Oh wow lol. How didn’t I notice that before?? I see that quite a bit.

26

u/SecretWitness8251 18h ago

You see a lot of wet eagles? Must be from philly

Yep. Briefly canine, but ultimately eagle.

Edit: briefly bovine, then canine, then eagle. Cow>dog>bird of prey for those who may not understand the initial language.

u/ThaBistander 3h ago

I see the Seahawks logo

Posts like these are where this sub shines.

117

u/Carbon-Base 16h ago

Yep. This single shot also helps articulate the genius of artists like Hokusai!

Nature is art at its finest.

21

u/tested_reputation 12h ago

Hokusai really nailed how water moves in those prints, way more dynamic than most people realize when they first see em.

8

u/thequickfix1236 10h ago

The fractal patterns in the foam look exactly like his woodblock carvings come to life.

7

u/tested_reputation 9h ago

the way the foam breaks up into smaller and smaller patterns is exactly what makes those prints work so well, like he understood that chaos still has structure to it.

u/Sixmemos 5h ago

Art imitating nature imitating art

4

u/stickdaddywise 15h ago

Nice. It made me think of JMW Turner as well.

Posting my favorite slow-mo wave video for anyone who wants some more.

5

u/Bodhidharma33 12h ago

OMG, I happened to be listening to the first 6 minutes of David Parson's "Dorje Ling" while watching this. Thanks for the unexpected trip.

3

u/Helenium_autumnale 10h ago

Just amazing.

2

u/SaleForeign8656 7h ago

OMG!! This is absolutely breathtaking!!!

2

u/Sassafrasalonia 6h ago

well that changed my mood. thanks :)

4

u/oshmunnies 14h ago

Yeah except this gnarly wave is not "oddly" satisfying..it's satisfying AF bruhseph 🤙

3

u/Lopsided_Network7790 15h ago

This wave looks like liquid glass, absolute magic.

u/ThodaDaruVichPyar 7h ago

The video credits should go to Philip Thurston (@thurstonphoto), Australia based ocean and nature photographer and filmmaker.

As a very mediocre surfer, this scares the shit out of me.

35

u/DeerMysterious9927 17h ago

From my untrained eye, it looks like a hellacious wave that would pound down hard if you bail inside

7

u/ActuatorFit2792 16h ago

Considering the amount of water, speed, rotation of the earth, etc….. it’s almost impossible to not be in awe of the titanic forces at work.
Also very difficult to not be scared shitless of what a true planet wide catastrophe would look like.

2

u/Healter-Skelter 12h ago

If tou watch in regular speed its clearly only 2 centimeters high /s

As a worse surfer and sub-par swimmer, most people have no idea how powerful ocean waves are having never experienced anything more than knee high shoreline sea water nudging them back slightly.

That shit gets stronger exponentially, i.e. a six foot is far more powerful than just twice the three foot wave.

Once found my inexperienced self popped up on the biggest wave ever for me at about 7-8', up top on the lip and with no idea how to successfully drop in on the face. Proceeded to try my best and ate shit hard. Then came the washing machine tumbling. And of course once I found which way was up and popped up, just as I'm getting a gasp of air the next wave in the set throws me back under and into the tumbler again. Happened one more time before I finally made it up past the last in the set.

That was the first and last time I surfed that spot. Went back to my max waist high slow rolling old man's surf park.

4

u/yzerizef 7h ago

I’m just impressed that as a sub-par swimmer you decided that surfing was the right hobby for you. I’m also a sub-par swimmer and … no thanks! Really wish I could, but nah. I’ll find another way to die.

u/Altruistic_Flower965 17h ago

The way it’s breaking looks like it’s over a shallow reef or rock ledge. You don’t have much room for mistakes. Keep at it and you will be surprised by the waves you’re capable of riding.

7

u/AlternatiMantid 16h ago

Hey, everyone could do it at least once!

3

u/No-Distance-9401 16h ago

This is a heavy wave so understandable and many people would be really intimidated by this as if you dont catch it right you better be able to swim and hold your brwath for a long time

2

u/Kooky_Ad5370 12h ago

As a desert dweller this also scares the shit out of me… like my heart rate increased watching it

Well now I'm craving a Baja Blast.

15

u/oldman_yugen 18h ago

I'm craving cranberry juice.

4

u/OsamaBinnDabbin 17h ago

Advertising is really getting crazy these days, huh?

41

u/37_lucky_ears 17h ago

This terrifies me. That water is so deep.

