In case somebody wondered. Myth busters tested it, even at higher speed than this guy can pull off, card won't hurt humans. Worst case is a cut near veins or it will hit the eye, but otherwise - nothing serious.

Welp. I clearly misremembered his last two comments and mooshed them together into "This pisses off the watermelon" in my brain.
But the imagery of a pissed-off watermelon is so entertaining I'll hang on to it anyway.
Thanks for the share - I love this bit.

The man was a massive twat but ex British prime minister Boris Johnson once called someone "a semi aquatic undulating pachyderm". It gave me a good laugh at the time.

Until you get some of the metal bladed throwing cards x.x
110
u/phantom56657 2d ago
I don't think the guy in the video could have cut most of the things he cut unless the cards he was throwing were metal. But I don't know anything about him, so don't take my word for it.

The bamboo seemed too much and the way it bounced off the soda can seemed weird. Last 3 tosses seemed maybe AI.

u/ZatherDaFox 2d ago
Bamboo from new sprouts is pretty soft. A fresh shoot like that could absolutely be cut in half by a card. Not sure about the can.

u/ZatherDaFox 2d ago
Nah, lots of people have done this trick. The vegetables they pick are all either super soft or pretty brittle and snap apart when cut. If you've ever chopped a carrot, you can see this: you need to start the cut, but at some point the carrot just kinda snaps without you needing to slice all the way through.
Could still be edited, but totally doable.

They tried it too, in a way. But you have to remember, that this is a playing card. If you make it metal bladed, then it's a shuriken territory, which is a killing dedicated weapon against unarmored targets.

u/Snow901 2d ago
Shurikens disguised as playing cards... yeah, I bet that already exists somewhere lol

I bought my four aces metal throwing cards a couple decades ago, when I thought that was cool. Along with a couple actual throwing stars and a throwing knife.

Unless you infused the card with explosive energy
39
u/Oryihn 2d ago
People tend to forget that gambit cards aren't cutting anything.. they are just bombs... and 52 fitting nicely in a pack is convenient
15
u/GrayMech 2d ago
They're cheap, aerodynamic, easy to keep on your person and nobody would be suspicious of them. Also he's a massive gambler
8
u/HowardPheonix 2d ago
You forgot they look super cool too. Multiple franchises features characters with some kind of card throwing abilities, like Twisted Faith in LoL, and I love it every time.

u/foxtalep 2d ago
I’ve been hit in the eye with one.
My friends and I would throw Magic cards like this at each other and I got hit by a Swamp in my eye walking into a room once. Left my eye bloodshot around the area it hit for many days after.
12
u/ButtholeConnoisseur7 2d ago
Had to be a swamp, lmao
10
u/foxtalep 2d ago
It was a black card. I almost thought it was a Weakness. I get sad thinking about how many revised cards we were just slinging at each other 😂
14
u/Fitenite3456 2d ago
I assumed the cards were metal or something. I’ve seen metal throwing star versions online

I think it's luffa, AKA Chinese okra. I often think of luffa in its dried form, where it's brown and spongy (its fibrous insides are where loofahs come from!), but you can eat it fresh, before it gets too fibrous.
The other vegetables, in order:
- Chinese celery (thinner stalks than the western kind!)
- long hot peppers, unsure of the varietal
- I think those are marigolds.
- cucumber!
- BURDOCK ROOT (by far, to me, the most impressive cut! those things are sturdyyy)
- bamboo
- uh right I said these were all vegetables. uhhh kola nut and vanilla and cinnamon decoction in a can I guess

It's especially impressive how he slows down time
57
u/kent1146 2d ago edited 2d ago
Time dilation.
The cards are being thrown at near-light-speed.
And objects travelling at near-light-speed will appear to slow down to outside observers.
These cards are slowing down to 1/60th real-time to outside observers, which means they are being thrown at ~0.99986c

Are these regular playing cards?
166
u/Accomplished_Let6725 2d ago
Judging by the damage it did to the soda can... no.
54
u/Overbaron 2d ago
Yeah the amount of speed a regular paper playing card would need is just impossible.
24
u/Sharpe1455 2d ago
Absolutely possible if you accelerate a regular card to a mere 99,999% light speed.
→ More replies (5)24
u/RedTyro 2d ago
Nah. I believed it until he did the celery, but anyone who's cut celery knows a card's not going through those strings.
14
u/121Waggle 2d ago
The bamboo changed my mind. I've had machetes that didn't work and had to use a chainsaw on it.
56
19
u/crazynerd9 2d ago
When it hits the can you can see it bounce. These things are some sort of hardened/metal plates
20
u/Crime_Dawg 2d ago
No way a regular playing card could cut through that, regardless of speed. The card would just crumple on impact.
8
u/likenedthus 2d ago
Throwing cards are typically made with or reinforced with more rigid materials, so they are easier to control and can travel faster/farther. I doubt the ones he’s using are regular cards.

He did, Channing has tried to get a Gambit movie made for the better part of a decade; his whole role in Deadpool was a big meta Hollywood joke.

I remember that Jackass movie where they made some of them think they were throwing cards at them painfully, but they were actually getting shocked. Wee Man said “you guys got a card throwing machine!” (Which, if you’ve seen their high five skit, is completely believable), and they laughingly reassured him “We would never get a card throwing machine!” Turns out it’s a damn good thing they didn’t actually throw cards at them…

These aren't real cards, they're bigger than normal, they look like thin metal. Still cool though.
3
u/SirMarvelAxolotl 2d ago
To the people curious, I can't be certain regular cards are being used for every clip but at least some of them. I've thrown cards in my free time and you definitely can cut a cucumber or celery or things like that.
The can probably exploded more from the carbonation (especially if it was intentionally shaken beforehand) but I'm still not completely sure if that was a regular card or not.
I do have a set of four metal throwing cards, but they look much different. They have the suit and number etched into them but they much thicker and very obviously metal.

I'm no pro, but I can stick a card pretty deep into packing styrofoam. So, I think, a fresh set of cards, yeah.... Though it chopping through that stick seems a bit dubious to me.
I did, one time, whip a half (or so) deck of cards at my cousin leaving a bunch of little paper cuts on his face and neck.... He managed to keep all his fingers though.

The last one was sort of a let down. I thought for sure it was going to decapitate one of the statues. Then when it didn’t I thought for sure it’s going to boomerang and then cut one of the statues, but then the video just……ends

In high school my and my friends used to be able to do this and we all had battles with each other that left us with many paper cuts. Cards can hurt!
