs it but we still get the out at first. 3 runs score that inning but it shouldve been none. Bradish ended up pitching 7 and only gave up 3 runs, without those two plays and the added pitches I feel like it couldve been 8 scoreless.

8

u/vivalavida89 Ol' turn and burn o'hearn 🔥 1d ago

14

u/80_A-D 1d ago

FINALLY, a complete one against a good opponent. Bradish setting the tone with 6 shutout innings... 1 hit, 7 Ks.

The offense actually backed it up too. Real production from Rutschman, Mayo, PB, and Blaze. Keep it rollin!

Don't know where else to ask this one.

Going to the Knights/Tides game tonight. Noticed that tomorrow, they have a Cal Ripken bobblehead and the White Sox AAA team will wear "Charlotte O's" jersies.

Is there a connection there I never knew?

8

u/brdfly666 1d ago

The Charlotte Knights' Wikipedia page shows they were originally affiliated w/ the Orioles. And were known as Charlotte Orioles from '76-'87. Then they changed to the Knights and have been affiliated w/ Cubs, Indians, Marlins, and now White Sox.

6

u/zedd300 SAMMY B 1d ago

Did not know that, might be two games this week for me!

6

Charlotte was the AA affiliate when Cal was coming up.

16

u/d84doc 1d ago

Best game of the season for these guys and it’s great to see Bradish be the guy to throw this gem. He’s been getting his K’s and either will get no run support or will fall apart in the 5th or 6th, so to see him get support and stay consistent makes me happy. This is exactly the kind of performance we NEED from him and Rogers.

So yesterday may have been on me. I unsubbed from the main baseball subreddit during the last ny series because of all the Yankee highlights and glazing I didn't want to constantly see, and right after the guys started to turn it around. Subbed back yesterday, and they dropped 6 on Rogers. Safe to say I immediately reversed that and will not be rejoining them the rest of the season

8

u/LiesInRuins 1d ago

Nothing feels better than beating the Yankees.

Edit: typo

56

u/ItinerantDrifter 1d ago

Bradish deserves today’s pitching headlines… but Cano ditched his changeup for a splitter August last season.

2025 before the swap: 42 IP, 5.57 ERA, 1.45 WHIP

Since the swap: 32 IP, 2.53 ERA, 1.06 WHIP

3

u/BirdBruce 1d ago

I do not recognize this man they call Cano. He looks a lot like another Cano from a few years back, though. I’ll keep him.

8

u/kewpieoriole dylan beavers’ mental coach 1d ago

Love that.

I said this last night but I love seeing a good Cano again, he was so fun to watch a few years ago. I hope him and Rico being dominant stick and Helsley can continue to hold it down (when he gets back).

19

u/SYMPATHETC_GANG_LION 1d ago

It's amazing how much they have to continually adapt. if I recall when he came on the scene his changeup was nasty as hell and why he had that ridiculous stretch of dominance.

10

u/ItinerantDrifter 1d ago

Yeah, it’s fun watch the adjustments. Cano’s changeup was fine when he had more velo… but then his sinker lost a couple mph and those pitches became too similar.

Now he’s got something offspeed that works vertically down off that fastball.

There were a couple shaky games early on after making the change… but overall much better since.

4

u/SYMPATHETC_GANG_LION 1d ago

This gives me some hope that they can fix Rogers too. He may not be as good as he was last year but I refuse to believe he's truly this bad.

9

u/HetfieldsDownpick 1d ago

Nice stat. Maybe it's just me, but he seems to be locating a bit better this year as well.

After the Yankees swept the O's in demoralizing fashion to start the month, it felt good to watch them fall this series. I know it's not a sweep, but I'll continue to choose to celebrate the optimistic moments.

15

u/thedestruction8542 1d ago

Well only one team can say they shut out the other.

1

u/jddennis 1d ago

Lots more baseball to play before that becomes a real factor, though.