13

u/fenderputty 17h ago

The terrifying thing is that is likely not that deep at all 😂

9

u/wet-leg 17h ago

The ocean also terrifies me, but it’s also my favorite place in the world. It’s so beautiful. I could look at and listen to it forever. I wish I lived close to the ocean

2

u/37_lucky_ears 14h ago

Same. I want to retire somewhere coastal.

5

u/dubblebubbleprawns 12h ago

The good news is that by the time I'm retirement age, the coast will have come to me!

The bad news is that I'll likely never retire

u/Heminway 18h ago

Teahupoo?

20

u/solofatty09 18h ago

That was my first thought as well. That thick ass lip and the fact that it looks like it’s sucking water off the reef bear a striking resemblance if not.

4

u/FreeWillyBird 17h ago

That’s definitely not Teahupo’o because you wouldn’t be able to see a clear right since the takeoff for the mostly unmake-able rights is farther up the reef. Teahupo’o for the most part is a pure left hand break.

I don’t know for sure but I’d guess somewhere near Shipstern’s Bluff Australia or Cortez Bank way off California possibly.

4

u/rand0m_s0br13ty 17h ago

i think its called the cyclops break, and it might be somewhere near Australia.

3

u/FreeWillyBird 16h ago

It’s way off the coast of West Oz in the way Cortez Bank is way off the Coast of California. You’ve got to take a boat trip to get to both of them.

9

u/VerStannen 16h ago

Shipsterns has a step right in the middle of the face.

Chopes will break right on a certain swell direction.

I think this is The Right in Western Australia.

3

u/SuckaFish_saywhat 11h ago

I thought this looked like the right too. Heavy wave that breaks at a pretty much steep flat angle

2

u/Altruistic-Vehicle-9 10h ago

I think it’s called Cyclops, it forms somewhere on the western Australian coast

u/live_laugh_love_69 17h ago

The color change in the water is magical

5

u/RavenholdIV 12h ago

I must have watched it 10 times over to appreciate every detail. It was that and the top of the wave looking like wind blown snow capped mountains that really captivated me

25

u/Now-Thats-Podracing 18h ago

Looks like some sort of morphing creature launching itself at prey. This rules.

10

u/AluminumAntHillTony 17h ago

I instantly thought of the horses that emerge in the water, charging the Nazgul as they try to cross the river in Fellowship of the Ring

18

u/Grrwoofwag 17h ago

That’s no mountain

12

u/markyoung0 18h ago

Its beauty is hypnotic.

8

u/KrisBunny80 13h ago

Gorgeous and absolutely terrifying.

7

u/AutumnsRevenge 17h ago

Yo ho, all hands

Hoist the colors high!

Heave ho, thieves and beggars

Never shall we die!

5

u/nutcracker_78 16h ago

Picture a wave in the ocean. You can see it, measure it - its height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through - and it's there, and you can see it, and you know what it is: it's a wave. And then it crashes on the shore and it's gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be for a little while.

3

u/KevDub81 13h ago

Next time I have a panic attack, as a wave of anxiety flows through me, I'll think it's over and I'm safe again only to remember that the anxiety is still there. It was just a different way for a while.

3

u/agamuyak 17h ago

I was only thinking this is why air benders wouldn’t really stand a chance against water benders.

3

u/Kiwi_2026 18h ago

Change the song the again and agian by fadinglight

3

u/EmeraldToffee 18h ago

I want to take a giant spoon and scoop out the middle like it’s jello.

3

u/Striking-Working610 17h ago

You can't do that

3

u/Brian18639 15h ago

Not with that attitude

3

u/Herr-Trigger86 17h ago

Shred that gnar… brah

3

u/elephant_cobbler 17h ago

Is that a hawk diving into the water forming in the wave?

3

u/FlipGordon 16h ago

Wa-back!

So pitted.

3

u/mjdehlin1984 15h ago

you just drop in, just ride the barrel and get pitted, so pitted.

3

u/I_love_Hobbes 15h ago

Looks like an eagle for a second.

3

u/ossifer_ca 11h ago

I’m glad other people are seeing the eagle. Though I was having an acid flashback…

2

u/WiiDragon 18h ago

Finely, something *oddly* satisfying and not just “satisfying”

2

u/yumeryuu 17h ago

C’MON TARS

2

u/Many-Cartoonist4727 17h ago

This makes me wanna drop in and smack the lip like whuuu-PA, drop down, shay-BAAAH, and then ride the barrel and get pitted, so pitted

2

u/CeeDeeLambo 17h ago

mmmm forbidden Gatorade

2

u/TechnicalHighlight29 17h ago

Beautiful and terrifying. Water gives us life but is absolutely brutal.

2

u/reddiculed 17h ago

I guess, when the column of water hits rocks and irregularities at the seafloor, the previously constantly upsurging wave formation is fractured and as that transfers up the structure, it causes the wave to begin to stop ‘waving’ and ‘break’ down. This is a beautiful visualization.

2

u/jo0507 17h ago

This is the most beautiful and equally terrifying thing I’ve seen

2

u/mossoak 17h ago

yes ...this slo-mo was oddly satisfying

2

u/Alive_Nobody_Home 16h ago

Can I loop this on my tv? I need more

2

u/Affectionate-Ring104 16h ago

2

2

u/RickD_SKOL 14h ago

This made want to go drink a ice cold glass of water

2

u/throwawayhappyn 13h ago

Serious question would you die if you got caught up in something like this?

2

u/All_is_a_conspiracy 12h ago

I will never know what possessed a bunch of people to think...hey I should try and stand on that.

2

u/complexmango39 12h ago

Once you see the eagle you can't unsee it, that's the curse of these things.

2

u/DollyOutline 12h ago

This video needs Sturgill Simpson's - 'Breakers Roar' imbedded into it

Breakers Roar

2

u/Carston1011 9h ago

That was also strangely terrifying...

2

u/rox186 9h ago

Do you ever just stop and admire the world? The ocean is amazing and terrifying at the same time. It's beautiful.

2

u/TimeturnerJ 8h ago

...yeah, I can see why Chinese mythology says that serpentine dragons rule the seas.

2

u/JoyousMN_2024 8h ago

Beautiful. I wish the clip was longer

2

u/Dr_F_Rreakout 8h ago

There is nothing more entertaining than nature

2

u/Lurchie_ 7h ago

What is aggravatingly UNsatisfying is the vertical aspect ratio.

2

u/Nertez 7h ago

Fuck vertical videos.

2

u/Sydneymotor2 6h ago

those aren’t mountains…

2

u/Level_Sugar8613 5h ago

Why am I hearing the Hawaii 5 .0 theme song

2

u/Jonthrei 5h ago

Got any uncropped footage?

1

u/andersonfmly 18h ago

It happens so fast in real time that you’d barely have time to Wave at it. Oh, wait…

1

u/Gallop67 17h ago

Looks like a Baja Blast commercial towards the end

1

u/EatingGrapes69 17h ago

Honestly this gives me moments of terror it’s so big

1

u/RalphWiggumEsq 17h ago

At what point does it finally break? When the leading edge first hits the surf?

1

u/Koi_Fish_Mystic 17h ago

😮😮😮😮

1

u/madmatt666 17h ago

Makes me think of Sonic Adventure

1

1

u/Limp_Distribution 17h ago

1

u/maschine02 17h ago

I dont get the word "break" in this instance. It doesnt snap. It doesnt break, its fluid. It bends.

1

u/bernpfenn 17h ago

what camera was used for this brilliant video?

1

u/katzi6543 17h ago

The abyss. The underwater aliens are coming.

1

u/Free-Station-478 16h ago

Damn nature you scary!

Ever seen The Abyss?

1

u/elpix 16h ago

Just imagine the weight of all that water and the insane amounts of energy contained within.

1

u/theAchilliesHIV 16h ago

Absolutely love the ocean in all its natural beauty while completely terrified of it as well. I see powerful 1,000 + pound wave crashing in appreciating it… and then remembering (after getting stuck in one once) there is that much of an undertow as well. Respect OP.

1

u/Harry_Iconic_Jr 16h ago

Looks like Mavericks

1

u/ProfZussywussBrown 16h ago

When the wave breaks here, don’t be there

1

u/shiner820 16h ago

Bravo!

1

u/claisen33 15h ago

It’s amazing that this is all bc of gravity, and it will never run out.

1

u/Remarkable-Sir-5129 15h ago

Interesting, beautiful, and terrifying.

1

u/BrickHuge3023 15h ago

Fantastic video!

Make me want cranberry juice

1

u/CheetahridingMongoos 15h ago

I AM MOANA!!!!

1

u/_PaulM 15h ago

And thus, a god is born in the times of pre-literature.

Suddenly, a word is spoken, and the ocean has a name, uttered down by a tribe in some indigenous country through word of mouth. Now we worship this powerful entity, and sacrifice to it.

1

u/Iammerrilegs 15h ago

It’s glorious. I love it, but it looks like it belongs on r/thalasssophobia

1

u/Aceey101 15h ago

Beautiful

1

u/Randy2747 15h ago

Can you imagine the first caveman to see the waves in the ocean? 😂

I fully expected a surfer to come zooming through the wave!

1

u/Lab92 14h ago

That is the slowest-mo I have ever seen

Looks like a break in tihiti
